Our record attendance is 25.9k set against New Mexico State however we've been averaging 23-24k for Saturday home football games for years now. Midweek games pull our average down to 21k. Some of the better support numbers that you'll find outside of the AAC. Regardless the primary interest here is for our basketball and all our football has to be is decent (hasn't had a losing season since 2008).

For the B12 that would require expanding to 32,000 for it, however that is quite doable and our program could handle that capacity. For the AAC our present capacity is fine. Again B12 would require UC to move to the AAC for some reason and the B12 being desperate for teams but it's a theoretical target for us.

UC is on an island now, if they go they aren't adding OU unless they have to backfill four or five. Athens is seven hours from the closest current school and is well over an hour from John Glenn Airport with no market except for a few small towns in southern Ohio, your football and basketball teams are fine but nothing remarkable. Your fan support is also fine enough but really only good by MAC standards.

And you need to be committed if you think the Big 12 is a possible target. They'd take any current AAC team before you, and they're not doing that anyways with Houston or UC so why'd they do that with you?

Southern Miss

C-USA. Long-term, the Big12 will disintegrate, and reconstitute with AAC and MWC schools, after losing Texas, Oklahoma, and probably Kansas and WVU too.

Houston, BYU, Cincy, and UConn are the obvious replacements, but in what order, and what criteria? These things don't move fast. Texas or Oklahoma will start, and the other would announce an impending move within a year. This would reverberate all the way down to the Sun Belt.

This is when you're glad C-USA is at 14 members. The Big 12's stature will take a huge hit when UT and OU leave and some would label them 'G6'. How it rebuilds would determine the makeup of every conference under it. And it could be vastly different depending on who announces first.

I didn't know Ohio had received an offer.

We've been in talks on and off for 5 years.

In 2012 we won the Independence Bowl and lost in the Sweet 16 to North Carolina in overtime. That was right as the Big East/AAC was facing their membership crisis. The AAC is primarily interested in our basketball (13,000 seat arena).

Last year when the AAC was looking at a potential raid they met with Ohio's BOD. The response from the Ohio's side was "we want to see how the TV deal goes first". We have a good travel situation in the MAC and don't want to give that up unless its going to make a huge difference.

I'm sure the AAC has had these conversations with BODs of other schools (SoMiss, WKU come to mind) so there isn't really anything special about this.

Very interesting. Can you link me to where you learned this?

PM you later.

No guts to post it publicly?

Underdogs that could make P5:
Buffalo: AAU school in New York. Need new football and basketball arena. All need to start hockey up. If they could build a nice 50000 person on campus stadium and get attendance up they have an outside shot at joining Big Ten.

Rice: Another AAU school. Need to improve basketball similar to what SMu did. Have a shot at Big 12 and PAC 12

UAB: The City of Birmingham is growing like crazy. If UAB could rebrand as Birmingham (similar to Charlotte). Have the city build a nice 50000 person stadium for the blazers and the Birmingham bowl they would be set. On top of that build a new basketball arena. The basketball culture is there just need to get football going. They could have an outside shot to the ACC if schools like Clemson, GA Tech, and FSU start complaining about northern growth and no new southern teams being added.

UNLV: New football stadium and a martlet that fits perfectly for the PAC-12.

Not in the real world.

Good point. The city itself has actually shrunk slightly from 2010 to 2016, and the metro area has grown only slightly, by 1.72%.

The academic snobs at various PAC schools would never accept UNLV.

Most Ohio's season ticket holders are not from SE Ohio anymore and we've set records for season tickets 6-7 years straight. An hour from John Glenn is not very far away. UConn flew into Parkersburg WV which is 30 minutes away. Of course Bobcat teams also take the private plane right out of Athens County airport as it is.

The idea was fans were to list any and all options in this thread, both around the corner and theoretical. I guess you take issue with the way I present my schools options, mostly because you don't have some of those options. That is too bad.

I don't think it's the way that you present the Bobcat's options so much as the fact that you include the Big12 as one of those options.

In practice, the Bobcats don't have a Big12 call around the corner. In theory, they don't either, but the reasons why are more high falutin.

On a list of America's 50 worst cities, Birmingham just landed at #2:

Birmingham is one of the exceptions in both cases, with a 3.3% 10-year population loss and a 0.9% employment decline between 2013 and 2015.

Birmingham is one of the poorest cities in the United States. About 29.2% of the city’s population lives in poverty, roughly double the 14.7% U.S. poverty rate, and the typical household earns just $32,378 a year, over $23,000 below the national median household income."

So I'm not sure branding yourself "Birmingham" is the way to go.

Methinks Kitton has drank too much water out of the Hocking River.

Regardless, the Bobcats joyride is over now, they had a decade to take over the MAC in a weak East division but now Miami is just about back for football. And their basketball is nowhere near good enough to make them attractive for realignment, no one cares about an average team in a one bid conference.

Misunderstanding my comments.

There is no B12 conversation so long as UC is out there dangling as a B12 addition. If that were to change (UC to ACC) then all of the sudden they aren't in front of us for the B12.

Our past president didn't apply to the B12 like NIU did. He had a more conservative approach to realignment.

The new president was formerly the president at Texas Tech. He may want to throw his hat into the ring for the B12 next time around.

The minimum standards for getting into the B12 on the football side moving forward is lower than it used to be. In a B12 without Texas/Oklahoma a 32,000 stadium would probably cut it. Ohio had plans drawn up to expand to 35,000 if another conference came calling back in the 90's.

Profile wise we are already there. Last year Oklahoma State had a base budget of 699 million while our base budget was 814 million. Counting all holdings under management Ohio is at about 1.5 billion and OSU/ISU are around 1.3 billion. The 3 medical schools and research parks in Columbus and Dayton add up for us.

But you're right that its tougher to build a corporate presence in SE Ohio but the media deals mostly are predicated on conference affiliation. We are definitely working on it trying to pitch naming rights to our basketball arena and football stadium.

Definitely UC is ahead of us because they already have a 40,000 seat stadium but if they and UConn were to go to the ACC in a few years that would open things up for us to make a pitch to the B12.

Houston & SMU have the profiles for B12. Tulane is terrible in FB/BB which is going to be an issue for them. Memphis has the athletic chops, the question there is academics. NIU may be viable if they put the facilities in because of proximity to the footprint. There are just not many schools between WVU and the great plains that would be viable for the B12. It's possible all of them will go to the B12.

Tulane.

Nowhere. Independence is a giant risk, but probably the most realistic move if there had to be one.

I didn't see the Lone Star Conference listed which would NOT welcome back the UHouston Coogs as they are Lone Star State's public school equivalent of TCU (stab your neighbors in the back and claw your way into any conference that will have ya!)

lol....perhaps the theme for the next UH-Rice MOB halftime show? 04-cheers

Omaha fan here, not many options. MVC's a longshot and Horizon's a lateral move with increased travel costs, and there's always the WAC if the Summit falls apart, though that's just because they're the NCAA's Island of Misfit Toys. Hockey's where it belongs, so there's no real need to go anywhere else.

I doubt there's any interest involving any other conferences from either side.

I'm sure the WAC would be interested in Omaha.

What are your schools realignment options?
(07-02-2017 08:00 AM)Carolina_Low_Country Wrote:  Here are a few schools that I think could make a P5 conference if they invested a lot of money.

Rice: Thanks for the underdog mention and I'll just add my take on your B12/P12 options.
*If* we were to go P5, I think "today" that P12 and B1G are the two most likely.

The B12 window won't crack open for us again until the league looks to replace the next round of departures (5+ year time frame). At least we know we're on the "short" list of 11(!)

AAC is not very likely right now, either. Our value differentiators are academics, and exposure to the Houston market. AAC and B12 both already have good exposure in Houston.(not to mention the SEC, that opportunity passed by about 20 years ago)

And the ACC has never been even a slim chance option (though some of our fans have suggested it as a good fit)

To be clear, I fully grasp that we are not just underdogs to go P5, but longshot underdogs. But I've seen us beat odds like that before (usually on the field of play) so I dream...

Also, to Domer1978: cool to see the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference mentioned for the first time ever that I'm aware of on this board. Yes, Rice would welcome ND into that conference. Come on down for some great early spring road racing in gorgeous weather.

And to attackcoog:
I'm sure we've been cooking up the halftime script for the renewal of the Bayou Bucket for months. But no way will it hold a candle to the Baylor show #truth
