RE: So who goes to the Summit?
Is this enough for Summit football?

Eastern Washington
Idaho
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota St
North Dakota
South Dakota St
South Dakota
New Mexico St (FB Only)

Maybe it won't work at first.

Have Idaho and NMSU help the Montana's and NDSU reclassify while the others get their sh!t together.

RE: So who goes to the Summit?
The conference invite to FBS rule is effectively out the window now that Liberty is moving on its own, but to be a FBS conference for NCAA governance purposes, eight full members playing football in the conference are required.

There would be no real reason for New Mexico State to be a football only member in such a conference as the distance from UND to Idaho isn't that much less than it is from UND to NMSU.

Still think Idaho temporarily goes FCS.

Not sure that NMSU would be a part of it. Wichita St and Mo St would probably be affiliate football members for a time. If NMSU comes aboard, they will probably insist on Sam Houston St, Lamar and maybe S F Austin.

Denver and Omaha would be non-football members, provided they don't jump.

The Dakotas, Montanas and Idaho are not wanted elsewhere, so they make their own home sweet home.

Eastern Washington is desperately trying to raise funds for at least a 15 k seat stadium expansion. Why are they trying so hard ? If they are staying FCS, they are really knocking themselves out over funding that can take years. What's the rush?

USD is basically Idaho's twin, as both have domes that housed nearly their entire athletic departments. But USD completed their own attached arena last year and now has funding to do a renovation of their dome for more than 15k seating. Even geographically they have similarities, as USD is remote from most of SD and closer to an Iowa metro than Sioux Falls. Somehow USD has wealthy alumni. SDSU not so much, but billionaire Dennys Sanford has been throwing his money out for all three southernmost Dakota schools.

RE: So who goes to the Summit?
True.

Mo State, IL State and SIU seemed to be rushing to 15k a few years ago in the event they want/need an FBS invite.

With UMass, Liberty and Army all sitting out east it could make sense for JMU/Delaware to move on up.

The way things are today:

P5 64 teams
G5 60 teams
Indy 6 teams (BYU, NMSU, ND, Army, Liberty, UMass)

In the future:

P8: 108 teams
non-P 40 teams

The Montana's and New Mexico State's are at a long term recruiting disadvantage due to location and while in FBS are essentially cut out from major bowl access.

Not only the visiting side sucks, but the whole stadium. But 9k is fine for FCS.

The bowl access if I were Summit Commissioner

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl- MWC vs Summit
Apple bowl, Seattle - Summit vs Pac12 ( not likely, but Wash St or Oregon St)
Polaris Bowl, Minneapolis - Summit vs MAC
Frisco Bowl, Frisco, TX - Summit vs CUSA (CUSA has more Texas schools than the Belt)[/i]

Northern Colorado if they want to sponsor football.

UMKC if they just want to maintain the status quo.

Maybe some Minnesota D2s once IPFW leaves down the road to solidify the footprint and make the hockey schools happy.

The odds of any school from Minnesota moving up is 0-to-infinity.

There hasn't been a peep out of DII schools about moving up. Often there is some statement to the press that a DI move is being considered. All this points to DI replacements, which would come from the Big Sky.

If IUPUI moves, IPFW, W Illinois and possibly Oral Roberts will be scrambling, as they don't want to be an extension of a Dakota/Montana league. Why hasn't the Summit invited a DII years ago? Answer: because there was always a plan for western expansion and UND moving to the Summit was just the first part of it.

RE: So who goes to the Summit?
I think the first choice is UMKC, second choice is Northern Colorado. If the league lost further membership and got desperate, I could see them trying to lure in Utah Valley or SIU-Edwardsville, but they might look at high-level D2 schools before going with SIUE. No reason to go beyond 10 at this point unless you're starting a football championship.

What would be the advantage of Montana schools leaving Big Sky?

I didn't know the Slummit was expanding. They'll still have enough schools if they lose one right? 1 out of 8 for an NCAA bid is better than 1 out of 10 for the odds

Academics and similar research schools. The NoDak schools blow the doors of the Montanas for total attendance and championships.

All of them are tired of being constrained by former teachers colleges and commuter schools.

Ask WVU why they joined the Big 12. It was more than money. The best conferences are academic consortium. The Big Sky's academics are a joke.

With Idaho and EWU, its no worse travel. Eastern Montana would be the central part of a new Summit. Billings could host tournaments, and Billings is where Montana growth is. Bozeman is growing, but Missoula is like a Portland leper colony: all new businesses stay clear of it.

IPFW, W Illinois and possibly Oral Roberts are already banging down doors. It's stable if you grew up in a toxic family.

But if it's Grand Canyon who leaves the WAC would be vulnerable to lose UMKC and New Mexico St to the Slummit. I could see it both ways...right now the WAC is stronger, but...maybe Chicago St survives simply because one of the WAC or Slummit needs them to have enough eligible teams.

GCU does not have an offer. IUPUI does.

If ORU leaves the Summit, why would UMKC join? UMKC grew tired of the Dakota-centric nature of the Summit before UND joined.

Tulsa is closer mileage to the Dakota schools than the University of Montana is. Another fantasy thread.

Does ORU bus anywhere in the Summit? Or do they fly Everywhere? Sometimes population densities force a team to make a conference change. The WAC actually makes sense for ORU, which uses athletics as advertising for new students.
