It's plausible that our forefathers would have been very happy to see 1000's of their countrymen able to enjoy an event together at the same time instead of having to tend to their farms.

Of course, some of the forefathers would have been pissed that there were even black people and white people playing against each other at all.

France, England, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy... ...none of those are third world countries.

They are compared to the United States. Hell, the EU was created just so they could compete with us in trade. Our time is running out though. Soon we'll all just be kicking soccer balls around in empty mall parking lots.

Germany has an excessive trade surplus with the USA. I can't speak for other countries in the E.U. because Germany frankly keeps some of those other countries afloat (like Italy, Spain, and Greece), but while the European Union has strengthened Germany's trade imbalance with the USA, that trade imbalance has existed for well over 30 years now. Not bad for a country roughly half the size of Texas. Germans make quality products, in demand the world over by those with the means to purchase them.

Yeah, when your own products are inferior. The reason we've seen this whole "Buy USA"/"Built in America" campaign is because people have gravitated to superior Japanese and German products. But it's the foreign competition that Americans have to thank for their own products becoming higher quality over the years, as American cars especially had been on the decline prior.

We've done exactly what we've needed to do. We didn't need to build quality cars so we just bought yours. Superior economies delegate labor intensive production to less developed economies. We've done this with China, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. Germany is just a very advanced Vietnam from a U.S. perspective. We're busy with the latest tech like AI. You'll be putting in your cars tomorrow the technology we developed 5 years ago.

All the "Buy American" mumbo jumbo was born out of communities that had seen their manufacturing jobs evaporate. They figured they could stem the tide by forcing American's to buy American. Fortunately/unfortunately the attrition we've seen in manufacturing is due to a shift in the job market from low-tech to high-tech. This is the hallmark of a leading advanced nation. In the future the U.S. will innovate... the rest of the world will build. I don't know how that's going to work out as we'll be sharing our technology with everyone, but one thing's for sure... Bubba better get to technical school with the quickness.

False. According to the HDI, several of these footballing nations are our peers.

The USA is a great country, but there are other great ones as well.

(07-16-2017 06:21 PM)Volkmar Wrote:  Here's why there's an offsides rule in soccer. Without it, strikers would simply lounge in the area near the opponent's goal, as would defenders, and we'd see games that amount to little more than a defender getting the ball and booting it down the field to create what basically amounts to variations of 1 v. 1 scoring opportunities. There would be very little teamwork or flow to the game, and far less action in the middle of the field. The game would be very sterile and devoid of real movement.

The offsides rule adds sophistication and creativity to the game. Yes, it makes it more difficult to score, but goalkeepers and defenders are forced to work on their coordination, as are midfielders, wingers, and strikers. It makes the game more dynamic in the sense that it adds complexity to the game, forcing teams to carefully coordinate their use of spacing and time, and building your way up the field through passes, as opposed to just booting it up the field and hoping for the best in a 1 v 1 or 2 v 2. The offsides rule puts more value on teamwork, formations, and even specialized positions within the framework of a given formation.

For those who may be interested, here's an excerpt on the history of the rule...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offside_%2...29#History

The Two Most Common Criticisms of the Game

Flopping
Believe me, as a soccer fan, it annoys me also, and it actually does most fans of the sport. What's equally annoying though is that it's allowed to go on. There are rules in place against it, most notably within the keeper's box, but they're almost never enforced. It's like the signs we see in Texas everywhere that slower drivers are to keep to the right, but there are people all over the state who will move over for no one, and will ride for hours in the passing lane, forcing others to pass them on the right. That's because it's rarely enforced here. Soccer is the same with regard to flopping.

Flopping puts a black eye on the sport, and an easy way to deal with it is to actually start carding players for it. If a player recklessly challenges other, they're carded. Well if a player is found guilty of flopping they could be given a yellow card in that game as well. They wouldn't even need to card them for every instance. If they're carded just once per game for what's considered flops, and it happens again in the next game, they'd then have to miss the third game for accumulated yellows. When players know they could miss one of every 3 games if they're deemed by officials to be flopping, I guarantee you they'll stop doing it.

As it stands, players are supposed to be carded for flopping inside the keeper's box anyway, but they rarely are. FIFA's lazy Presidents have, over the years, allowed this crap to go on for too long, and that's why we're in the situation we're in right now.

Low Scoring
I love the game because of the action. Some equate excitement with scoring. Some equate excitement with action. Some need both to be entertained. After all, people are different, right? So there's nothing wrong with that.

To me, when I'm watching my teams play, the anticipation of a buildup offensively and its potential for scoring, or the looming threat of an opponent's buildup offensively and their potential for scoring, is where the excitement is built in. I liken it to the phrase, "It's not the destination, but the journey". A 1-1 game can actually be quite entertaining if there are enough buildups and enough scoring opportunities, but the respective defenses were just good enough in the back third to be able to stop them.

That said, the scoring is generally still low. The top scoring leagues in Europe are averaging just over 3 goals per game (so 2-1 might be a typical score). What I've wanted them to do for years is to make the mouth of the goal bigger. The standard professional goal, as regulated by FIFA, is 2.44 meters (8 feet) high, and 7.32 meters (24 feet) wide. Now, think of all the shots which hit the goal posts at either side, or the crossbar. If the goal were made one foot higher and three feet wider, thereby maintaining the 1:3 ratio between height and width, it would be 9 feet by 27 feet, and we'd see a jump in scoring. Purists would have a problem with that, and that's understandable. But at some point, the game has to change with the times. Balls have changed over the years, and there's no definitive standard for the size of the pitch either, just as there isn't in baseball. So considering that keepers today are taller and more agile than they were 40 or 50 years ago, it's an option I feel no one has considered, that probably should be.

Per offsides--it still stagnates the game and eliminates scoring opportunities. Don't get rid of it, just relax it.

By the way, I could deal with a 2-2 game if both teams had 15-20 shots on goal, which means plenty of exciting moments. As it stands, it's possible, though improbable, that an entire game can go on with no shots-on-goal, let alone a scoreless tie.

I believe low global interest rates are the reason the markets won't stop going up. There's literally no other place to put your money except the stock market. The day of reckoning is coming though and it's wayyy past due...

If we have one of those days where the S&P drops 50+ pts. (-2%), pull your **** out and sit in cash for a while. DO NOT buy the dip unless you have considerable assets and/or are very young and won't be touching the money for a long time. The last major correction (2000) took a decade before investment accounts were back to even. We are seeing a lot of similarities to 99-00 market conditions.

The fed interest rate is a far too complex a problem to discuss here. All I can say is that history is not on your side of the argument. In 1979/1980 the fed interest rates were at 20% due to run away inflation.

Contrary, the fed lowered the interest rate to .25 during the 2008 recession to combat many things (bank loan defaults, Wall Street, Auto Industry, Housing crisis, etc.) during the crisis, including mostly consumer confidence/spending. Lessons learned, artificially low interest rates and inflation controlling high interest rates both spelling out bad economies.

Currently we have a slowly rising interest rate due to slightly improvements and a hopeful future in the economy. It took nearly a decade before the fed finally raised the interest rate and has done so a couple of times since Trump took office because of the hopeful better economic signs.

Is the economy rock solid with zero chance of collapse? Of course not, but it is the most solid it's been in more then a decade.

Not bad for a country roughly half the size of Texas. Germans make quality products, in demand the world over by those with the means to purchase them.

Simple economics lesson: When your currency is the strongest, you buy other people's ****.

I'll give you this. You're the best bullshitter I've come across on a board in a long time. lol

Btw, the Euro has been stronger than the dollar for a while now, and Germany's trade surplus with the USA has only grown larger since that time. So much for buying other people's **** when your currency is stronger. But hey, pretty smart of you guys to make more soccer threads when you hate the one that already existed. Enjoy. I'll take my leave.

So you're basically saying soccer will suck even more once the big correction comes, right?

Ultimately a Draw has become a gigantic part of the game, and has been for as long as its played. You'll never see it changed. At one point MLS tried to get rid of it when they first were created, but it hurt attendance.

I think the biggest mistake you see is the belief that ties hurt soccer. I think you'll find a large percentage of Soccer fans are fine with ties. There are situations in which a tie is not an acceptable result, and situations where it is a perfectly acceptable result.

Lets do keep in mind that overall only between 15-20 percent of games end in ties. Most Soccer Teams play at least 50 games a season, and they'll probably tie between 8-12 of those games. About half of those ties are going to be considered a "good result" by the fan base.

You guys have to understand that the idea of overtime and extra innings/whatever is really foreign to most non Americans. They think the idea that we have to have a winner, and teams could continue playing for hours, in theory, until it happened is absurd.

I believe ties and scarce scoring hurt the game of soccer in America. I think it is the primary reason soccer as a spectator sport has not made more conversions despite the evangelical zeal - tinged with patronization - of soccer enthusiasts.

I readily admit I have no hard evidence backing my opinion, but there has to be reasons - whatever they are - keeping Americans from adopting soccer in greater numbers.

The thing is. Numbers indicate that Americans ARE adopting Soccer. MLS attendance continues to go up every year, European clubs now regularly stage matches inside the US to crowds as large as 100K. South America is wanting to move its Continental tournament to the US on occasion because we'll bring in large crowds.

At the Youth levels, the sport that is larger than it has ever been before, to the point that the Youth system is passing several hardline American sports.

The issue is and remains that Soccer is not popular in the United States within certain groups of people (Specifically People in the deep south, older Americans, and hardline football fans) Those are the fans that complain the most about the sport, and fail to understand why its so popular. Most of those are located in areas, or are old enough they were not exposed to it as kids.

The numbers seem to indicate that eventually the sport will grow more in those areas, but its not there yet.

soccer is still weak among college programs and the money for college is still in football and basketball. You will never see that change until there is a way for americas best athletes to get a full ride scholarship in soccer like it is for basketball and football.

white america can keep playing sports like soccer and lacrosse but at the professional level in the united states the best athletes will continue to play in the NFL and NBA and will continue to bring home the ratings.

from coaching high school sports i have come to the realization that every kid(terrible athlete or not) thinks they deserve a chance to be a varsity athlete (work ethic and dedication or not). LAX and Soccer are great for some

Thing is, College Soccer is never going to grow, because its generally a bad idea for top athletes to play it.

The way to become a top Athlete in Soccer is to join an Academy side when you are in Elementary School, play organized tournaments for several years that are heavily scouted for several years, and then jet off to Europe when you turn 16 and play over there. If that fails, join an MLS development side and do the same thing. The only way College Soccer is going to grow is if the NCAA will allow kids to be paid to play Club Soccer during the offseason. Otherwise, it's going to make more sense to skip College and just let the Club pay for your education. (Hell, Most European Clubs pull kids out of school at 11 or 12 years old, and hire tutors to teach them so they can train and play soccer full time)

It's just not the typical American System, and it's never going to be. You have to be committed to an approach to growing your game that is extremely anti typical American Sports.

RE: OT:Official Soccer Sucks Thread
I think Indoor Soccer is the forgotten driver of soccer in the US. When I was growing up, 10,000 fans were packing arenas to watch soccer played in Hockey Rinks with 8-10 goals per game. Then the push came leading up to the World Cup. Advertisers left, claiming it wasn't "real" soccer, and the leagues have been downhill since.

I grew up watching the San Diego Sockers, Dallas Sidekicks, Cleveland Force, Baltimore Blast, Tacoma Stars, Kansas City Comets, Wichita Wings, and the Chicago Sting. Many players were All-American outdoor players, and many used this to build skills to play for MLS once it launched a few years later. There are still some Indoor Leagues.

So what you are saying is that indoor soccer sucks more than outdoor soccer?
