SI Ranks the Top 10 FBS Conferences Heading into 2017....

Quote:—we took into account the league’s current depth, recent postseason success and foundation for future growth. Which league deserves top billing a little over a month away from the first kickoff of the 2017 season? Here's how all 10 stack up.

Spoiler Alert: The MAC isn't #1 (or #10 02-13-banana) But this quote from the MAC summary is special:

Quote:Still, the league’s TV contract will work in its favor over the next decade it spans.

I thought Sean Frazier destroyed the MAC?

Absolutely no doubt that gutless MAC ADs have had a big contribution in not standing up for the fanbases

04-cheers Yes! Better than fun belt Sunbelt and Conference USA. Looks like the AAC wouldn't be a lateral move, heh? It would be depressing to be worst than the Sunbelt. Thanks WMU for holding the MAC on your shoulders last year. Lol

Boise State hasn't won the MWC the last two seasons and got beat in the Cactus Bowl by a mediocre Baylor team that had lost its last six games in a row after barely beating a bad Iowa State.

MAC participated in the big time bowl, AAC stayed home, pretty much what it boils down to

It's MD's "vortex of ridiculousness". I got sucked into it earlier and all it did was waste the board and myself's time.

I think maybe this old argument is because it is not being broken done enough. In terms of structure and leadership, the AAC is a better conference, that conference does not suffer from incompetence as much as the MAC. When it comes to the product, that is where its a wash, or as of recently, MAC creeping slightly ahead. We should be thankful as a whole the MAC has had such great talent and coaching over the years, it has saved this conference. Just not sure how much longer that can happen, feels like this thing could collapse at any time given dwindling MAC fanbases.

Although I would enjoy watching NIU play against anyone, I find this comment to be more ridiculous than most of the MD comments. The quality of teams are not better in the MAC and the quality of coaches are not better. For example, you do see MAC coaches getting hired away but usually by lesser tier Big10'schools. AAC coaches are hired away by Texas, Oregon and that's just last year. As far as talent, all you have to do is look at NFL rosters and count where more players originated. MAC has produced some hidden gems but not as many as the AAC. I haven't even used the argument of how much I would prefer to watch Cincinnati, Connecticut, Navy or any of the Texas schools over any directional Michigan or Ohio schools. No way we can move in the position we are in but it would be much better football.

It's interesting to note the value of the huge TV deals for the big conferences, then the next tier which includes NIU, then the enormous drop to the bottom two conferences.

It's frustrating to me when NIU fans continue to lament the ESPN deal for the MAC. It's a lifeline for the MAC - without it we are the Sun belt and there is no NIU or WMU playing in a major bowl game

More than frustrating, it's just annoying. Pros and cons aside, the deal is here and not going away. To cry about it every opportunity is getting so tiresome. These are the same people who cry about winters in the Midwest and taxes.

In the past year and a half Houston has beat #9 Florida St (in a "big time bowl") #3 Oklahoma (Big 12/Sugar Bowl champion) and #3 Louisville (featuring the Heisman Trophy winner), has the MAC had three wins that impressive in their entire 70+ year history?

Thank you Vegas Huskie. Yes the weeknight games are a hassle for alumni and season ticket holders. But because of these weeknight games, we get more national tv games and national exposure than some power 5 schools. It helps recruiting, the school, and the conference. As an alumni as season ticket holder myself I will gladly work around the inconvenience of weeknight games for all the positives it does for NIU.

Well unfortunately you guys may eventually be the only ones in the stadium to enjoy these weeknight games. There may be a dozen or two handful of diehards that will be at every game, but if you are going to sustain a program for the long haul, you are not going to be able to do it with the current ESPN structure. Noone can argue that the fanbases are eroding rapidly. Now if you want to argue SHOULD fans go to every measure to be sure to attend games and buy season tickets that is one thing, I agree fans should make more of an effort. But if we are talking about the real world and looking at current real trends, the fact the ESPN deal is driving this conference to eventual extinction cannot be understated.

Is there any evidence that it has helped recruiting? It isn't like the MAC has really been better lately (certainly not top to bottom). So either the coaching has gotten worse, or the recruiting hasn't gotten better.

Is there any evidence that it has helped recruiting? It isn't like the MAC has really been better lately (certainly not top to bottom). So either the coaching has gotten worse, or the recruiting hasn't gotten better.

+1. I'm sure any potential recruits who may watch a game on the ESPN stable of stations enjoy watching the players playing in front of empty MAC stadiums while the announcers continually promote the big P5 games on Saturday.

What is the basis for your first statement? Sorry, but non-NIU fans following college football would not say the Huskies have more national TV games and national exposure than a P5 school. As Huskie fans we tune in, but if you live in ACC, SEC, B1G, BigXII, or PAC-12 country, your league's cellar-dweller is shown more often than NIU. Keep in mind that a number of our games are only streamed via ESPN3 or ESPNU. Even the CBSTV games are generally not part of a cable package ala ESPN or ESPN2.
At an early point in time, that exposure was extremely helpful, but now this contract is doing more harm than good. Please explain the value for recruiting, the school or the MAC when it comes to games played in front of half-empty or worse stadiums?
IF you carefully read the posts, many on here are convinced the weeknight games (especially against lower-tier MAC foes) have significantly contributed to the decline in attendance. And then comes the domino effect with less tailgating, fewer people patronizing local businesses that NIU also counts on for support, etc. Come November, when college football interest is at its highest, the MAC is non-existent on Saturdays.
Sorry, but this contract has reached the point of diminishing returns. Almost all the P5s have developed their own conference networks and are exploring new and alternative ways (Amazon, Hulu, etc.) to deliver their content instead of relying on an ESPN deal. Now add on the fact that our deal is dictated to us, and it's clearly lesser to what the P5s are moving away from.

Very good and true points. The deal and MAction were great at first when the weeknight games were a novelty. Now they are more of a nuisance. One positive observation I have is that the midweek games did help our "national brand". I've spoken with many people across the country that have watched one of our games. Mostly because nothing else was on but it was coverage. I don't know how that has translated for recruiting aside from we've gotten more players from Florida in the last 10 years then we had before. It would be great for everyone except ESPNU and 3 if this midweek stuff ended soon though.
