RE: 66
That 1966 LA Tech game was a late addition to the Bama schedule because GA Tech under Bobby Dodd had cancelled their game as part of quitting the SEC and the rancor that existed between the schools after the Darwin Holt - Chick Granning incident. The previous year game saw Coach Bryant wear a football helmet when he walked onto Grant Field suggesting a fear of bottle throwing from the stands.
Gov. George Wallace ordered Bama to only play an all white team and Tech was the only / best one they could add that late. The USC game with Sam Cunningham was 3 seasons later. The game was expected to be a "cake walk" Bama win by about 60 points, but Tech had a freshman starter at QB named Terry Bradshaw and a couple of other future NFL players. SURPRISE!! Bama won but Bradshaw controlled the game without being able to score but one TD (37-7).
It was the start of "The Missing Ring" season when Bama had a perfect season but was not the NC which was Notre Dame which had played for a tie with Mich State. (SI magazine's cover story of that game was titled "Tie one for the Gipper")
