What the hell happened in 2012?
During this sports funk I tend to watch old games. Watched the 2012 opener at Nebraska. That team wasn't nearly as bad as the record. The quarterback who started had talent. Defense played well against a good Nebraska club.

Anybody but buttermilk would have won 6-7 games minimum.

Unfortunately though buttermilk was in charge that year

Everyone knows we had enough talent to go to a bowl game that year...but it doesn't matter how much talent you have when you've got a senile old man as the head coach.

Funny, I was just looking at some old box scores/recaps/quotes from that season this morning.

I knew we were screwed after the FTTT loss vs ECU.

Another thing was that was our best home schedule in recent memory. Louisville, Boise, Marshall and ECU. Could have been a pretty fun season with a halfway competent coach.

That season alone probably cost the university more in lost revenue that anything else in the past 50 years.

I remember that well. I remember being surprised we pulled the plug on our QB when we did in that game. That coaching staff was a joke.

EJ on that first Nebraska game: "Well, I knew going into halftime down 28-7 we weren't going to win so I decided to play a bunch of freshman I had just recruited and burn a bunch of red-shirts"

It really is amazing when you look at the amount of talent we had on that team:

Jalen Richard, Desmond Johnson, Kendrick Hardy, Lampley, Hester, Triplett, Briggs, DJ Thompson, Jamie Collins, Khyri Thornton, Rakeem Nunez, Emmanuel Johnson, Jacorius Cotton, Oliver Bates, Deron Wilson, Kalan Reed......it's absolutely unreal how Elloss Johnson f***ed that up.

We don't talk about that around here. You'll get the conspiracy theorists riled up when it really just boils down to plain old ineptitude.

I was in the band and could have been a better football coach than ELoss. *******

Look at some of the hires eLLLLLLLLLLLLos made for key roles:

Bustle as the OC
Maples as the S&C

Bustle never made it to the first game, and based off the summer "conditioning" program Maples shouldn't have either.

Was actually 28-14. I was there and it was a decent game until they took the starter out. You could tell the coaches quit.

Funny story. I was in a speech class with Peter Boehme and he had to give a persuasive speech. So his entire topic was on why the coaches weren't to blame for our failures that year in football. After giving the speech, our prof asked what the toughest part was for him (in giving the speech). Peter says, "Honestly, the hardest part was that I didn't believe anything that I said."

That could be one of the better stories about that season....along with the one where right after Maples was hired he told people that "weight lifting ain't changed a bit in the 20 years I been away from here"

RE: What the hell happened in 2012?
The things that stand out about that year in my mind:

* QBs couldn't stay healthy, except for Alford, who sucked. My hunch is that the staff changed up the plays and the OL calls and it resulted in chaos.

* Coaching staff generally seemed to be phoning it in.

* So many turnovers. Could also tie back to player confusion.

* EJ was constitutionally incapable of keeping his foot out of his mouth. Instead of saying, "yeah, Collins would start at South Carolina, but maybe as a linebacker," stupid EJ rearranged a few words to make it sound like he was throwing his best player under the bus. Instead of saying, "well, you can't salt away a football game in the 2nd quarter, you've just got to keep on plodding away," he said, in part, "we knew we weren't going to win the game." He's just not suited to being an HC because he's a grumpy, contrarian old man, who'd rather win an argument than a football game, and the players just wouldn't work hard for him. They had zero confidence that listening to him would result in good things.
