Happy birthday Canada!

Rice is not receiving any love inside the US of A. Perhaps time to look North and South for near peer rivals and a new conference and construct! UT (Toronto) and McGill are AAU peers, UNAM and Monterrey Tech are the top schools south of the Border. Add UBuffalo (also AAU) and you have a six team North American juggernaut (TV in three countries) to rival anything the P5 has to offer. Two American schools, two Canadian and two Mexican. (Two divisions for non rev sports) Rice paired with UNAM and Monterrey, Buffalo matched with Toronto and McGill and travel that takes advantage of our airline hub locations!

Wow UNAM has 324,000 students. You might have something there.

Rice already has a football history with both UNAM and Monterrey Tech:

On Oct. 14, 1960, the Owls' "Lightweight" team opened its schedule in Mexico City, where the Pumas won big, 47-0, "before 25,000 firecracker tossing fans in Mexico City's Olympic Stadium."

On Oct. 28, the Rice Lightweights hosted Monterrey Tech, and beat the Rams, 39-12, "before some 200 people in Rice Stadium."

Put the Pumas back on the schedule and let the NCAA be damned. If we end up 6-5 with official games (we are still bowl eligible) and have an exhibition with the UNAM, the gate alone will pay for a whole lot of travel. Stream the game free to the world! If the globe is getting smaller, we, Rice need to take the lead and move towards a more connected continent and planet. Unconventional Wisdom? Think Big!

Toronto (Skydome) and McGill (Olympic Stadium) next on the schedule?

Leverage our advantages, geography, academics and economy! Bust up the NCAA or at least force a reassessment of the status quo. Games (such as our August game against Stanford in Australia, other exhibitions or future non-qualifying wins get us out of the NCAA P5, G5 trap) that show we are global, helps our brand and moves Rice (and Texas- the state, not the super selfish UT Austin microcosm) out of this USA first perception.
