coaches on hot seat
saw CBS's column with the coaches on the hot seat the most...
1 Brian Kelly, ND
2 Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M
3 Todd Graham, Arizona St
4 Rich Rodriguez, Arizona
5 Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech
6 Paul Haynes, Kent St

these are the only 6 coaches with a 4 or 5. Which makes sense, given that 63 of the 130 coaches in FBS this year are in their first 3 years- or 48/130(37.5%) in the last 2 years.

How about the guy at Kansas? Supposed to be a hotshot recruiter, but hasn't done much?

The KU coach beat Texas last year, so that probably eased the pressure a little.

he's also only entering his 3rd season. He has another bad year this year, and he'll be a 4 or 5 easily next year.

RE: coaches on hot seat
Not much heat in the Big Ten this year. If I had to pick 1 guy in the Big Ten, I would guess Mike Riley at Nebraska would have the warmest seat.

Minnesota, Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers, MD, ILL all have guys in their first 2 years

Iowa, NW, MSU have entrenched guys who will never be fired.

Wisc, Mich, PSU and OSU all went to CFP committee bowls last year.

So that just leaves Riley at Nebraska with pressure to step up.

On average, I wonder how many FBS coaches have been fired over the last five years. Anybody know?

RE: coaches on hot seat
looks like
2016- 11(plus 3 resigned)
2015- 12(plus 2 resigned)
2014- 6(plus 3 resigned)
2013- 8(plus 2 resigned)
2012- 12
so if you include resigned guys as firings(which realistically they are)- you have 59 guys fired. 11.8 per year.

Is it still mostly Kevin Wilson's staff at IU, or did the replacement guy clean house?

It'll take a bowl for Haynes to save his job at Kent State, but they're not getting there with an offense that's never finished higher than 11th in the MAC in his four years. He's probably gone, Carey from NIU too if he doesn't improve after taking a hot program to 5-7 in a few years.

That would suggest that several coaches Dodd rates as a 3 (out of 5) in degree of hotness will also lose their jobs. He lists 15 of these. In order of their tenure at the school, they are:

Mark Whipple, UMass (9 years)
Mark Hudspeth, ULL, (6)
Gus Malzahn, Auburn (4)
Steve Addazio, BC (4)
Brad Lambert, Charlotte (4)
Doug Martin, New Mexico St (4)
Matt Wells, Utah St (4)
Mark Stoops, Kentucky (3)
Jim Mora, UCLA (3)
Derek Mason, Vanderbilt (3)
Lance Leipold, Buffalo (2)
Gary Andersen, Oregon St (2)
Mike Jinks, Bowling Green (1)
Scottie Montgomery, ECU (1)
Barry Odom, Missouri, (1)

NIU needs to be find a solid QB, if that happens NIU (and Carey) will be okay for now. If we don't, Carey is on very thin ice.

I could see Malzahn & Addazio get the boot on that list if they have a bad year. As long as Stoops wins at least 5 games, which he's good enough to do, he will be safe.

I'm surprised Kelly has lasted this long. But for his media created season in 2012 he would have already been gone.

It pains me to say that though because I generally like the guy but he isn't a top level coach.

Media created? They were 12-0 going into the title game. If getting thumped in the NC game is the barometer then there have been plenty of frauds over the years.

don't know that I'd call ND in 2012 media created, but I would call it pretty darn lucky. Only really wins over Stanford and Oklahoma that meant a lot that season. 5 wins by a TD or less(2 in OT). Not exactly a great resume.

RE: coaches on hot seat
Brian Kelly went 10-2 in the 2015 regular season, as well.

Both losses (Clemson and Stanford) were by two points each.

He had a good year that year, not just in 2012.

He is 59-31 (8-5; 8-5; 12-1; 9-4; 8-5; 10-3; 4-8) at ND.

He benefits from being the best coach there since Holtz, record-wise. But, he has alienated the fan base and just went 4-8.

I think that Kelly wants out of ND as much as ND fans want him gone.

I think that 2017 is Kelly's last season at ND, no matter what the record.

New coach for ND next season (2018)?

Bob Stoops in waiting??
