FB and BB goals
It is obvious that we will not be P5 for some time if ever. Should we give up? NO!

In FB our goal should be to be like Boise State and in BB to be like Gonzaga.

Both are relevant on the national stage.

If we reach your goals doss UC would be immediately invited to a p5 conference immediately. We do not have the downsides those schools have. UC is a solid credible public institution with above average research. Here's to keeping the boat rowing!

I doubt it results in an invite. With great coaches in place and an remodeled facilities there is no reason we can not excel in both sports. We have been a top 5 program in both sports. We just need to do it consistently and both at the same time.

Well, at least it wasn't something along the lines of representing a letter, holding a fibrous cord, etc.

Unarguably a top 10 bball and top 25 fb program year after year for 10+ years with our school would be guaranteed. Only osu and Florida remind me of that from 2005-2010. Granted their fball and academics are elite for public institutions. With Top 25 fball, top 10 bball, top 150 school for 5+ years I'd be very surprised if we weren't invited with 3 years

RE: FB and BB goals
BB goals are easy. We're effectively back in the CUSA with a strong basketball program. We remember what that looks like right?

I think the goals should be for the next 10 years to look something like 92-01. Piling up wins, bringing in talent, strong home court advantage and taking our chances in March.

FBall is harder because we haven't really had success at a "lower" level. I would like to be a top tier team in the AAC that consistently competes for the league championship.

OSU has accomplished that in FB, that is for sure.

Top 10 for basketball? OSU has been really good for two brief periods in the last 20 years- other than that they are as often outside the top 25 as in.

And regarding academics being "elite" for a public school. Seriously that is gilding the lily a bit. I would say OSU is competitive to get into for sure, but definitely not elite. I understand they may get high numbers in the school "rankings" - but those rankings are driven by things like research, funding and a few elite graduate programs the majority of students never know exist, much less benefit from. For the typical bachelors degree program student, I would say OSU is "above average".

Elite is a tough word to quantify but for a discussion about public universities OSU is at least very very good. By most metrics OSU is ranked between #10-15 for public undergraduate universities. UC typically falls in the upper half of the #75-100 bracket.

Good catch. I call elite public universities Cal-Berkeley, Michigan and Virginia. OSU is probably in that next tier; very good still but in my mind, not elite.

Someone better remind the ACC that Louisville isn't elite academically. Oh, and remind the B12 that WVU is in the same boat.

My only point (as we've bantered about for many of these 1,776 pages): UC measures up to the P5 in terms of academics, research, endowment, and enrollment. Basketball/football performance has also been very good for more than a decade; ranked many of those years. Facilities are now catching up. But a P5 conference must have a need to expand. That's the pathway UofL and WVU followed. When that happens, everyone should like Cincy's chances.

Lack of performance meant nothing to B10 as Rotgers sucked and still sucks in FB and BB.

UC should strive to be the best G5 in both while understanding it may never result in an invite.

Well yeah cal Berkeley is on the level if not better than many Ivy League schools and Stanford. Michigan competes with notre dame and northwestern. Virginia and North Carolina are elite top 25 US schools. Then I'd say the next tier is right under elite and still above very good. You have to remember many elite students don't want to go to a small private school and often times will choose (Half Big Ten, Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech etc.)

I reside in the Milford School district. Yesterday I received a post card from Milford Schools sharing their #26 ranking in the state in the USN&WR ranking. They noted their class valedictorian was going to "The Ohio State University" to study chemistry (how it was specifically stated on the card).

I guess Milford considers OSU elite.

Basketball goals are easy.

Win this rinky-dink 2 bid conference and/or conference tourney. (that just got a little tougher with the Shockers joining)

Make it to the Sweet 16 (preferably beyond, but I'll take baby steps)

Beat Eggsavier more than 3 times out of 10 tries. (That stat should be reversed, but at this point I would take an even .500)

Football goals are a little tougher because the deck is stacked against them more than it is in basketball. But that don't mean we have to settle for the product Tubs rolled out.

RE: FB and BB goals
I have to agree with Doss that UC should strive to be nationally relevant in both football and basketball. We were nationally relevant in football from 2007-2012 (maybe even 2013) but have fallen off a bit. Despite making the tournament 7 years in a row we are not nationally relevant in basketball. Probably going to need a conference championship or two and go deeper in the tournament for a few years. Also, as someone else pointed out we need to be beating X on the regular.

We need to keep Fickell around for more than 3 years. Some of that is out of our control, but if Urban decides he wants to coach until he is 60 and we can afford to give Fickell raises as he earns them, we might be able to keep him for a while.

Here's how I'd rank publics:

Tier 1
Cal Berkley
Michigan
North Carolina

Tier 2
Georgia Tech
Illinois
Purdue
Texas
UCLA
UCSD
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin

Tier 3
Florida
Maryland
Minnesota
Ohio State
Penn State
Pitt
Texas A&M
William & Mary (only for undergrad)

Tier 4
Arizona
Colorado
Georgia
Indiana
Michigan State
NC State
Rutgers
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara
Utah
Virginia Tech

Cincinnati would be in the next group, but it's a much bigger group.
