CAA Schedule Hurts Basketball Recruiting
“I do believe this is one of the best places to play in the country,” O’Regan said. “We have to be able to educate them to the point that they see you as good a place to play basketball as Pitt or Indiana, or whatever school. The schedule certainly helps ... we don’t sell the CAA as much as we sell the non-conference schedule. Being able to have the challenge of those high-major teams and have the opportunity to beat them [is helpful].”

RE: CAA Schedule Hurts Basketball Recruiting
Just semantics- we all know the deal. The statements are not dissimilar, just phrased differently for effect. O'Regan's quote illustrates the glass ceiling we have as a high mid major. Only a high level OOC can help lessen the stigma of not being P5. You are often judged by the company you keep. Having our name associated with the big boys (girls), with a Gonzaga-like schedule is a must to improve our recruiting pool. He is not interested in getting players that are just talented enough to win the CAA every year- been there done that. He wants to get the caliber of player who can beat the big schools, be it in regular season or the NCAAs.
Relative to the men's side, the CAA WBB is stronger. But it's still a tier down from the P5. And in WBB, that perception is even greater. Even the bottom feeders of the P5 are getting players with stronger high school resumes than what we can routinely recruit. We've gotten transfers from schools that we are already better than (St. Johns, Providence, Syracuse and more recently, UVA and VT). These are girls who were not getting playing time, yet do well at JMU. Imagine if we had a roster full of the players who were starting ahead of our transfer girls. Our coaching has been top notch and they've done a great job coaching the girls up, maximizing their potential and generally having great teamwork. That has allowed us to compete so far. Our fan support is better than a lot of P5 schools already. The only thing left that we can control is a Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime attitude for OOC scheduling. The CAA is what it is; but it's a component of our program that's not a selling point if we have hopes of upgrading the talent pool.

Not only is it not a selling point, but a topic I feel comfortable in stating that our coaches would prefer not to have to address. I'm sure Coach O and Coach Dean really push their conversations with potential JMU athletes to focus on the OOC competition.

OK, let's look at it another way...we COULD be in the AAC...a largely mid-major conference that is completely dominated on the women's side by UConn. Would you like that? I bet not. Your other in-conference opponents would not be much better than what we get now. plus we'd get beaten bloody by UConn twice a season. And I see in another thread people wanting to be in C-USA. REALLY????? Good grief, talk about a lateral arabesque! A conference move did NOTHING for ODU. As far as WBB, I think we're better off where we are and Coach O is doing the right thing. Of course the people talking about wanting to be in C-USA (another mid-major, anyhow) are primarily football people, I think.

I believe it's decisions like this that really hurt recruiting (see story on one prominent player):

I think most of us would be THRILLED to be in the AAC. While I think it unlikely we really "could" go there without a stop at CUSA/MAC/SB, it would be great for all sports, including WBB.
If we were in the AAC:
- more upside for coaches, and a good chance we could retain someone like Kenny
- better recruiting, more players that want to compete with UConn, etc
- more tourney bids by nature of strength of schedule
Would be shocked for us to move to AAC directly without massive conference reshuffling, but that move would be an absolute homerun.

The head coach of the best WBB in the CAA, for the last decade, is quoted as saying he doesn't sell the CAA to recruits.
No need to turn the volume up on that comment and what the CAA has become.

So we basically know that our 2 options to move up were the Sun Belt or CUSA.
Conference RPI in 2016-17:
CAA: #9 (W); #11 (M)
CUSA: #14 (W); #23 (M)
Sun Belt: #19 (W); #13 (M)
ummmmm.......

(Not to mention that if we did move, we would not have the 2016 football championship.)

RE: CAA Schedule Hurts Basketball Recruiting
If our FBS aspirations don't involve pursuing FB-only FBS membership in these coming years, that would be a mistake. FB-only FBS conference alignment seems to be very likely as conferences adjust to the reality of declining media revenue in the G5.
Guess my point is I don't think non-FB sport conference comparisons matter as much. Sure, it would be ideal to put all sports in one league for simplicity's sake, but that's not even happening right now. We have varsity sports with non-CAA affiliate membership competing without significant issue.

For clarity, I wasn't complaining that we haven't pursued FB-only previously. Just that it makes more & more sense moving forward if we can find an agreeable partner conference.

Two interesting posts. With several teams choosing to become FBS independents, it might open the door for a football only FBS league.

The comment that Curry only had one D1 offer has been incorrectly played/distorted into a myth. Yes, he was underrecruited because of his size at that time, but he had other programs after him. He has often stated that William and Mary came after him the hardest. He didn't end up at Davidson because it was his only offer. Yes, in hindsight we would all like to have him as an alumnus, but it's a stretch to assume the JMU staff somehow blew it. Davidson was a well thought out choice for him, not his only option.

Davidson is a well coached team. It was a perfect place for Curry, though I'm not really sure his desire was to stay that close to home, almost too close.

Yeah even prior to Steph Curry Davidson was a good program with a great coach. Probably a bit of fiction to suggest that JMU had a shot at Steph Curry but JMU and Keener decided to pass on him. I think if JMU offers he still ends up at Davidson. The Steph Curry only had one offer story has become like the MJ cut from his high school basketball team story at this point. Both are exaggerated and embellished for Hollywood. When did Steph commit- my guess is he committed early after making some unofficial visits when he technically may have had 1 official offer but he was recruited.
Marcus Camby was an example back when Lefty was coach of a player that JMU was a finalist for (along with UConn and Umass I believe) that had they gotten him the course of history for JMU MBB would have forever been changed.

Before him was Moses Malone while at Maryland. Lefty was in on so many big names and got his fair share of them. Take the Davison coach and Lefty, mix them together, and you have coach K..

Let me add to your theory... where did Lefty coach before Muuurland??? That's right, Davidson and Terry Holland was his top assistant.
