In other words, if the Big East champion was no longer going to have an auto bid to a BCS bowl, and the Big East wasn't going to be paid like a top tier conference ...... what would be the point of making a lateral move for increased travel?

NOT that the MWC made some big power play to reel Boise (and thus SDSU) back in.

Is that wrong?

The future status of the Big East/AAC was a contributing factor, but it was the sweetheart deal that ultimately landed Boise back int the MWC. The deal to get Boise back called for Boise's home football games to be sold separately from the rest of the MWC inventory (hence, all of Boise's home games are on ESPN - while CBSSN gets first pick of non-Boise MWC home games) and for the bonuses payable for national television broadcasts ($300K per national broadcast with an extra $200K kicker for Saturday national broadcasts).

To put my post #36 another way: if the following conference could've received a guarantee from the group negotiating the CFP deal, that the ____ conference (not sure if it would be called the Big East, the American, or something else) would be in the top payout structure and would've had a contractual tie-in with a NY6 bowl (Orange?), then I think you could've very well seen Boise and SDSU as football-only members with the rest of their sports in the Big West.

UConn
Syracuse
Pitt
W Virginia
Cincy
Louisville
S Florida
C Florida?
TCU
Houston?
Boise
San Diego St

Also don't think that Notre Dame signs its 5-game ACC commitment, if the above conference is a "P6" conf. Would have been interesting ...

I'm not saying that Boise didn't get a great deal.

I'm saying that Boise wanted to be in a BCS autobid conference, first and foremost, as did TCU. That is what drove the Big East agreement. When the Big East's autobid died ... I think it greatly deflated the spirit of that marriage.

Would Boise still have left anyway, if the MWC hadn't offered the deal? Maybe. But IMO that's two separate things.
