Not necessarily true. Last season UTEP and RICE practically begged for admission into the MW. If an invitation from the MW to UTEP is extended we are out of CUSA in a heartbeat no questions asked.

Adding 2 more teams at this point will not take away any significant revenue... and if done creatively, CUSA can reduce travel and operate each division like mini-conferences.
16 has always been that mythical number in collegiate sports. CUSA can grab the bull by the horns and gain attention for being the first.
No doubt, Texas State and Georgia State should be in CUSA. If they add the Bobcats, their 5 team Texas group would get a lot of pub and may even anchor an improved TV deal. There are a lot of eyeballs in the Lone Star state, and a 5 team group can develop a culture for CUSA. Meanwhile, Georgia State is going to have one of the nicest stadiums in CUSA. They'd fill in that Southeastern corner nicely.
Does CUSA have a choice at this point? Go big or go home.
If it doesn't work out then they can make a clean split and have two very nice pieces. When the WAC16 split, it actually provided a decent springboard for both sides. Though that wouldn't be the goal to expand. If the Western group had Texas State, they may someday revive the SWC brand (at that point perhaps adding an Arkansas State and Missouri State). The Eastern CUSA could answer by adding JMU and Coastal.
RE: Will CUSA expand within the next 3 years? (adding Texas State and Georgia State)
Here's what we do: Merge the Sun Belt and CUSA, add JMU and Missouri State for 26 schools.
Football
* 13 divisions of two teams apiece (UTEP-UTSA, Rice-Texas State, North Texas-Louisiana Tech, ULL-ULM, Arkansas State-Missouri State, FIU-FAU, South Alabama-Southern Miss, Troy-UAB, WKU-Middle Tennessee, ODU-JMU, Charlotte-Coastal Carolina, Marshall-Appalachian State, Georgia State-Georgia Southern)
* Week 1-2: Home-and-home with the other team in your division. All division winners and three wild-card teams advance to the conference tournament (score differential is first tiebreaker, points scored on the road is second, coin flip is third). Everyone else plays in a lower tournament except for the worst two teams, which play a worst-of-5 Series of Ignominy.
* Weeks 3-6: Tournament play.
* Week 7: Bye
* Week 8: Tournament placement games, from 1st to 23rd.
* 1st-place game is televised by Stadium on delay, all other games are broadcast on Periscope using fans' iPhones. Nobody watches and no money changes hands.
* Everyone goes to crappy bowls anyway.
* In an effort to boost interest, Sun Belt/CUSA plans expansion to 32 schools and 16 divisions, eliminating the possibility of 0-2 teams reaching the championship tournament Basketball
* No in-conference play
* Automatic bid is determined by committee. Other sports
* All champions are determined by cheese roll
Future
* bright.
Sound good?

In the end the MWC TV contract did not have a scaling mechanism to increase revenue to absorb two more schools, and the Playoff payout was maxed at 10 schools for G5 -- doesn't matter if you have 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 16, you get the same cut. It will be interesting to see if the talks are renewed in 2019 when the 2020 TV contracts come up.

Strictly speaking, it's $1m/school for up to 10 FB schools ... but now that Coastal Carolina has brought the SBC up to 10 FB schools, it's $10m all around.
Quote: Going to 16 makes no sense, but for the sake of this discussion Georgia State and Texas State would be great additions. Two large schools in large markets and a lot of upside with both schools. Adding Texas State would mean that CUSA was in every large market in Texas. That can't be a bad thing.
So, to summarize: silly premise, not the silliest of picks given the silly premise.

Status quo isn't working so well.
You either expand or contract and I think contraction will be a lot harder than expansion.
The flaw in the logic here is that it treats the reason that the status quo is not "working so well" as something unique about 14, instead of being too large with greater travel costs for no substantial benefit. Expanding certainly is easier than contraction, the problem is that expansion with any available pair of schools does not fix the problems of the current alignment ... it just makes them worse.
Coastal Carolina will bring the Sun Belt to 12 teams this season. Once NMSU and Idaho are gone, the conference goes to ten schools or an even $1 million per school.
It is a silly premise. Going to 16 makes no sense for CUSA and for a school leaving the Sun Belt there is a $2 million exit fee and joining CUSA will cost a $2 million entry fee. It makes no sense for this to happen. It is a fantasy scenario.
More importantly, it causes the Sun Belt to backfill with a couple more FCS schools, creating more competition for attention and recruits in the South.

While true, I'm not sure how long it would last and begrudgingly move to the MW and severing ties to the Texas schools. The alumni presence is too big to ignore in the main cities of Texas to move from CUSA...even with a low TV contract. If CUSA even gets an increase in the next contract, then look for UTEP to stay. Basically, UTEP in CUSA seem to be the only thing that keeps them as a Texas school being so far out from the rest of the populated state.
RE: Will CUSA expand within the next 3 years? (adding Texas State and Georgia State)
UTEP and Rice did well on ESPN network in ratings. Going to CBSSports hurt them. The G5 should band together to try and sell a G5 Network. May need to add some schools from states not in the G5 network to sell. I could see Alaska schools for all sports so to get the network sold there and in getting Vermont.
G5 Network could add these schools for all sports for all year round:
Eastern Washington
Portland State
Montana and Montana State
North Dakota State
South Dakota State
Wichita State
Northern Iowa
Missouri State
UCA could bring a market.
Little Rock if they add football
UTA if they add football
West Texas A&M upgrading
Central Oklahoma upgrading
Lamar
Angelo State upgrading
McNeese State
Sam Houston State
SFA
UTRGV
Mankato State upgrading
Illinois State
Indiana State
Youngstown State
Milwaukee for basketball and later add football
Wayne State, Mich. upgrading
Jacksonville State
Jackson State in case Southern Miss goes somewhere.
North Alabama
Chattanooga
East Tennessee State
Eastern Kentucky
North Florida adding football later
FGCU adding football later
Gonzaga
St. Mary's
Valparaiso
Dayton
VCU
Kennesaw State
James Madison
William and Mary
Towson
Kutztown upgrading
Slippery Rock upgrading
Stony Brook
Albany
Central Conn. State incase UConn gets invited to a P5 conference.
Delaware
URI
Davidson
College of Charleston
Shepherd upgrading
Rowan wants in D1.
New Hampshire
Maine
Holy Cross
Long Beach State
Northern Arizona
Augusta
Azusa Pacific
Bellarmine
UC-San Diego (good basketball, and could create a crosstown rival in basketball. Would be the UCLA/USC of the G5.)
Colorado Mesa (Beach Volleyball and some other sports as filler)
Dallas Baptist
Arkansas Tech
Lindenwood
St. Louis
LIU-Brooklyn and LIU-Post merges. Post will upgrade football to FCS level.
Minn.-Duluth
Colorado-Colorado Springs
New York Tech
North Georgia
Texas A&M-Kingsville
West Chester
Some could be affiliates for single sports to cover missing pieces, while others could bring very good basketball and baseball to the G5. This could boast their RPIs. As for this? This could split the weak D1 from the strong D1 to create a 1AA basketball championship and other sports. Some of the D2 schools are stronger than many of the weaker D1 schools. Bellarmine could beat a lot of schools in their area in Men's basketball. Arkansas Tech did beat a D1 men's basketball team a few years ago in an exhibition. Chaminade and Alaska-Anchorage did beat strong D1 basketball teams in their tournaments in Hawaii and the Great Alaska Shootout. If you do supply demands of the best teams? People would buy into it. That is what the issue with C-USA. They brought in weak teams that did not sell well with broadcasters. Old Dominion and UTSA are exceptions for being new, and still getting it done on the field.

RE: Will CUSA expand within the next 3 years? (adding Texas State and Georgia State)
If the NCAA would allow C-USA to split up and split their credits then the East and the West could each add 1-3 schools and things would be rosy.
I agree with the OP that Georgia St with their media market and retrofitted stadium are the best choice in the East followed by Appalachian St and Georgia Southern.
In the west I think Texas St is at best the third west option after Arkansas St and ULL.

The thing is---options #1 and #2 lose money moving to CUSA. It makes sense for Texas St because I think regular games with the other Texas teams in CUSA will fill enough seats make it work. I also think it aids in getting more Texas States on fanbase interested (certain to happen when the Bobcats eventually start winning--which is inevitable---too much talent around them).
For Georgia St, the pay off isnt all that grand. In fact---I dont think there is a payoff. I think Georgia St might say no to that offer (at least as things now stand).

Yup. Nothing like DavidSt posting 143 options for CUSA that he deems more worthy than Georgia St. I believe Lindenwood and West Chester are particularly thought provoking. I think he's become our third biggest rival behind GS and USA. His hatred is strong.

Georgia State is not a valuable candidate for C-USA. C-USA got burned in adding North Texas, FIU, FAU and Charlotte. 4 vary large markets, but no success in tv ratings. Georgia State brings nothing for tv ratings to actually helped C-USA. Arkansas State, Troy, Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, La-Lafayette and even Texas State have more viewers in ratings. Being like a fourth to fifth team in football in the state of Georgia does not helped them at all.
Like I said, Texas State can't be added. Lamar or another school not already in the San Antonio market will get the call before them. The only time they would get in is when UTSA goes to AAC asa replacement for Houston.
