Nebraska/Oklahoma ended
A&M/Texas ended
Kansas/Missouri ended

If none of those are "essential", I don't think there's any that fit that category.

Army/Navy will always be played as long as the two schools exist.

But in 25 years, they'll be playing soccer.

I think UW vs Oregon has outgrown their respective in state rivalries.

Commander In Chief Trophy began in 1972.
Army/Navy/Air Force/The Citadel/VMI

Yeah, that was before 1-A/1AA divide.

You're probably right, but the Civil War (vs Oregon State) & the Apple Cup (vs Washington State) are kinda like Clean, Old Fashioned Hate (UGA vs GTech). They're still rivalries, but it's against teams that Oregon & Washington don't want lose to, rather than desire to beat the other team.

App State vs Georgia Southern. This one is the real deal.
App State vs Marshall. Always a dogfight back in 1-aa. Series will be renewed in 2021.

I just bought a second home in Grayson County, VA. It is about 45 minutes from Boone.

I plan on catching a game at Appalachian State every now and then. Looking forward to it.

I recommend people add their own schools' rivalries instead of getting a million of the same ones.

For Boise St, the only consistent rivalry we've had in our FBS years are with Idaho early on and BYU now. I'd say keep Boise St/BYU.

I figured since Texas/Texas A&M was discontinued after the "divorce" that it was no longer considered essential.

Good idea. No need to add ones that have already been listed, although you can argue that a listed rivalry is actually nonessential.

Boise State/BYU isn't much of a rivalry to begin with, so I think that's really more of a desired rivalry than an essential one.

Nothing about college football is essential so a rivalry isn't essential. Life will move on. Boise St/BYU is more of a desire but its been a good rivalry.

Nope.
Rivalries are essential otherwise CFB will become a shell of itself. I and many others have no interest in seeing California play Ole Miss for example. Regional and historical rivalries are very important.

Agree 100%.

Games like Cal vs Ole Miss, Texas vs Rutgers, Florida vs Washington St ..... that would be a forced "NFL D-league", which hopefully very few people would watch.

It'd exist just for draft honks and TV networks. I honestly think that's the direction the sport's going down regardless, and it's not going to go back any time soon.

Yup. It is headed towards a 3-tiered Division I football system. How I foresee schools included:

1) B1G, SEC, ACC, PAC, XII, Notre Dame, BYU, Connecticut, Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, Central Florida, South Florida + ?
2) Rest of FBS, Big Sky, MVFC, Ivy, CAA football + ?
3) Rest of Division I

That is a FCS fan fantasy and will never, ever happen.

How does that possibly gain anything over what the system is now??

If you're referring to my previous post, a) I don't see how its an FCS fan fantasy, just what I think could happen, b) my profile doesn't say anything about being an FCS fan but I do like them, c) I never said it was any different from today, it doesn't necessarily change the status quo but it merely shifts it from 2 divisions to 3. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.

The "realignment" excuse is pure BS. Lots of schools have last-game, OOC rivals. Lots of schools have changed conferences and kept their last-game rival. There is no legitimate reason Texas - Texas A&M, Pitt - Penn State, Nebraska - Oklahoma, Kansas - Missouri, et. al. can't play each other. I know you can't schedule every big game from your old conference but you can schedule one. It's been 5 years, more or less, since the last big realignment. Plenty of time for schedules to settle down.

You don't need to apologize at all. I understand what you're saying .... I'm saying, if there is no benefit to such a change, then they won't do it.

I would LOVE to see all schools play their big (one of their big) rivals on the same weekend. It would be great to fill it with as many OOC rivalries as possible.

RE: Essential Division I Football Rivalries
Without the realignment ordeal, we still see long instate rivals that are still being played today.

Colorado/Colorado State
Arizona/Northern Arizona
Arizona State/Northern Arizona
UTEP/Texas Tech/formerly West Texas A&M
New Mexico/New Mexico State
Oklahoma/Oklahoma State/Tulsa

I included West Texas A&M because they were part of the modern football conference era with the FBS/FCS label when the D1 went 1A/1AA in football.
