Is public speaking important for that job? I'll admit I can't name a single conference commissioner with the exception of whoever "king karl" is thanks to AR St complaining about him. He might be a train wreck; but I know nothing about the business of ensuring Sallie Mae gets paid. I do know the guy was smart enough to bring on Appalachian State University, so he must be BRILLIANT.

A conference commissioner is essentially the head of the marketing department for the conference. It's his job to sell the product and promote the league to Whatever outlets are available and bring in the most money possible for the conference. Someone with confidence and a powerful speaker will have more success in that position then one without a strong presence.

Not one? Not even Jim Delany, whos been B1G commish for 28 years and is arguably the most influential voice in college sports? Or John Swofford, who's been ACC commish for 20? He's right here in NC.

I find it hard to believe, especially in a decade filled with power conference realignment, that you've never heard of another commissioner besides Benson.

I'm not familiar with either name. But, I didn't know there was a Sun Belt Conference until my injury in Afghanistan led me to investigate going back to school in Boone circa 2012. I won't refute my ignorance to the world of commissioners or FBS football. I am sure they're very important people in their own world. I also won't remember this until I read it again tomorrow. Go Apps. 04-cheers

Thank you. I really wasn't sure what commissioner's roles were in collegiate sports. I just think of batman for some reason when I hear that word.

Seems to me he took over a bad situation and made it better. Even with the raids by a previously better CUSA he made the right moves to put together a conference whose schools will be better off financially and athletically from top to bottom than CUSA. I'd say he's done a fine job.

Why is he disliked by so many? What bad things has he done?

Arkansas State fans do not like him because one year he shipped the football championship trophy to the them and it was left outside the athletic office door.

That was the year right after our title year when he cancelled all of his weekend plans and flew to Statesboro for the ULM @ GS game just because there was a chance we could win a conference title.

I know many blame Benson for the breakup of the WAC but I'm not so sure that he was the biggest factor in that. I'm OK with Benson because when I look at some of our peer conference figureheads like Judy MacLeod I find Benson has done a better job. He may not be perfect but he's not terrible.

He's hopefully going to change that perception this year.

I still think it would be wise to be cautiously optimistic after how bad we got burned last year.

I sincerely hope he's successful and makes a dramatic turnaround. But I can't jump all in on that one and won't fault anyone else who feels the same.

Haha. I 100% understand your apprehension and that's definitely the safer bet. I just think most of our fanbase is going to be pleasantly surprised by mid-season. We are going to make the mistakes that young teams make but other than that we'll see some major improvement.

Edit: Occasionally I'll get these strong feelings that almost always come to fruition. I had a great feeling the week leading up to the UF game, between my close group of friends I picked us to win the conference in 2014, I had a bad feeling right before the WVU game (even though I talked it up all offseason). I hope I'm on the right side with this intuition too.

RE: Media Days 2017 Thread
Coach Summers and Fields and Delarosa did a great job representing Eagle Nation. They said some very positive things that have me looking on the bright side. Summers was excited and promising when he was talking about the offense and his new staff and Fields said that everyone admires Coach Cook and has been behind him since day one. Delarosa said the offense was looking great last spring and he's excited for this year. I have confidence in Tyson Summers and his new staff to mold this young team into winners. My two biggest ?'s at this point are at QB and the Secondary.

Well, I owe you an apology. What you have been doing in service of your fellow soldiers in Afghanistan and for our nation, it goes without saying, is far more impressive than knowing who Jim Delany is. Thank you for your service, and I apologize for my remarks. Go Apps!

Benson had ZERO to do with the break up of the WAC. Schools had opportunities they felt were better and there was a lack of regional schools wanting to move up.

Neither is on Benson.

That he did. I'm more of a fan of athletes who wear school colors but I know Fields goal this season is to stand out and take charge. He led the team across Eagle Creek this morning and that's a big deal.

Another small item out of Media Days. Terry Mohajir was named head of league AD's for this 2 year cycle. No more stepping out of line fellas.
