UTSA actually has a pretty good defense. Our offense wasn't very good but the D kept us in games & they are young

How did I waste my time? Your response is a perfect example. How is my ranking any more or less important than the next one? It's a preseason poll based on nothing. Every ranking submitted is based on obscure opinions which are based on either what they think certain schools will be or they have read other obscure opinions on what they think teams will be.

So because my rankings don't mirror your own thinking then it's automatically tossed aside yet the only thing you have to compare is your own meandering. 01-wingedeagle

It's a shame you didn't explain polls to Hillary like that. She might not have taken the loss so hard 03-razz

CUSAbbs Preseason Football Poll
So we're up to post #85, and only three people think Rice doesn't belong in the bottom third.

1. MU Guy whose poll didn't count.
2. UAB Guy didn't do a ranking
3. Rice Guy (moi) who hasn't done his yet.

It'll take me a while, I'm doing a projection of each game and crunching the standings/rankings from there.
I will tip that I've already got Rice with 7 regular season wins against a tough schedule which should put us in the top third of the conference.

We'll talk more in a few days... meantime - just remember that FIU and Rice have the most returning starters in the league (both bringing back almost everyone) and both programs have upgraded their coaching staffs with NFL experience.

RE: CUSAbbs Preseason Football Poll
Western (hey someone has to be #1 might as well be the team that loss 1 out of last 21 conference games)

UTSA (last year just had a look of being stronger than a lot of CUSA schools...think its your year)

Middle (got one of the easier conf schedules but if you cant get past Western it wont matter)

Tech (if you beat UTSA you most likely switch to 2nd)

FIU (just seems like a good spot for you..if not here or 6th I can see FIU in the 10th range got to beat FAU for any shot at a top 6 finish)

USM (as with ODU QB play will move you down if its not good)

ODU (to be honest this depends on QB play)
---------------------------BOWL LINE

Marshall (think internal problems get fixed)

UNT (if you lose more than 1 conf game at home...could easily be in a fight with two team below you for place of finish)

FAU (Road schedule is just to tough..@Wisconsin, @WKU, @TECH, @ODU and Middle & Navy or I would have flipped with FIU

Charlotte (going to have to win 1 out of @s.miss, @ODU, @WKU and beat FAU to end season or you switch

UTEP (one heck of a tough schedule and if you lose to UAB ..be pushing Rice for last place. Been planning this road trip for months)

UAB (think you could finish 2 spots higher but with Middle & Tech at home and S, Miss & UTSA on the road you will need to win @UNT to do it)

Rice (Maybe this finish get you a new coach)

So take off the troll and the last one that still leave 2 from your vote total

1. Middle Tennessee. Returning one of the best QB's in the league and one of the best WR's in the country along with the same coaching staff. But can they play a lick of defense?

2. Louisiana Tech. Returning the same coaching staff and should be solid in the trenches. Would normally ding a team for a new QB but we've had a new starter for the past 3 seasons. Will the secondary play better and can we come close to replacing Henderson and Taylor's production?

3. Western Kentucky. Returning an extremely solid team but a new coaching staff will make it interesting to watch how everything develops.

The top 3 are really almost interchangable.

4. Marshall. Consistent team in the past with plenty of talent, should be competitive in the East. Was last year's team a fluke or have they been eating at Fat Patty's too much and lost their edge?

5. Old Dominion. Wilder has been building a solid program and this could be their year to show out against the top teams in the East.

6. UTSA. A program that has been making strides towards competing for the West title. Do they battle Tech in Ruston for the Western crown or does Frank Wilson have a sophomore slump?

Last 4 out: Southern Miss, UNT, Florida Twins

I can't really count this unless you finish it top to bottom. If you round out your bottom teams I can put it in

Thanks for this, turns out I left off my own bro in AdoptedMonarch after responding letting him know his poll was fine! LeeistheKey barely missed the cutoff yesterday so it wasn't included either, so those are the 2. Thanks for keeping me in check, someone needs to

I am glad we get UTSA at home this season. I believe this game will deciede the West more times than not going forward. I'll add USM to the list as well. They are definitely our achilles heel.

Predicting a down year for your guys?

We may be the first team in college football history to have a losing record while averaging 50 points a game. I'm expecting 6-6 overall with a conference record of 5-3 (tied with FAU but losing tiebreak).

The problem is this and always has been this in recent years. Tommy West.

Tommy West couldn't produce a functional defensive line when we had four seniors starting across the front four - all of whom had extensive experience. Not only were they experienced seniors on the defensive line it was also our biggest DL that we've ever had. The DT's went 300 lb+ and the DE's were 260/270 range with some speed. Heck Rhodes once played wide receiver in his military days. Yet they all did next to nothing. Rhodes is a good case study. As you would expect he was more mature and stronger than your average college player. Had a whopping 8 TFLs and 4 sacks. He's in Titans camp right now, so its not a talent issue. Think about that for a second.

So, the secondary is in good shape and the inexperience that we had at LB last year is now a strength, but will we have anybody up front who can keep the guards off our LBs? Whereas we went 300+ on the DL last year it looks like our starting DT's this year are going to be lighter than our DE's from last year. Could be starting DT's that weight 250 to 270 lbs. That's I-AA size on the D-Line.

The bottom line is we face three teams (P5's) right off the bat all of which have big offensive lines and run the ball very well. If Vandy, Minnesota or Syracuse throw a single pass against us they are idiots. Ralph Webb may break the Vanderbilt rushing record (321) to open the season inside Floyd Stadium. They will all three likely run it down our throats because we won't be able to stop it. They will control the clock and keep Stockstill and Co. off the field. The rest of the league will take notice. Those that can run the ball with any efficiency at all will bludgeon our small, inexperienced defensive line. It's really disheartening to realize that we are going to have one of the top 5 offenses in the nation and will have very good core of experience and talent on most of the defense but one group - the defensive line - is going to cost us a lot of games.

If Tommy West can't get production out of what he had last year how in the world would anyone expect him to do anything with what he has this year? That is a rhetorical question. It's Tommy West.

You ranked them and then called them pointless. It's for fun, it's the offseason. I don't care who you rank where.

Why am I surprised? Same person that got mad because someone was mean to them on Twitter.

RE: CUSAbbs Preseason Football Poll
Rick Stockstill's blind loyalty to West is beyond comprehensible.

If he fired West this afternoon and immediately replaced him with dahbeed - even as he surely attempts to undermine the DL - I would say we win 10 games and the east.

There is no way to explain with words how inept West is at his job - or perhaps the fact that he just doesn't care. Not sure which.

For sure! It's fun. I wonder how frequently we should do this during the season. Every week would be overkill for me. I'm thinking doing one after non-conference games are done, then another at the midpoint of conference play, and then a final one after the CUSA championship.
