Coastal Carolina: #7 Public University in SC
App State: #3 Public University in NC
Georgia Southern: #3 Public University in GA
Georgia State: #5 Public University in GA
Troy: #6 Public University in AL
South Alabama: #7 Public University in AL
UL-Lafayette: #2 Public University in LA
UL-Monroe: #8 Public University in LA
Arkansas State: #3 Public University in AR
Texas State: #7 Public University in TX
I used your link and it shows Coastal as the number 4 public University in SC, behind Clemson, SCar, and College of Charleston.
I don't see where you see us at 7th.
I'm actually surprised we are 4 and not number 3 out of the public schools.

1. Clemson
2. USC
3. C of Charleston
4. Citadel
5. Winthrop
6. Lander U
7. Coastal
I would consider Coastal 3 or 4 in the state too. I haven't ever heard of Winthrop or Lander.

Winthrop is about 20 minutes south of Charlotte in Rock Hill.

Interesting. UALR grandfathered in for football might put pressure on UTA. But I doubt it would phase UTA much...they pretty much don't have the need to have football.
However, that would probably save NMSU football being a football only member. That would put Troy and USA in the same division.

Historically CofC and The Citade and Winthrop are better regarded. I believe we are making strides to change that though, including raising admission standards. It doesn't help that we get the lowest percentage of state support than any of those schools.

Considering the number of public universities in Texas, being #7 is very good.

College of Charleston has long had a strong reputation. I haven't kept up with SC schools much since moving out of the state well over a decade ago, but Coastal had a loooooooong way to climb to have a better rep than either them or The Citadel. I don't mean that as a slight. It's just that, in the 90's at least, it was up there with Francis Maroon as the easiest school to get into in the state.
**I didn't think about the USC_' s (Aiken, Upstate, whichever else there is). Those were kind of commuter schools, as I recall.

You aren't wrong. Coastal has made many strides but changing reputation (some earned and some unearned) and perception in state will take some time.

Grandfathered was a poor choice of words. That implies things changed and special rules exist as exemption to the current rules.
Conference bylaws provide that if a school offers a sport the school has to play in the league and have to be added to the conference schedule in a reasonable amount of time.

What's the chances that UALR even gets a football team?

I think UTA would field a team sooner . . . and that ain't happening anytime in the near future . .

Georgia Southern is just now shaking off its party school, UGA reject status that it's held for a few decades. It really helps when your State board starts taking you more seriously as an institution and gives you proper funding. We don't get anywhere near what UGA, GT, or GAST do but we get a great deal more than what the other comprehensive universities in the state get so we've already made that separation. Once Coastal's attendance increases and the brand becomes more recognized through sports, y'all will start getting a lot more respect in the state.

Study will almost certainly say they need capital/start-up costs of $15million to $20million and annual operating budget increase of $6 million to $7 million in annual operating revenue.
Those aren't impossible numbers IF there are some big hitters in Little Rock willing to part with it.
They are absolutely going to have to have the funds locked in before the UA board blesses it.

I think athletic success will help and being in the Sun Belt should help a lot as well. We tried switching conferences to the SoCon and the in-state schools didn't support it. We tried going to the CAA as well and couldn't - CofC was selected instead. It appears based on my observations that the most vocal opposition to our stadium expansion was coming from the Charleston area.
So hopefully now that we are in a better conference, have FBS football, and other athletic success that it will help us - but it will take some time.
