I haven't been clicking on these threads because I see them in the facebook groups and on twitter, but I'm glad I did this one. I love the history stuff thrown in. I had no idea a tunnel was proposed under Red Mountain!

It was about this time on April 1st that a daily B'ham news paper ran a Page one picture of cars using a tunnel that appeared to be below the Vulcan statue entitled the "Grand opening of the Red Mountain Tunnel". If a reader read the whole article onto page 2, the tag line at the end said "APTIL FOOL". It was reported that hundreds of cars flooded the southside trying to find that tunnel.

I remember seeing a DC-3 nose down in Village creek after overshooting the relatively short North-South runway - perhaps that one. Today the creek is handled by a covered culvert, the crossing road erased and the runway extended (which is why I-59/20 jogs south near the airport).
