Volvo is about to become even a more marginal player than they already are. We're going to sell really expensive cars that break down more than typical--many of which cant travel more than 100 miles in real life conditions. Good luck with that. Its New Coke all over again. I guess they are gambling they can corner the segment. They are going to have to build way better cars than they do now to accomplish that.

lol....Interestingly, I actually worked for Coca Cola at the time New Coke was introduced. It was my first job out of college. I can vividly remember a older gentleman (using that term loosely) came up to me outside a store when I pulled up in a marked Coca Cola car and yelled at me to the point that spittle was coming out of his mouth. I literally had to wipe my face off and was concerned that he might get violent. He said we had ruined a tradition that he had enjoyed for years with his family. That was the worst customer confrontation, but I was approached on many occasions about the change. I know that the local Houston Coca Cola Bottler was quietly granted permission to up the carbonation level to bring back some of the original formula's "bite".

The New Coke fiasco may have worked out, but I can tell you there was no "master plan" involved. The biggest evidence is New Coke doesn't exist anymore. I give management credit for realizing their mistake and pivoting pretty quickly. "Coke Classic" was on the shelves by the summer, just a few months after the New Coke introduction.

Bet Volvo doesn't stop cranking out 100,000 road tractors a year and heavy equipment that run on diesel.

That's because that's where their bread and butter is... the car stuff was just a "bonus" they got into which helped improve their tractor/heavy equipment side of the company

Anyone who has owned a relatively recent model Volvo who has put any decent amount of miles on it knows that it might be a good thing that they are getting away from internal combustion motors....they have not done them very well for the last 20 years. Mechanics on the other hand are going to be in tears because they have all of those boat payments to make that Volvo had been floating.

Replacing oil powered cars with coal powered cars. Brilliant!
