I drive a car with batteries... every Sunday....on the fcking golf course. That is my limit.
When they make a "real" car without a combustion engine that I can drive as far and and as fast?...Ill think about it. Im not interested in wearing a damn automobile that has no power, size or range.

So unless the electric car has a solar panel or a great big wind turbine on its roof, it still has to plug into an electric source fueled by a coal fired generator.

The Saudis screwed themselves years ago not cutting production as other members of OPEC wanted in order to drive up the price per barrel. They gambled on keeping market share knowing the U.S. was looking for alternate oil reserves. Throw in Iran re-entering the global market and you have a glutton of oil supply right now. We can enjoy the ride of low gas prices for the short term definitely.

LOL. My car gets 16 mpg. Although, it's not a particularly expensive car (a Hyundai Genesis 5.0).
That being said, I only drive about 8,000 miles a year so gas prices aren't terribly relevant for me.
When I see some sort of Gamma male driving a truck with the big ass tires, I think to myself. One, good luck parking it. Two, gas. Three, the ride sucks. Four, the cost of the damn tires. And then there's the insurance cost.

The Saudi's tried cutting production in the 80's as part of an OPEC imposed cutback. The Saudis' struck a deal with all the other OPEC members and announced the cutbacks. They then did keep their part of the deal. Then, every other OPEC member cheated on it and the net impact was no real impact on prices but with the Saudis losing market share and revenue. Then Russia, desperate for hard currency, flooded the market.
The Saudis don't think that a production cut will accomplish anything other than cutting their own revenue. And the Saudis are kind of hurting for money right now.
The last run up in prices was related more to trading (there was backwardation in the prices as the delivery period became more current, and a persistent discount for physical over financial crude during the super high price time) , and unrealistic expectations of exponential growth in India and China's economy going on forever. The Saudis were terrified, correctly, of the super high oil prices and tried to flood the market. But it didn't work. And eventually technology catches up.

Not really, it could use electricity powered by NG or even (gasp) alternatively sourced power.
The real constraint on true oil/coal free cars is concerned with battery life and cost.
Coal is dying, and nothing can be done to save it. Anyone investing in coal right now should be doing it as a value now proposition and a very short payback time.

LOL. Tell that to Australia.
Or Hong Kong.. which just had their orders of Tesla's fall to _ZERO_ after the Government subsidy was removed (and is off the table until at least 2018).
Basically Tesla's screwed now... cause they wanted to get into China, but they're not gonna manage it without subsidies.

Coal as a power source is definitely a dying breed. Natural gas will eventually replace it as it should. Coal will be around forever tho as it is required for steel, odor control water filtration and numerous other reasons.

Pretty cool. Running a stripped down Tesla in 1/8 mile races. It does haul ass off the line. I doubt he would have won a single race in 1/4 mile. Still pretty sweet.

Right? It's not going to win a 400-mile NASCAR race or haul a large boat to the lake but speed is not an issue (software-limited to 155 mph). Plug it in overnight (non-coal power source) and you have enough range for the next day, just like your phone. No emissions, no oil spills, low maintenance.

I could see my wife driving one....I could likely never be in that market. I do a lot of towing and at 6'4"...very few vehicles fit my comfort needs.

So here we are in the freeway, the LA Freeway, the land of the PC Liberalturd ***** hat wearing Clinton voting public. We get into one of those famous traffic jams, how long can the electric power on one of those cars last? There will probably be a lot of combustion engine driving people waving goodbye to the drivers on the shoulder of the freeway. That's the future for those cars. They can't handle long periods of freeway traffic as electric power is only good for a certain period unlike the comb. eng.

That's a copper mine.
Lithium is extracted from salt water primarily. Lithium mines look like Caribbean blue lakes.

RE: More downward pressure on oil prices coming
I drive between 40,000 & 50,000 miles a year mainly for WKU sports and trips to Ft Lauderdale or the the Gulf (PCB). The last the years we averaged 8 trips to Ft Lauderdale which is a 14 to 15 hour drive and 6 trips to the Gulf and thats a 9 hour drive. If a vehicle can't handle enough space for two weeks of travel and make that drive I will not be interested in it. I don't want to turn a one day drive, a long one, still one day...into 2.5 or 3 days. So unless a charge can take place with in minutes long trips will be out of the question.
Not to mention the time sitting in line waiting to charge up. Three to five minutes and you are full of gas and moving on.
But I sure would love to see more of you driving those plugged up cars....the lower gas prices get, I like.

With an 85 kw model s, you can get about 200 miles of charge in 20 minutes. Considerably worse than 3-5 minutes for a full up, but it would add hours to a very long trip, not days.
The next generation of chargers that Tesla and Volkwagen (and probably others) are working on are targeting 300 miles in less than 10 minutes. VW has stated theirs will do 6 minutes.
Whether it happens remains to be seen, but I think most people would have thought the current supercharger wouldn't be possible 10 years ago. Technology changes fast.

Lithium battery and solar cells needs have created huge demand and price increases for cobalt and rare eaths and manganese too. Been investing in those industries as well as lithium.
