RE: 53
Those Little League Champions were from the Southside All Star team that was formed from teams that played at B'ham's Avondale Park. When the national Little League organization began allowing teams with Black players, the southern organizations dropped out and formed the all-white Dixie Youth Baseball Leagues and for many years did not participate in the national Little League competitions.
Those were also the days of "Big 5" dances (Woodlawn, Ramsay,West End, Ensley and Phillips) at the National Guard armory next to Legion Field after games on Friday nights during football season.
Mel Torme' was called "The Velvet Fog" because of his smooth voice. Taft Epstein had his jewelry stores and his brother Louis owned Berman's Store #3 on 18th st. and 4th ave. north (next to the Bohemian Bakery).
