CUSA is developing nicely for Rice
Rice fans,

Congrats on making yet another regional this year after a bumpy start (which happens to us all).
I was looking at the RPI and CUSA has been very stout, as the #6 baseball conference.

Short of the Big 12, CUSA really is becoming a treasure box for the Owls programs. I think its been flying under many peoples radars.
Once Rice can get football and basketball dominant in the conference, CUSA will be the optimal place for Rice to be outside of the P5.
I say that because of the built in recruiting advantages of being CUSA's outpost in Houston.
Ask any coach, and they will tell you that the most desirable jobs across the board are the Top 2-3 jobs in each conference. I believe that Rice is a Top 2-3 CUSA job.
I've watched many a game in Rice Stadium and no other CUSA team has it so good.
Unlike every other conference outside of the Big 12, Rice also has 3 other peer Texas institutions. That's huge for the future.
Anyway, I've grown to become a big CUSA baseball fan and it doesn't get much better than Rice and Southern Miss. Football and Hoops can become just as good. Look at what WKU is doing in both sports.
I know it didn't seem ideal at first but I really think Rice has found a good landing spot. I hope the Texas Quartet can do more together in the future to make this house a home. The brand is strong in Texas.

No.. Not a troll job.
I study networks and college sports are a collection of networks. My feeling is that Rice is clearly one of the Top 2 jobs in CUSA.
That's not a bad thing. If you're going to be on this side of the line (non-P5) then you need to be a kingpin in your conference.
Period.
Rice can actually rise higher in CUSA than all of the other "G5" conferences.
The fact that CUSA is the only fbs conference in the "G5" with 4 Texas teams makes it more ideal than the AAC or the MWC.
The MWC is no better than CUSA right now. MWC football and basketball is horrible.
Soon there will be a lot of good coaches on the market, and Rice would be wise to scoop one up. Whether its Brian Kelly, Kevin Sumlin, whomever.
If Rice schedules smartly OOC, CUSA can be its showcase. Just like Gonzaga in the WCC.
Rice can afford to wait for the Big 12.
Outside of the Big 12, Rice should stay put. No need to move anywhere unless its P5. Rice has what it needs in a compact CUSA West. I think the Owls, Miners, Mean Green, and Roadrunners, have a good thing going.

C-USA has become a decent baseball conference, and I think it's OK in basketball and football, better than people think. But the other schools are too different compared to Rice as universities and don't attract enough fans to Rice games. While I appreciate the opportunity Rice may have in CUSA to become the dominant program in basketball and football, I don't see it happening quite that way with all the JUCO's and non-qualifiers these huge state schools sign, and would prefer the MWC or the AAC (because at least those have more name programs or old rivals). Big 12 would be the ideal fit, it would draw m[/align]uch higher attendance, but Rice hasn't done enough to get invited.

RE: CUSA is developing nicely for Rice
Does it really matter? We won the CUSA football championship in 2013 and did not get much outside recognition from it and then we got stomped by Mississippi State in the bowl game. CUSA is now just a one bid conference in NCAA men's basketball. CUSA is a good baseball conference which is about the only positive. The real negative for Rice is most of the CUSA schools do not draw enough attendance for Rice. Most of them are on the other side of the Mississippi and we are the only American Association of Universities member in the conference. I think Rice will continue to decline unless it can get in a more compatible conference.

We need to get in the AAC. UH, SMU, etc are not going anywhere and the chances are when the BIg 12 breaks up, you might pick up Baylor or TCU. Or both.

I've seen this movie before. Troll alarm went off when you discussed our "peer" schools in Texas (UNT, UTEP, UTSA). No thanks.

Sports-wise they are seemingly peer schools. Academics --- a tad different story.

UNT does have the TAMS program that has steadily trickled a few Rice students every year, my roommate was one and I have met a handful more over the years, so there is that minor connection. The biggest problem is that those Texas schools don't have large athletic fanbases themselves so it doesn't help us as much as it could given the proximity. I feel like we would get more fans if we played Texas State.

I really feel like UTSA and UTEP could become CUSA's UCF/USF with time. So much potential there.
UNT could also replace the Bayou Bucket eventually, as a trophy game.

Why can't CUSA become as good in Football and Basketball as Baseball, with time? CUSA has really been an asset to Rice baseball.

I AGREE 100% that Texas State should become a member of the conference. CUSA can actually cut down on travel expenses by going to 16.

Having Rice, Texas State, UNT, UTSA, and UTEP all together in CUSA would be the best possible situation for Rice... short of a Big 12 invite.

Except that we followed that model for decades.... Rice, SMU, UH and usually one other, only to REPEATEDLY have one of that group leave for 'greener pastures'...

We need to do what is best for Rice.

We can focus on saving $200,000/yr in travel expenses (at the risk of even greater attendance declines)... or on putting 10,000 more butts in the collective seats
