One of the issues later used against the old City Commission (resulting in the 1962 vote to replace it with the Mayor-Council form) was the number of downtown buildings (like the B'ham Theater) lost to street level parking lots. There were fears expressed that eventually all downtown would be dominated by street level parking lots.

Behind Billy's Dog House and Eli's was the WSGN Sky Castle radio broadcasting building. That was where DJ Tommy Charles held forth for years before starting WAQY with Doug Layton. It may be the site where he destroyed as a protest Elvis Pressley (in the 50s) and later Beatles records (in the 60s) on air for maximum publicity. In the first year of the Sky Castle, the radio broadcasts were carried live in the parking lot by loudspeakers but neighbors complained so it was stopped. An enlargement of that picture was on the wall of the Silvertron Cafe on Clairmont.
