For today's example of "Duh"
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/articl...d=11889732

Quote: Mark Cropp wants to get off the dole, get a job and put food on the table for his family.

But there's one small problem - a giant tattoo saying "DEVAST8" that covers half of his face is proving off-putting for prospective employers.

The Oamaru-born teenager says he had it inked a few months ago, while drunk on homebrew in a jail cell in Christchurch.

He was locked up in 2015, aged 17, for aggravated robbery, after he and a friend pulled a knife on a tourist in Nelson.

The tourist had pulled out of a marijuana sale. Cropp and an associate were trying to sell him a fake "tinnie".

Cropp pleaded guilty in the Nelson District Court to charges of aggravated robbery, escaping custody, assault with a weapon, intentional damage, breach of community work and theft.

Quote:Corrections facilitates access for prisoners to tattoo removal services at low or no cost through Work and Income and a variety of private and non-government organisations, Miles said.

Any applicable cost for the service is funded by the prisoner.

Two offers of access to removal services were made to Cropp but he declined, Miles said.

Quote: He said he had visited job agencies appealing for work.

"One employment place said to me 'I wouldn't employ you with that on you face, I wouldn't even take a second look at you'. I've had other people that just shrugged and laughed at me."

But since putting sharing his plight, he has had a potential scaffolding job offer and has been flooded with well-wishes and suggestions of possible jobs.

People have also suggested growing a beard - he's tried that - or using thick concealer. They've even quoted him for tattoo removal - but he's not sure.

"That's the thing - it's part of who I am. But if it comes down to it, if I have to get rid of it to be a normal person and function in society again, then I have to."

Cropp appealed his 2015 sentence but the High Court at Nelson dismissed the appeal.

Justice Brewer noted Cropp's "significant criminal history", which included convictions for violence and dishonesty.

Would you hire someone who looked like this?

If he's got a skill, it won't matter.

What exactly is his genius?

Oh, he's a dullard, too?

No thanks.

This is something that just gnaws at me. My niece a very vociferous Liberalturd has tats all over her arms and neck. She hates Trump but don't most Liberals do, anyway I can't even look at her Facebook page as it saddens me that my family had to have someone like her in it. Her husband is a tattoo artist so she gets them free.

My wonderment is: Don't these people realize that they WILL get old someday? Her tattoos will be nothing but a splotch of very dull color on their very wrinkly skin and will not even be distinguishable. Oh well, her skin, her life, dumb S.

Hey now, I have several tats, none of them exposed like this maroons, but they can be if I wear short sleeves. They didn't hamper my career one bit and I take offense at others judging me by them - although I just judged the guy too stupid to not have one on his face while expecting to find work. One day soon this will not be our world, it will belong to people younger than us, and societal norms will once again shift with tattoos being a 1 on a scale of 1-10 of detriment. It's already taking place as I know all kinds of young, highly paid professionals who sport them. As a defender of the 1st Amendment for me this falls under free expression.

Maybe he could just get the whole thing inked in so it looks like a beard. I wouldn't hire that guy to be dog catcher.

It depends, Tiger... (again, I've never understood the purpose for tattoos, but to each their own.)

But are your tattoos (if they were visible in shirts) something that the general public would get the wrong impression about you or your ability to perform a job? Or are they just various images that might have a personal meaning to you?

But again, if he's out looking for jobs in places that service the public in a face-to-face issue, then he's screwed. The general population doesn't want to see tattoos like that when they're out and about.

If he's in a non-public job location, then it probably won't matter.

Now that being said, when someone says :

Quote:"That's the thing - it's part of who I am
. (yes, I see the end of the quote).

He sounds like he's trying to do everything he can to NOT to have to lose the tattoo first and foremost, even though he got it during a "drinking spree".

In 1987, tattoos were counter culture.

In 2017, tattoos are like 45 year old suburban guys in cargo shorts mowing their lawns.

In his case, or others like him who choose to have tats on exposed body parts that cannot be covered, I agree with you 100%. Yes, mine have special meanings and none are of an offensive nature. One exposes an American flag underneath my skin so... The others are generally reflective of my children and grandchildren's birthdays, zodiac signs and the like. However, I purposefully placed them where they could be easily covered.

Now, about my nipple rings. (I kid I kid!)
