Our future is now, not next year. Others "C"an't "U"nder "S"tand "A"chieving like we can.
We are like the peanut butter & jelly between G5 and P5. We hold it together.

In all seriousness I don't understand why the commissioners of the MWC, CUSA, MAC, SBC be more like Aresco and set the bar high.

I know. I have never seen such silent, no visionary leaders. They are just going with the flow. No real plan. And I do believe that is why so many G4 fans hate on Aresco so much, they are vocal because they feel threatened by it. When was the last time you heard anything in the national news about any of the other commissioners. Aresco is playing this gig like a Boss. Hell, we here more from him in the news than most of the Autonomous commissioners.

In the case of the MAC it's the ESPN money.

You forget.. CUSA and MWC tried once... Remember the "super conference" that the NCAA shot down.
Would it have worked? Dunno..
But the Powers-That-Be pretty much squashed it outright... it was a big gamble, that might have been impressive if it had been allowed to go through (or it might have fallen flat on its face, but we'll never know now).
Ever since then, I think everyone in the non-appreciated conferences are just reluctant to even whisper anything that seems outside-of-the-box thinking.

Wasn't it that the NCAA didn't shoot it down, it just wouldn't give the new conference two autobids? A 20-24 team league playing for one autobid wasn't tenable.

The plan was for 16 football members, although not that it would have made such a geographically spread-out league that much more tenable.
From this article:
-Air Force, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico and Wyoming, which all currently compete in the Mountain West;
-Alabama-Birmingham, East Carolina, Marshall, Rice, Southern Mississippi, Texas-El Paso, Tulane and Tulsa, which all currently compete in Conference USA;
-Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii, which all currently compete in the Western Athletic Conference, but are set to join the Mountain West in 2012.
Hawaii would have been football-only.
I'll venture a possible alignment:
Eastern: East Carolina, Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB
Central: Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP
Mountain: Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, Wyoming
Pacific: Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV
They could have called it the "Five Time Zone Conference."

I think both conferences would have been better off had they carried out the nationwide merger.

That was the primary part of it Cyn.. BB said he wanted the NCAA to consider it more of an alliance of two conferences in Basketball rather than one single conference, with full scheduling agreements between all the schools.
The NCAA said no, it'd be considered one single conference, with only one auto-bid.
