It will probably be 2028 for LA and 2024 for Paris. From what I've read, LA has signaled that they'll wait for 2028 if the IOC gives them money to keep their LA Olympics committee funded between now and 2028.

With new venues being few and far between in LA, you know it's the last place the IOC wants to be

The IOC does want to be in LA. They can't stiff the USOC every time they apply to host, because so much of the IOC's sponsorship revenue comes from US corporations. And right now LA is the only US locale that has both enough resources and little-enough local opposition to host.

And interest...it wouldn't take much money for the games to be hosted in Houston or Dallas.

Summer Olympics in Houston? Maybe if they hold them in November. It would be crazy to hold 'em in July or August in Houston.

The IOC knew it needed to come back to the US for the very reason you stated. But they hoped that CHI, BOS or NYC would be the host city. I don't think the IOC or the USOC expected such high resistivity from other American cities.

Yeah, they had to take special measures to deal with Atlanta heat in 96, and both Dallas and Houston would be worse.

I think this is going to be a problem going forward. Give the olympics to cities/countries that are wholly unprepared but willing to going deeply into debt to host, or give them to the small handful of locations who remain willing to host simply because they DON'T have to invest too much? The market is shrinking as potential hosts become unwilling to participate in these graft-soaked, money pit events.

Option 3 is to award these circuses to authoritarian regimes that don't have any real checks on the amount of money spent on the games or the amount of money given to IOC or FIFA officials under the table. Olympics in Russia and China, World Cups in Russia and Qatar.

You act as if LA is a walk in the park. Trust me, as a native Southern Californian, LA is no picnic unless you're near the beach. They held them in Atlanta, they can certainly be held in Houston.

This is not just wrong, but spectacularly wrong. You lived in the motherf'ing inland empire where the hi temps are 10-15 degrees more than coastal SoCal where the vast manority of events were held. Atlanta was a source of significant concern for many events and they had to take special measures to account for those conditions. Dallas or Houston would be hotter still than Atlanta, and more humid (at least in the case of Houston). It's a terrible idea.

But I also spent much time in Carson. I do admit the weather was amazing. That said, LA summers can suck depending on where you are.

Sure they can, but it's occasional and much less severe than places like Houston and Dallas, where there is basically no chance of relief during the summer.
In 1984 there were completely legitimate concerns about conditions in LA, like traffic and smog, and those are still legitimate concerns (smog a little less so, but traffic perhaps a litte more so IMHO). But LA summer temps are pretty consistent with many other Olympics hosts, and completely manageable.

Paris in 2024 and LA in 2028 is a done deal, according to this LA Times article, with an official announcement to follow.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/...story.html

Quote:Los Angeles has reached an agreement with Olympic leaders on terms that will pave the way for hosting the Summer Games in 2028 instead of 2024, according to a source close to the negotiation.
