RE: Dr. John Freeman has passed away
Is that the same John Freeman that a street in the Medical Center is named after (a small one basically connecting Main to Fannin although I think it goes a little past that into Hermann Hospital?).

Very impressive career. But I imagine the street is named after this John Freeman.

Dr. Freeman became Master of Lovett College my Freshman year. In honor of his arrival, several Lovetteers stole that street marker and gave it to Dr. Freeman. He actually hung it in his house the rest of the time he was at Lovett. Because of that, I know the street was not named after him - it had been around a lot longer than he had been at Rice.
Sometimes you look back at your life and have regrets about things that happened and your associated actions/non-actions. I remember Lovett being so rowdy back then (food fights, cafeteria ice fights, fire hose fights, dropping buckets of water on students passing through our quad, etc., etc.). Keep in mind this was back during the Animal House days, when doing crazy stunts and being out-of-control was funny and generally accepted. Finally Dr. Freeman had to step in and start reprimanding the main perpetrators (and there were a lot of us). The result was many of the rowdies at Lovett began to villainize Dr. Freeman. I think his 5 years as Master there was a pretty miserable time, both for him and his wife. I always felt bad about that. He was a good man - and deserved better. About 15 years ago I was attending a Shepherd School concert with my wife, and saw Dr. Freeman there with his wife. I thought briefly about going over there and telling him how much I appreciated his efforts as Master at Lovett, and how I thought so highly of him for hanging in there under such lousy circumstances. Unfortunately, I ended up not going over to him, and now I really regret it.

I agree - I thought he was a really decent guy - soft spoken but always fair with me, and he and his wife were always present for the midnight study breaks in the commons to support the college. As college president my senior year, I never had any issue with him. RIP John.
