EMU to offer a new major
http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/201...us-studies

Bachelor's degree in religious studies.

Not sure how a bachelor's degree in it helps anyone get a job.

Aren't most religious (Priests, ministers, etc.) taught in either seminaries or in advanced graduate studies such as doctoral studies in divinity?

Dear steve,
The program seems to be aimed at people who might get jobs with the government. They would be advisors on various areas of the world on how religion in those areas may affect policies or programs. I don't think it is for the creation of ministers, etc.

Good luck on that one.

There are some, not many, faith-based jobs in the Federal government.

I can see courses for a 'minor' but not a degree program.

I agree it is NOT a program for ministers, etc. They go to seminaries, divinity schools, etc.

i don't think it's a faith-based govt job like a chaplain. i think it's for people who will work in the state dept, USAID, CIA or military. i don't know how many of those jobs require a degree in religion. i assume whoever started this either did a lot of research and are certain it's a good idea or someone donated some seed money so this was pursued regardless of whether it's a good idea.

I was not thinking of a chaplain especially for departments which have hospitals, etc. like DoD, VA, etc.

I assume they get Priests, ministers, etc. through the local churches or dioceses. I know the Catholic diocese make Priests available as chaplains at local hospitals.

In D.C., I'd assume there are Catholic chaplains at the VAMC, Medstar (where Steve Scalise is), as well as the local Catholic hospital (Georgetown U's hospital) and other hospitals.

The Federal government does have small faith-based offices in some departments. Not exactly sure what they do.

Is there a demand for this education?

It be interesting to understand that we are putting resources to worthwhile endeavors.....

Not sure there is.

Maybe for someone also going for a philosophy degree and will consider theological studies in grad school.

Does remind me of what I think of a lot of liberal arts majors: Good to combine with a teaching degree. Get a Master's degree and teach in a community college?

Great question. According to EMU....."the university's governing body approved creating the major in recognition of religion's increasing diversity in the United States as well as its global strength and prominence in conflicts."

A very simple google search shows clearly that religions 'global strength' (as well as in the US) is declining rapidly, and young people and millennials have very little use for it. Another worthless liberal arts 'major'.

I can see the liberal arts value such as courses in 'Intro to Christianity' or course in comparative religions or courses on Christianity/Judaism/Islam.

Such courses could be part of the humanities requirement in bachelor degrees.

Dear Friends,
One does not study religions, to necessarily become more involved in a particular religion. Like I said earlier, any country like the United States needs some people to help us understand why some countries religions affect their actions or reactions. How many people knew of the Sunni and Shia conflicts in Iraq, before we decided to invade that country?

Actually, you are not saying something different than I said.

I do not know the undergraduate requirements at EMU for things like the humanities, but humanities are an excellent way to study comparative religions or even a specific religion.

I actually took a religion class as a guest student at MSU many years ago.

Lest I be wrong, most people do not fully appreciate the intertwined nature of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abrahamic_religions

I believe there is a real need for well educated people to understand these religions which have billions (3.6B per Wikipedia) of adherents.

EMU's Gen Ed requires two courses in the humanities with different prefixes. The entire gen ed structure can be found here: http://mobilecatalog.emich.edu/#custompage1
The Humanities portion can be found here: http://mobilecatalog.emich.edu/#programdetails1
The new Religious Studies layout is here:

Good stuff.

Earlier this year I was speaking with a Priest at Georgetown University about Islam and some of the tenets it shares with Christianity.

Dialogue between the faiths is getting to be a big 21st century phenomena.

For those who get into studying Judaism, Islam and Christianity, fascinating stuff. All have their roots in Abraham.

For one, the connection between Islam and Christianity is stronger than most Christians know. The Quoran has a chapter on Mary, mother of Jesus. I believe Islam considers Jesus a prophet and Mary a holy woman.
