I grew up playing Shenvalee. The Olde 9 is the original course that open in the 20s and I think the only Donald Ross designed course in the valley. It is short with small greens. It looks easy but don't let it fool you. Anything left is out of bounds on 8 of the holes. The Creek and Miller are later designs like modern golf courses. Beautiful views of the mountains and affordable. Beer drinking is encouraged.
If you like country cooking. Southern Kitchen post round is 30 seconds away.
Lakeview is nice as well and a bit more challenging. I would not play Packsaddle. Great views on some holes but circus golf. Same with the mountain course at Massanutten. The executive course at Massanutten is usually in good shape but very easy.
I remember playing Massanutten. Very frustrating to land a drive on the left edge of the fairway, only to have it roll completely across the side hill to the right rough. Scenic but gimmicky.

Great review! Never played at Shenvalee, but played the others and agree!

I agree a bazillion percent. Best fried chicken in the country and the pies are amazing as well.
I am not a golfer (but I drive a mean beer cart) but I do love Southern Kitchen cooking.

Shenvalee is a great course and was a go to for my Dad and I when he made it down to JMU. Another course that is a little further way is the golf course at Cacapon State Park in West Virginia. I have not played it in many years, but price is good and it was always in great shape. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones.

Speaking of Birdwood, announcement made yesterday that Davis Love III is going to redesign it. I think it is still UVA Golf Team's home course.

yesterday, at Heritage Oaks, I rolled a long three iron into what looked like a golf towel from 185 yards. It turned out to be a snake that had no intention of moving along.
I like Heritage Oaks, I had not been there in years.
It would be great if JMU could own Heritage and DC members could get merit rates...we Bourne to get on that (JK).

During my time at JMU students were allowed to play on weekdays at Massanutten's course (Mountain Green I think it's called), and it was dirt cheap too. The only catch- had to walk. That course was a beautiful, brutal walk with everything a mountain course should have- elevation changes, severe slopes and beautiful views. I would love to play it again

What part do you not recommend? The course itself? Walking the course? Or playing golf with your gf?
