is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
An article in the paper recently said he was on the last year of his contract with no extension. that can not be good for recruiting.

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
I don't think he's really on the hot seat. The article you are probably referring to was mostly about his contract expiring this year. They have not discussed an extension at this point, but our AD never discusses those publically.

Joey started this program from scratch, calling coaches from the steps of the Mitchell Center asking them to join his staff. Just 9 years ago, we had a bunch of high school guys that couldn't get into any other college program (for the most part). We didn't have a weight room. We didn't have practice fields. We didn't even have coaches offices.

We now have one of the nicest football field houses in the conference. 2 full size practice fields with brand new turf. We'll soon be finished with our Indoor Prectice facility and a stadium is inevitable. His impact has been huge off the field.

On the field, he has the best conference wins over the past couple years. He has also took us to 2 bowl games (and was a play away from a third) in our short tenure in FBS.

He did all this without a real recruiting advantage. We had no history, no stadium, and no generations of alumni (school is barely 50 years old).

I think it's unrealistic to expect much more from him at this point. I think this year will be big, however. Last year's season was tarnished by the worst injury epedimic I've ever seen. He has done a fantastic job building the program, but he now needs to show he can take it to the next level. I still have confidence in him.

I wouldn't necessarily say he's on a hot seat but I don't blame south al brass for not immediately making a move to renegotiate and resign ASAP. As much as he has done (being the first coach, getting the program to its first 2 bowls, and scoring victories over a ranked SDSU & Mississippi state) the fact is he's only managed two 6-7 seasons at best and not gotten USA in serious conference title contention. If he can't make some serious strides this season I couldn't blame Jaguar administration if they wanted to cut him lose and start fresh

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
Timeline as far as I know it:

In 2009 Joey Jones got a 5 year contract, to run the 2009-2013 seasons.
In 2011 he got a contract extension until February 25, 2016.
In 2014 following the it was extended until the end of March 2017.
In 2015 he received an extension of one year until March 2018.

Coach Jones has done a lot of good for our program; he has made some mistakes; but more than that has hit bad luck. Injuries the last two years, especially last year, has been unfortunate. We have some ideas on what caused that and made some changes (more than just hiring a new strength coach). I like Coach Jones and hopes he's able to break through and make more noise in the Sun Belt.

His seat maybe a little warm but win 7 games this year and it gets cooler.

Jones is a very good coach. When he gets all the facilities he needs, he'll turn the corner with USA.

Heck, he went 17-0 in the programs first two seasons of existence, beating established FCS teams like UC-Davis, Nicholls State, and Lamar. And he's already beaten and SEC team, been to two bowl games, and has a win over a Top 25 team. That's impressive despite the 6-6 records and the initial circumstances.

Honestly USA might be 1-6 after the ULM game. You might see him canned after ULM beats USA.
The only true for sure winnable game is Alabama AM.

It's possible. Unlikely, but possible.

I think the one thing most Jag fans want to see this year is for us to win the games we are supposed to win, and maybe a couple we're not. We also want to win our share of the toss up games. A loss to ULM and Idaho/Troy, and I don't see Joey getting the extension.

I didn't realize that schedule first 7 games . I mean ULM is a toss up but back to back money games , Louisiana Tech is good, of Idaho is good and Troy. I mean that's not the easiest way to start a season. ULM Gets a bye week the last week of season. lol I mean if we make a Bowl (I know it's going to be hard) thats great but if we don't just means our season is over.

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
I wouldn't say CJJ's seat is hot but it's damn sure warm. This year he needs to prove he can win at the DI level and winning a bowl game would probably get him a 2-4 year extension to add icing on the cake. Bottom line is, I personally believe he's gone if USA fails to finish with a winning season (and I would definitely be in favor of some "new blood" at the top if that ends up being the case).

If... IF this is CJJ's last season as a USA Jag (or NOT!) I still hope to see his statue near the front entrance of our OCS once his time is done at South Alabama. What he has accomplished up to this point is just absolutely unbelievable. OTOH, the powers that be want a contender every year in every sport and that has been the case for decades.

No timeline yet, but all the plans are in place. The administration is very careful with finances. That's the holdup right now.

Jones does have a lot to hang his hat on. However, I could see the USA admins wanting to search for a higher ceiling than 6-6.

The schedule does him no favors.

Rule of thumb is that you never leave a revenue-sport coach you want to keep into his contract year. This could be interesting if he doesn't re-sign before kickoff.

This is a do or die year for Joey. They'll probably let the season start before any extension happens. He starts hot, the sign something midsession, it goes cold, this could be it for him.

I want Jones to take us to the promise land, but so far he just hasn't shown the consistency needed to turn the corner.

I agree. CJJ was hired to build a competitive DI program from the ground up, which is exactly what he's done - probably in excess of all reasonable initial expectations. I don't remember hearing any admin stating the belief he would take us to the "promised land", just the fact that it'd be sweet, sweet icing on the proverbial cake if he could.

Now USA is ready to kick things into gear to become a serious contender in the G5 landscape and this year (IMO) is his year to audition for the next step, probably the delivery of a winning season is his bar as of this moment.

He's already won any school's audition if they are looking to upgrade or build their program from scratch at ANY level (remember, he also built Birmingham Southern's D-III program from the ground up too) and would probably be quite successful running a consulting agency to help other schools to do the same. Whether he succeeds with USA in its next step or in the former, or another endeavor, CJJ should never have to worry about putting the food on his table from here on out.

I think he's done an overall good job, not to mention that he's a class guy. Class will only get you so far at some levels though, and this is one of them. He needs to kick it up a notch this year and have a winning record in conference. Last year was a bizarre season where we had a couple of the more high profile OOC wins despite being wracked by the injuries, only to have a miserable conference record. This season will be more telling, but either way it goes I believe he still is in a relatively safe position.

His seat is warm and it should be. A minimum of a 4-4 Belt season is a must to keep his job. We've gone 5-11 the last two years 5-3 and 7 wins overall for an extension of more than a year.

The real problem is the way the teams just craters every year as the season progresses.

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
Having a coach in the last year of his contract will hurt in recruiting. If he has a good year and gets the extension after the season is too late. How many kids go elsewhere because other schools will point out it's his last year. Your almost setting him up to fail if you keep him. Better to give him an extension with a low buyout before the season. then if he does well you give him a better contract with a higher buyout as soon as the season is over which would help in recruiting
