Cheerleaders are definitely not going.

RE: Cheerleaders and Sammy: going to Australia?
All the more interesting given this bit featured on http://news.rice.edu/2017/01/30/rice-and...own-under/

Adam Marshall, the New South Wales Government minister for trade, tourism and major events and minister for sport, said he is thrilled to have college football action returning to Sydney in what will be an action-packed afternoon and a boost to the local economy.

“The game between Stanford and Rice will be even bigger, featuring marching bands, cheerleaders, mascots and traditional American stadium food,” Marshall said.

I sat next to Oliver Luck, (who I believe was at the time president of the NFL Europe), at an American Chamber of Commerce Dinner about 20 years ago. If I remember correctly, he alluded that the NFL Europe had to amp up the theater based on what foreign audiences had seen annually in the super bowl (cheerleaders, shows, etc.). The Super Bowl became the 'standard.'

So... if we're not bringing our own, where are the cheerleaders coming from?

Last year, both the Hawaii and Cal cheerleaders went to Sydney, as well as Cal's costumed mascot. The Cal folks were "aiming to make Sydney Bear Country."

It would be quite the embarrassment if Rice had neither cheerleaders nor Sammy!

As for halftime, last year, "a local marching band provided halftime entertainment, supplemented by 30 members of the Hawaii marching band" ... and the fans feasted on 2-foot-long hot dogs and were treated to hour-long beer lines (before the concessioneer ran out).

And in December, this Stanford message board was hoping we would bring our band, as the Stanford band's status/quality post-performance ban was unknown, and these fans apparently feared the worst.

Boston College, one of the lowest budget schools in the P5, brought their full band and cheer squad to Ireland last season. If we aren't willing to do that, it's just another example of how bush league an operations Kaarlgard runs.

As a last resort, there is a former Sammy (aka THIS GUY) who is already going who may be willing to be Sammy.

Now *there's* a major motion picture just waiting to happen.

"C'mon, we need you! Do it for the team!"
"Shucks, I don't know. I hung up my feathers, talons and eyelashes long ago"
"Please? We NEED you! Just one more time for old time's sake?"
(Cue theme from Rocky: 'Gonna Fly Now')
"Oy Mate!! I'll Do It"

The cheerleaders held a fundraiser earlier this year at which Bailiff was kind enough to not only attend, but emcee. He seemed genuinely astonished (direct quote: "I had no idea they just didn't have money for this budget") at how much of the cheerleading budget was funded by donations (especially from a few particularly generous alums) and not by the athletic department. Same song and dance as what the MOB goes through, most likely.

To be fair, this is not just a Karlgaard thing. There has been less than zero support for cheerleading/Sammy/MOB for at least a few athletic administrations.

We have to remember the PV band solicited us for contributions to go to the Macy's Tgiving parade. This Sydney trip has a much shorter fuse....

This is stupid the cheerleaders and Sammy not going. A fund raising campaign should be immediately started. Why are we always so inept?

Such a campaign would have had to start many months ago. Presumably the cheerleaders etc. thought about this as soon as the game in Sydney was announced, considered the circumstances, and made a cogent decision. The fact that there is not already a fundraising campaign suggests that they did just that, and that their decision was either (1) that they did not think it would work, or (2) that they were not really interested in the trip.

The alternative conclusion -- that people are just now thinking about this, and just now realizing fundraising might be needed -- is too discouraging to contemplate.

The game is less than two months away, and aside from this board, I haven't heard any mention of it.

The aforementioned fundraiser was for general funds for cheerleading, but also with the hope that part of the funds raised, combined with theoretical funding from the athletic department, could allow at least part of the squad to go. You're correct in noting that there was not a specific fundraiser for this trip. Again, this all comes to a lack of funding from the athletic department/university.

It's hard to get alums/donors to care about the athletic department when it doesn't seem like the University cares about the athletic department.

Excuse if I missed it, but at what point did we determine that the cheerleaders definitely aren't going? All I've seen is that they had a fundraiser for their general operations.

Post #2 above (and pasted below) is the only thing I've seen that claims that the "cheerleaders at definitely not going":
