R. Bowen Loftin hadn't been at Missouri long before he started working to get the Border War back.

Although his educational background was in engineering, the new Missouri chancellor recognized the value of college athletics and knew renewing the rivalry would mean a lot to his campus. He privately met with Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little about what it would take to get Missouri and Kansas playing each other in sports again. There was a lucrative offer on the table for the Border War to restart in Arrowhead Stadium.

Loftin figured it was a win-win for everyone involved. Yet more than three years since he arrived as Missouri's chancellor, the Border War is still on indefinite hiatus. He doesn't mince words for why it still hasn't happened.

"The problem was a man named Bill Self who made it very clear this wasn't going to happen," Loftin says.

But according to Byrne, the message from Dodds went deeper than that.

“Their AD (DeLoss Dodds) at the time came out and said we will never play Texas A&M again, and they worked along with Baylor and the conference to have no one in the (Big 12) schedule us,” Byrne told AL.com. “There were other forces at work to make sure we didn’t play.”

The Big 12's television rights deals with ESPN and FOX run through 2024-25. The league heavily flirted with expanding in 2016, mainly to capitalize on a clause that would have resulted in significant extra revenue, but ultimately decided to stand pat at 10 members after ESPN and FOX were very against the idea. The one thing holding the Big 12 together, its grant of rights deal, is scheduled to expire in 2025. Interestingly, Big 12 schools had a chance last fall to extend the grant of rights and chose not to.

Multiple sources through the expansion process have mentioned that, for Texas and Oklahoma alone, it is difficult to find support to extend the grant of rights past its expiration in 2025.

Those two schools are thought to have the most conference options when the 13-year, $2.6 billion media rights contract with ESPN and Fox expires in eight years.

"Those grant of rights aren't going to be extended," an official at one of those schools told CBS Sports.

I know bball is important to KU, but I'm not sure why he would have say over whether or not a football game is played.
