Another big fire in London
There is a big fire at the iconic Camden Market in London. It apparently began after the market was closed for the day so I doubt it will cause any fatalities but it certainly will cause some financial damage.

I just wonder about the arson/terrorism possibility. I guess the high rise building that caught fire a month ago wasn't ever connected to terrorism, but it just seems odd to see two high profile fires in the city in less than a month.

That poor city. Of course, when you have an inept mayor like they do, it's par for the course.

A mayor doesn't control this. What's happening is corruption at the regulatory level. City servants are serving themselves. It's also to do with an archaic fire code. The USA really does do a good job of not building fire traps - it's a benefit of our litigious society.

Wait.....let me read that again

No really

I could come to your city and within half an hour of leisurely checking find a fire trap. Just have to find the closest apartment complex or subdivision that's been built since the early 90's. Lightweight construction techniques combined with vinyl siding and all the natural components that used to make up furnishings replaced with synthetics makes for a great bonfire. Trust me....I have the scars to prove it.

In the UK they've slashed 19% of their firefighter slots since 2010 so it's a pretty good bet that their inspection personnel have been slashed as much if not more. You can have the best fire codes in the history of the world and they are useless words on paper if you don't have anyone to enforce them.

The UK fire codes are archaic when compared to the United States but that's primarily because they can be due to the types of construction and age of buildings in the Old World. They fight fire a lot different than we do here as well because of that. In a few decades unless we start to change how we build our structures we'll be fighting fire in a different way that we currently do now because there will be no need to learn how to fight interior fire as the houses are already just about at collapse limits now when the fire department arrives due to building roofing components out of twigs. Just pull up and cool down the rubble to be hauled off.

Is this like the 1666 one?

Maybe not, but the guy certainly doesn't seem to be helping right now either, from what I've seen. But hey, that's just my personal opinion.

Quote:At least three people are confirmed dead, a dozen injured, and five hospitalized -- including a firefighter -- after a five-alarm blaze swept through several floors of a Honolulu high-rise, on Friday.

More than a dozen units at the Marco Polo Apartment Building, along Kapiolani Boulevard, are now heavily damaged, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell declared that fire under control a little after 6:30 p.m., Friday evening.

Fire officials say by midnight the blaze was fully extinguished.

Quote:According to Honolulu Fire Chief Manuel Neves, the blaze broke out on the 26th floor and moved upward eventually reaching the 28th floor of the building.

"It's very difficult even with the equipment that we have to make our way to the floor of the fire and the room of the fire," Chief Neves said in a press conference.

Smoke could be seen exiting Marco Polo from both the Mauka and Makai sides of the tower.

Fire officials says a few times this afternoon, even the firefighters had to be evacuated out of the burning building.

One firefighter was treated and transported for heat exhaustion, but has since been released.

Honolulu Fire told Island News that the building only was equip with sprinklers in the garbage chutes.

High rise residential without sprinklers = fire trap
