RE: Are we getting a new scoreboard?
Wonder when they are going to power up that video board. I imagine there is a lot of wiring/calibration work to be done.
As far as phase II, who gives a sh*t about the ribbon boards? All they show on them are ads. Is that common at other stadiums that have them?

per some replies on Tommy G's twitter , they are doing some testing today and are hoping to have it at least basically functional for tomorrow's FCC game. with some "we shall see" and "fingers crossed" thrown in.

Totally agree about the ribbon boards. Those should have stats and other scores on them.

Look... I said this over on a different discussion about another AAC school that was unveiling "the largest" (or some such) jumbo-tron...
These video boards are not really about "the game." They are about ADVERTISING. Seriously. They are about an income stream, ingeniously worked into the "game experience," when in fact the "game experience" (i.e. replays, stats, scores, etc...) are the secondary use of the technology. The board...and the "ribbon boards"...are there for advertising revenue.
I'm not saying that as a buzz-kill, but to be realistic about it. With this new video board, UC has a potent new income-stream. I hope it works out well and they exploit it to the fullest.

Jerry, I understand that, but they can do both. All it is now is an eye sore. If all they wanted was ads they could have commanded more and put up permanent placards on the pavilion. It's just a bright moving distraction as is. Paul Brown stadium uses them in the proper manner.

I agree with Billy - it's both. Of course it's all about revenue, but the biggest flashiest advertising in the world isn't worth anything if it never gets viewed. You've got to have butts in the stadium seats rather than home recliners to interest in-stadium advertisers.

Sh*t, that was fast. Don't even know if I could install a home theater projector that fast.

I bet Doss got the old Nippert jumbotron installed in his vacation home's theater in one afternoon with people he found outside the Home Depot.

So perhaps I missed it along the way but how does this new unit rank in size against others in the AAC and Tri-state P5 rivals?
Surely these are some useless statistics we all need to know for bragging rights this season.

It's the average size of most P5 schools. I think we're on the large side for those in the AAC not in an NFL stadium.

According to this list from 2016, we have the 25th largest video board in the NCAA, outside of those in NFL stadiums (Miami, UMass, Temple). We have the largest one in our conference outside of Temple and Memphis. Some other schools have gotten new video boards since then, but I doubt we will have slipped much past 25 in the past year. So yeah, it does appear that we have an average or above average P5 video board.
EDIT: Raymond James has definitely upgraded since then, so add USF to the list of NFL-owned stadiums with larger boards.

Memphis? The Titans play in Nashville.

Whoops, you are correct. I lumped Memphis in there since the stadium was originally built to host the Mid-South Fair and the annual Liberty Bowl game, as well as Memphis State football. MSU (UM) did not build the stadium and is still only a tenant, as the city of Memphis owns the stadium... so it isn't exactly an NCAA stadium. Nonetheless, I have edited my post.

RE: Are we getting a new scoreboard?
Was at the FCC game last night and the new video board is sweet. It appears to be split so that there are always two different images being shown. I tried to recall if there was a time that the entire board showed one image and could not remember it. The replays were crisp and easy to see from just about the entire stadium except right underneath it. Not sure if it was just where we were sitting but the audio seems better as well. There were 20000 at the game last night and it was easy to hear everything. Should be good stuff for the first football game next week.

So there was a noticeable change in the audio? Where were you sitting? I didn't think there would be any sound improvements until later.

They said there were some minor improvements, but not a full upgrade.

My friend sent me a few Snapchats from the game and I could hear the announcer pretty clearly. That was the first thing that jumped out at me.
