Projected Men's Basketball Finish
1. MT I know it looks like a homer pick but I think we will repeat again this season. We will, however, lose more than one conference game. Brandon Walters will be huge for us this season and so will Nick King. Giddy Potts will have his best season this year. Kermit's tough defensive playing teams continue to stifle the conference It will be tougher this season but we will come out on top

2. UAB UAB will be in the mix to the very end. Nick Norton will return to shore up the PG duties and it will be Cokley and Lee's final season so they should be better. Eshan will have another year under his belt.

3. Marshall Marshall will add a little more size to this year's team to go with Elmore which will make them more dangerous and not so one dimensional.

4. WKU Added a lot of "stars" to their roster but they will be young and not well coached. I'm not buying the hype this year for WKU, maybe next year.

5. ODU Will be a tough defensive team like MT but will still be plagued with very little offense. They loss several guys to graduation but our gaining a few good guys coming in. ODU reminds of Kermit Davis team's of the early 2000's. Tough defense but atrocious offense. Maybe Jeff will be able to turn things around like Kermit did.

6. La Tech Has a talented roster and should be able to play with anyone on a given night but will drop a few too many games to keep them in contention.

7. UTEP Loss a few guards to graduation but still have some big men.

8. North Texas Should be much improved in the post Benford era.

9. Charlotte Mark Price needs to get things rolling at Charlotte

10. Rice Devastated by loss of players and coach, Starting from scratch again.

11. UTSA
12. Southern MIss

Of course picking Middle is a homer pick. To say other wise all you have to do is read your weakness for other teams....

new players or lack of experience.

Then you list that as two out of three of Middle's biggest strengths

You list a player that avg 4ppg and one that did not ply as " Brandon Walters will be huge for us this season and so will Nick King". Other than that you list Giddy Potts & Middle's defense.

You failed to address the two elephants in the room? Or should I say, missing?

You speak as if picking us first is some kind of outlandish projection. We have represented the league in the NCAA tournament the last two seasons. I don't have to state that we loss Reggie and Jacorey everyone knows that already. Neither Brandon Walters or Nick King are new or inexperienced players. Nick has played several years of D1 basketball. Last year he had a lung infection and missed several games at Alabama. If you think Brandon did not play you must have not watched us in the NCAA tournament.

These are my projections feel free to make your own projection.

I project, with a ton of confidence, that we are a one bid league. We're never going to overcome the bottom half of the league's performance.

The kid averaged 11 mpg no matter how he played in the NCAA Tourney you seem to be basing your whole opinion on 2 games. Let me tell you a quick story....

it's 2013 an a kid (6'10 FR) that played 14 mpg all season averaging close to the same in ppg as this Walters kid did last year. The team he played made the NCAA tourney and played Kansas the #1 seed in the tourney. The kid came out of that game scoring 11 points, against one of the best centers that year.

Sometimes those stats don't carry over.

Nick King..anything that he's showed to be "special" in other than playing for Memphis and Bama?

You're the one that put those two players as the reason Middle will win CUSA. I just called you out for the homer pick it was. As I said you failed to give other schools with transfers or players sitting out last year the same benefit.

Didn't see anyone close to replacing Upshaw and Williams on Middle's bench, they will probably end up being close to the top this year also in CUSA but losing your two best players and scorers, plus CUSA MVP, is going to be tough to replace

It's going to be impossible for anybody to predict where North Texas will finish this season. Grant McCasland has almost completely gutted the roster and brought in new players. It's going to be a different ball club, for better or for worse. And i dont see how it could get much worse.

I feel like you have Marshall a little bit underrated here. :)

If Iran Bennett gets eligible this summer to start at center to go with our establish D'Antoni Pick-and-Option perimeter offense including Elmore, I think Marshall could be a real contender for the CUSA basketball championship this year. I think we'll have some depth with the inside game this year, which has been the achelles heel for us recently.

RE: Projected Men's Basketball Finish
What YG doesn't understand about Walters is his rapid progression last year. He will be a dominant presence down low in the league but only if he can stay out of foul trouble. His tendency for unnecessary fouls could limit his production.

Last year at this time I knew we were going to be really good if the team came together. They did. This year I have no idea how good they can be. We will be near the top because the players and experience are there in spite of two big losses. Just not sure how good until I see them on the court a few times or if they are going to be capable of a three peat.

RE: Projected Men's Basketball Finish
If you all thought Marshall was fast last year, you haven't seen anything yet. Those that go to practice are saying this team doesn't even compare to the team speed that the Herd possessed last year.

We have lost 41% of our production with the graduation of Ryan Taylor, Austin Loop and Stevie Browning. But with the additions of Jarrod West, Jannson Williams (Redshirt 2016-17), Rondale Watson (Wake transfer sat out 2016-17), Darius George (Most likely a Redshirt, but not a given), Iran Bennett (NCAA still has to rule on him) and Tanner Robinette (Will set out 2017-18) the Herd will be bigger, faster and stronger.

Those at practice say that the ball is a blur. No one on the team is holding on to the ball more than a half second when they get in a set to run the ball. Most of practices 90% have been defensive oriented. And Jarrod West, Rondale Watson, Jannson Williams and Darius George are ball hawks. For most of the summer they have been working on full court press and half court traps.

With that said I think we will be a good team this year but next year is when they put it all together.

My order for this year:
UAB
Marshall/Middle
Middle/Marshall
ODU
WKU
LA Tech
Charlotte
North Texas
UTEP
Southern Miss
UTSA
Rice
FIU/FAU
FAU/FIU

UAB With Lee and and Cokley in along with Norton back at PG, Ive gotta give the edge to UAB.

UTEP Tim Floyd is the most overrated coach in America except for maybe ECUs Jeff Lebo. The same with Charlotte, ehat ever it is he must rub student athletes the wrong way, they always transfer on him.

Marshall/Middle I believe that Marshall and Middle will be neck and neck all year and it will probably come down to who wins the 2nd game of the year on who gets second and who slides to third.

ODU is ODU or should I say that Jeff Jones is Jeff Jones. He will bring your shooting down and beat you ugly, real ugly. I absolutely hate this style of play and would probably enjoy going to the dentist more.

WKU, well I should have been born in Missouri. For me to believe in the hype that WKU is trying to sell, you have to "Show Me".

LA Tech, Tech is a mystery to me. This placement was more like throwing it up against the wall and see if it sticks.

Charlotte I don't know if I have Charlotte to high or to low. Mike Price seems to be a decent coach but he can't keep the good kids he recruits from Curran Scott to Quentin Jackson.

Southern Miss like LA Tech is a mystery. Even riddle with sanctions there is enough bottom of the bottom feeders to keep them out of the bottom four.

UTSA brought in a new coach with new energy but its still not enough, not this year anyway.

Rice with the loss of Mike Rhodes and the transfer of 8 players I don't see how they can get above this spot.

FAU/FIU I'm sorry but it can't get much lower than these two programs. This year along combined they are bringing in 15 new player, 12 of which are JuCo's. Both Anthony Evans and Michael Curry should have been fired when the buzzer sounded for their last regular season game.

I fully understand that he progressed during the season. I also fully understand 90+% of the time he had the CUSA POY or probably the POY any other year playing beside him.

It makes a difference. It also makes a difference in asking a kid to play a small role...then take over that larger role.

Same thing for the guards....losing those inside threats hurts guard play. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Giddy Potts's numbers to look worse than last year. I don't think they fall much but it wouldn't surprise me to see a drop instead of "the best season he had". Same goes for Dixon ...lot easier moving and doing your thing with basically two POY's inside.

I'm just saying his pick was a "homer pick" . Something he said it wasn't.

He also talked about Western being too young and inexperience...

Western will have 3 Sr players and a Jr with two years of NCAA experience.

Jr. Lamonte Bearden went to two NCAA Tourneys playing for Buffalo

Sr. Dwight Coleby went to two NCAA Tourneys playing for Ole Miss and Kansas

Sr. Darius Thompson went to three NCAA Tourneys playing for Tenn & Virginia

Sr. Justin Johnson a 3 year starter, 2nd team all conference 14.5ppg & 9.5rebs

So like I said other schools have transfers and players that sit out last year.

The one thing he did point out about Western...coaching. Till I see something better than last year. I wouldn't picked Western higher.

Gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that WKU will struggle in OOC but by the time CUSA play rolls around, their athletics will have a bit of chemistry and just out-ball everyone else. My projected order with almost 0 thought:

1. WKU
2. UAB
3. Marshall
4. MTSU
5. ODU
6. LT
7. UTEP
8. Charlotte
9. UTSA
10. USM
11. Rice
12. NT
13/14. F_U

It would actually be pretty cool to have a poll for this. A first place vote counts as 14 points, 2nd place is 13, and so on all the way down and see what this board thinks. I think I might actually do this when it gets closer to the season, what do you all think? Or should I just do it now?

UTSA finished 9th last year (14-19, 8-10) in Coach Henson's first season, which was a huge improvement from our previous season (5-27, 3-14). We're not finishing 9th again in his second season at the helm. Sorry. And we're definitely not regressing to 10th or 11th. That's my only 2 cents on this thread.

I think you have things generally right. There could be some shift in your top 4, but I think those are the right 4.

Giddy Potts will make MTSU a contender. A talented 4 year point guard is so huge. One with the experience he has is downright rare. The frog added a nice transfer or two to go with his returning players. A brutal non-conference schedule will prepare them.

The sheer quantity and quality of talent that WKU has added is unbelievable. Uncharted waters and hard to say how good we will be but I am fairly certain we will be better than last year. I've seen Mitchell Robinson play. He is raw, but he is a special, special talent. He threw down a behind the back slam dunk that is maybe the best in game dunk I have ever seen. Oh and he shoots threes pretty well too. Beardon is probably the most important add. A former 4 star point guard that has actually led a division 1 team to the tournament. More talent, depth and athleticsm that we have had in a while.

Feels like Marshall and UAB have been building to this a little bit. I could see either actually winning it if MTSU's losses hurt them more than expected or if WKU does not quite gel this season.

Can't wait to tip off and see what happens.
