I like the idea of going to OKC with the tournament. Yet, I also like the idea of cultivating Memphis as the permanent home.

Please inform me what is so appealing about OKC hosting the tournament?

It sits right on the I35 corridor, and offers great access to schools in the Western region.
Attendance would be great and its in a neutral city that is becoming identified with basketball. The idea of a neutral city intrigues me as well.
I think its a good area to plant a flag.

I get having a neutral city if you have no better options but we have schools in GREAT cities that are basketball cities - Memphis, Philly, Houston, Dallas and NOLA. I would not call OKC a great basketball city and it is not a destination city by any means. Plus, people there only care about OU and the Big 12. It offers decent access to only four of the twelve schools (WSU, Tulsa, SMU and Houston). Also, why do you think attendance would be great?

No one is going to a conference tournament for a vacation, if that was the case Orlando would have killed it. (Ok perhaps a couple hundred truely dedicated fans do it as a vacation) The argument that people will go to New Orleans or Orlando for the tournament just doesn't hold water. Access, access, access. One of the reasons the ACC and the big east had such good tournaments was the access of multiple teams to the location.

I concede these points, OKC is not a destination, it is not a basketball city, and they have their head completely up the Big X-II arse.

In return it is conviently close for five of the schools, it has a top notch facility, and will be the only game in town so to speak.

Tulsa has two great facilities next to each other to hold mens and womens, the media here will give it the push and coverage it deserves. It is centrally located 5 or 6 schools realitively close (possible to drive). It is not a destination. The courts aren't a home court for tulsa, one is nba caliber.

Memphis, good location, 5 or 6 are close, great local support, great arena, past performance record, not a bad destination. Arena is Memphis home court.

Dallas, good location, 5 or 6 close again, neutral arenas, decent destination.

Cincinnati, see memphis minus destination and one school in closeness.

Anything else in the east doesn't have good access for multiple schools (more than 3).

You are dead wrong about WBB. The Final of the AAC WBB tournament has been UCONN vs USF every year (other than 2014 when it was UCONN vs Louisville). The 3rd best school in the conference is Temple. In no way, shape, or form should the WBB tournament be held anywhere but the Northeast or Tampa until the rest of the conference begins to acquire a pulse or acquire more than 10 fans.

People in the OKC area, unless they are alumni, wouldn't step out their front door to watch an American team if the games were being played in the street. Additionally their media wouldn't provide any coverage unless they decided to deride it.

I agree with most of this but as far the only game in town I'm quite sure 95% of OKC basketball fans will only be interesting in the tournament being played in KC (I believe that is where the B12 tourney is held). I would much rather have it in Tulsa than OKC.

RE: Memphis to host 2019 conference basketball tournament
I think Memphis is the logical choice if the AAC is going to go with a single site and a member city. I think the conference would benefit from a regular tournament location that is more or less a central location for members, along with destination amenities, ease of travel, and excellent facilities. I'd rather it be a neutral city though. Don't have a suggested option at the moment, however.

You need to make up your damn mind about how many schools are close by. Is it 5 or 6? I swear you're like Eddie Murphy in Another 48HRS. constantly increasing the number of times he rolled over in a bus. If you keep posting I'm sure you'll get that number up to 12.

Put it in Memphis and keep it there. If that chaps your a$$ because its Memphis' home court...too bad. MSG is St John's home court and I saw zero complaints about that in the 20+ years UCONN played there for the oBE tourney.

I like the concept of rotating the tourney site, but money is likely the main determining location factor.

Maybe when & if Memphis ever starts winning the tourney, it being the Memphis homecourt might be an issue.........hoping it become an issues soon, but no worries currently.

RE: Memphis to host 2019 conference basketball tournament
So we have this widespread conference and we are determined to find a place that will magically bring lots of traveling fans. Instead, we should follow the NIT plan: play the first rounds at the better teams home court, and the semifinal games at a rotating location. Home teams and their fans can benefit from a couple of extra games without traveling until the final four teams have earned their spots.

No, no, a thousand times NO!! You do that and you forever brand the AAC mid-to-low major. The whole point of adding WSU was to prevent the exact thing you're suggesting we do with your....misguided proposal.

Idk how many times it needs to be said, but if you stick the tournament anywhere within 6 hours of Wichita we will single handedly solve any attendance issues. The city doesn't matter. Trying to find a city that gets 2k fans from every school is impossible. I would prefer OKC to Tulsa and our administration probably does too, along with whoever else is pushing OKC.

I like rotating the tourney. Different places to go. I wouldn't want it at home every year.

I also think the idea of a central location is overblown. With the exception of the new guys, I don't think many of our basketball fan bases travel that well. Especially not as far as you have to travel in this conference.

Since this thread is full of....ridiculous suggestions, why don't we just put the tournament in Vegas? I mean, it's obvious no conference has thought of doing something like this, so we'll be looked at as geniuses!!

Of course you do. You've also had some other ridiculous thoughts recently, so your dislike of an MSG type situation for this conference is SOP for you.

Worked great in the Big East, when most of the schools were within driving distance of NYC. In that case, fine. I actually like that better, in that situation.

But, we're spread from Storrs to Houston to Orlando, so not exactly the same dynamic.

As for your condescending comment, that's par for the course for you. Not sure why you want to make everything personal.

Put the game in Ok. City and WSU will bring 8,000 fans (maybe more). Tulsa maybe 6-7,000. Memphis may bring that many but won't stick around for Sunday.

Doubtful. You should revisit one of the attendance threads.

So it's better to have 75 fans watching anyone but UConn play when the tournament is in Hartford? I don't know if the Shocker fans can deliver the fans they say they can, but the rest of us have shown little ability to bring crowds anywhere. How does playing at home courts make us second rate? Because that's not how the Old Big East did it? News flash, we ain't the Big East! If we want to project robust tournament games, my idea works. Memphis may be a great town, but the stands will be empty when the Tigers aren't playing.

When a new conference brand starts up, you need time to establish patterns.

The NBE is benefiting from decades of the Syracuses, UConns, etc, going to MSG to play their tournament games there. Those crowds are being drawn largely though nostalgia.

The AAC didn't inherit those viewership patterns. It needs to build them. Just like it needed to build basketball programs at SMU, UCF, etc. It's taken time.
It's not surprising we haven't seen traveling fanbases when many schools are now getting their programs going under new coaches.

Now is a good time to start building those patterns. Wichita State came at a good time in the development of the conference.
