How about we put it in Hartford?

RE: Memphis to host 2019 conference basketball tournament
I have no problem with Memphis personally, but I think it's slightly small time that the tournament is played on a school's home court. No major conference plays their tournament on a school's home court (Don't call MSG St. John's home court because it isn't) Hell, most mid-major conferences play theirs on neutral courts.

Do AAC schools struggle that badly bringing in fans for the conference tournament? I mean, anybody can fill their arena at home when they pull a decent team, I would think (well, maybe not UConn). Hell, the crappy Valley tournament had 10,000 fans a game at its neutral site in its neutral city.

I'm not sure where you place it, but I think the tournament should be played on a neutral floor if it all possible.

It sits right on the I35 corridor, and offers great access to schools in the Western region.
Attendance would be great and its in a neutral city that is becoming identified with basketball. The idea of a neutral city intrigues me as well.
I think its a good area to plant a flag.

I get having a neutral city if you have no better options but we have schools in GREAT cities that are basketball cities - Memphis, Philly, Houston, Dallas and NOLA. I would not call OKC a great basketball city and it is not a destination city by any means. Plus, people there only care about OU and the Big 12. It offers decent access to only four of the twelve schools (WSU, Tulsa, SMU and Houston). Also, why do you think attendance would be great?

No one is going to a conference tournament for a vacation, if that was the case Orlando would have killed it. (Ok perhaps a couple hundred truely dedicated fans do it as a vacation) The argument that people will go to New Orleans or Orlando for the tournament just doesn't hold water. Access, access, access. One of the reasons the ACC and the big east had such good tournaments was the access of multiple teams to the location.

I concede these points, OKC is not a destination, it is not a basketball city, and they have their head completely up the Big X-II arse.

In return it is conviently close for five of the schools, it has a top notch facility, and will be the only game in town so to speak.

Tulsa has two great facilities next to each other to hold mens and womens, the media here will give it the push and coverage it deserves. It is centrally located 5 or 6 schools realitively close (possible to drive). It is not a destination. The courts aren't a home court for tulsa, one is nba caliber.

Memphis, good location, 5 or 6 are close, great local support, great arena, past performance record, not a bad destination. Arena is Memphis home court.

Dallas, good location, 5 or 6 close again, neutral arenas, decent destination.

Cincinnati, see memphis minus destination and one school in closeness.

Anything else in the east doesn't have good access for multiple schools (more than 3).

You need to make up your damn mind about how many schools are close by. Is it 5 or 6? I swear you're like Eddie Murphy in Another 48HRS. constantly increasing the number of times he rolled over in a bus. If you keep posting I'm sure you'll get that number up to 12.

Put it in Memphis and keep it there. If that chaps your a$$ because its Memphis' home court...too bad. MSG is St John's home court and I saw zero complaints about that in the 20+ years UCONN played there for the oBE tourney.

Whether it is five or six depends on your definition as the sixth is 11-12 hours while the 5 is 9-10. Personally i think 12hr drive is just inside the range people are willing to drive on a long weekend. But many people won't drive more than 8-10 hours. So it depends. I consider a close school driving distance.

No school is going to travel like wsu right now, especially with them just now entering the conference.

However pretty sure any school that is decent and within a five hour drive of the location will bring people. If its memphis, or cincinnati, or uconn you could expect a wichita like following. Tulsa, SMU, and Temple would bring respectable crowds if good. Houston could too but hasn't recently. UCF is showing signs it could.

ECU, USF, and Tulane who knows

they have an NBA quality arena in the BOK center...

plus Tulsa is the home team while WSU is 2.5 hours, SMU is 4 hours, and Memphis is 5.5 hours away.

that's easy access for 4 strong hoops fan bases.

on top of all of that...it's a truly neutral court unlike FEF or the XL Center

2018: Orlando (Amway Center)
2019: Memphis (FedExForum)
2020: Tulsa (BOK Center)

RE: Memphis to host 2019 conference basketball tournament
Memphis has been the standard bearer in terms of attendance for the conference for almost two decades now and there's a reason - basketball crazy town, centralized location, school and alumni supports the team, excellent facilities (even the flawed Pyramid was better than most C-USA venues) and now that you have an NBA arena right next to Beale Memphis needs to be the backbone of the tourney - it's the best option.

But rotating it a little is good for the conference. So how about this? Hold the tourney in Memphis every other year and rotate it between reasonable locations in the in-between years:

Memphis
Dallas
Memphis
Cincinnati
Memphis
Philadelphia
Memphis
New Orleans

Obviously the rotational cities are up for debate. But Memphis has shown it's the best option for the conference in almost all aspects and now that WSU is in it's even more centralized and will be even better attended. Give the conference a chance to both keep it's proven asset and grow. 'Zat make sense?

I'd take one Memphis out, and add Tulsa, I figure Tulsa will get at least one of the 20-22 years.

the key to tournament attendance is giving folks who's teams drop out a reason to stick around because there is plenty else to do besides basketball. I'm not sure Tulsa really delivers that (dont get me wrong, very nice place but is there 4-5 days worth of stuff for out of towners to do?)

I'd say there's just as much stuff to do as Hartford CT...you go for the hoops.

Tulsa is boring and delivers WAY more than Hartford.

Totally depends on what you like to do. Tulsa has casinos like most everyone else these days. If you like museums the Philbrook and Gilcrease are both very good art museums. A half hour to the northwest is Woolaroc, a history museum of the west from pre-Colombian to modern times created by Frank Phillips. They have a lot of good local restaurants to explore. There's a nice zoo. I'm sure there are many more things I haven't thought of to entertain visitors other than basketball.

LOL. False. You obviously haven't been to both cities or simply didn't know where to go.

yep, just off the top of my head...see downtown attractions like the Guthrie Center, Philbrook Downtown, Cain's ballroom, and eat at Ti Amo and Juniper. (plus casino's and a decent zoo)

The key to tournament attendance is having the tournament site reasonable driving distance from the schools with the largest travelling fanbase. The site should be halfway between Wichita and Memphis for any western location. Fayetteville Arkansas? Bud Walton arena seats 20k. Little Rock has a nice 18k arena.

There better be other things because you haven't been entertaining anybody with basketball for a long time.

I can vouch for Philbrook, it's cool. But it's a one-timer. You don't go again after you've seen it once.
