Exclamation Football at WSU
Lots of knowledgeable football fans on this board who are keenly aware of their respective university's football budget. If you were charged with the task of restarting football at Wichita State and eventually turning it into a middle-of-the-pack AAC performer, how much money would you need? How big of a stadium? What's a realistic timeline? Can the process be fast-tracked?

WSU is explicitly a non-football member of the AAC. It was a condition of joining the AAC. Presidents do not want WSU to use the AAC as a springboard for a football program because it would make WSU a very valuable SEC or Big 12 candidate in a matter of a few years.

Fast tracked yes seen Charlotte.

You need a 50000 seat stadium similar to TCU. Probably going to cost $600 million to get the program up to standards. new stadium, practice facility, expensive coach to grow program, money to buy home games. I would recommend building the stadium and facilities and hiring a coach. Then do what Liberty did, go independent and buy a bunch of games. At which point you start winning and building a program you can join the American.

600 is a big number. I haven't seen an estimate quite that high.

The University of Kansas would sooner have every member of the Kansas Board of Regents murdered than they would allow Wichita State to be Big 12 members. You really cannot contemplate how much they hate us and are afraid of that very scenario. We could be national champions in football and other sports and KU would find some way to keep us out of the Big 12. It's all they have, and they defend it zealously.

Before Wichita adds football we need to have an existing member like UCONN go ahead and add football first. They've earned it. It's their turn.

Many might laugh… but a rebuilding and desperate B12 without Kansas would seriously consider WSU as a replacement even with an infant football program—which would likely be on Kansas’ level by then. Shock is partially right: “Presidents do not want WSU to use the AAC as a springboard for a football program because it would make WSU a... Big 12 candidate in a matter of a few years.” However, there is no way the SEC would add WSU when it could add either Kansas or Kansas St in my opinion….

My advice... Do not do it.

College Football, outside the "Power" Conferences, is an endangered species. For most of us, it will not be tenable over the next decade...either we will move down or have to disband it.

If Wichita State wastes money trying to restart football, administrators should be investigated for fiscal malfeasance.

Besides which, the State of Kansas, thanks to your brilliant Governor, is in such financial straits that there is no more money for such extravagance.

Never happen. There's nowhere else for Kansas to go. Basketball alone won't earn them a Big 10 invite, and their football is Division 2 abysmal. They're not even marginally a fit for any other conference.

When the Big 12 dies, so will the University of Kansas's athletics.

You're right. The SEC is a stretch. The football program would have to be built right, and fast. WSU has some high profile alums, including bill parcells and mike McCarthy[edit: Not mike, got WSU confused with the chiefs], but I would be surprised if either got involved.

But the Big 12 could be possible.

I strongly disagree with you:

Two sources have told The World-Herald that the Big Ten has done prior 'homework' on Oklahoma, Kansas and Vanderbilt among other schools who might some day be expansion targets. The Big 12 grant-of-rights deal didn’t stop a look-see for OU and KU.”

WSU is welcome to start FCS football and put it in the MVFC since the AAC only sponsors FBS football...other than that, no thanks, we're good here.

RE: Football at WSU
The only reason Wichita was even thinking about football in the first place was because they thought it would be a requirement to get into a better hoops league. Well, that problem got resolved without spending one thin dime on football, so they're certainly not going to fool with it now. Plus as others have said, AAC invite didn't include football, anyway. So at this point, there really isn't anyone interested in pursuing the idea.

I suppose that if the Koch Bros. drop $500m in John Bardo's lap and say "We want a football team. Make it happen." then yeah everyone would probably reevaluate the situation. Until then...
