MT announces Meharry Medical College Partnership
Despite the Largest Undergrad enrollment in Tennessee (other than the Big Orange03-puke) like most CUSA brethren we struggle for Respect 03-banghead. Today, MT & Meharry Medical College announced a joint venture for MT undergrads to enroll at Meharry in Nashville for B.S./M.D combo. Meharry is oldest, historically black medical & dental school in the south. While we are not acquiring Meharry as a school of medicine under the MT Umbrella, this is a big deal for endowment and overall promotion. I know UAB has its own medical school, and a few other members may boast of professional degree attractions. So, who else has a Professional school of Medicine, Law, Engineering, Dentistry, etc.?

Just about everyone but us and the community college to the north.

Thanks again Geier!

Not sure about others, but FIU and FAU each have independant medical schools (allopathic/MD degree), and engineering schools. FIU also has a law school. Neither have dental schools.

Most universities in this conference (Rice included) confer Master's and Doctoral degrees, I think.

Rice has a similar BS/MD program with Baylor Medical School (which isn't really affiliated with Baylor). Rice was actually considering buying Baylor Med a couple years ago, but $h!T hit the fan. Probably one of our top 3 non-athletic fails in Rice's history.

Middle Tennessee now has 12 doctoral programs, but the problem is and always has been no law, med, or other professional degree programs. It greatly effects a number of things including our standing in the national rankings, fundraising and grant receipts.

Most rankings don't just look at undergrad and masters level but all graduate programs. We could have one of the most kick ass academic undergrad and masters programs but will always be ranked below schools with professional doctoral level degree programs. Hell, even ETSU has a freaking med school.

MT & Meharry Medical partnership is outstanding news. It is a natural strategic fit for both.

Hopefully leads to a medical school down the road. The midstate needs a public option.

Just like for us, I doubt the Vandy/UTs of the world will allow you to have one. They'll block it in legislature just like U.K./UL has been doing for decades for us. Won't let us get med/law.

Which really gets my blood boiling, since the biggest physician shortage in KY is in the western part of the state. I just can't wrap my head around WKU caving in and doing a "joint" (it's not joint) program with U.K. In BG. It basically eliminates any possibility we can get one of our own in the future.

It was ransdell finally trying to get his last stamp before he left. I think it's a terrible idea to do a joint venture.

Congrats MT! The city of Charlotte is one of the largest metro areas in the U.S. without a med school. Many Charlotte alumni would love to see us pursue a med school but our current chancellor seems uninterested in the effort or doing anything that would upset his friends in Chapel Hill.

Marshall has a Medical School; School of Pharmacy and a College of Engineering in Huntington.

Isn't the Bowling Green medical program under the direction of the University of Kentucky? I know of a couple of public universities that have satellite programs in urban areas.

There is a UTHSC campus in Nashville already. And Memphis and Knoxville are only short drives away

I presume we didn't buy the former location of the Middle Tennessee Medical Center just for the property. Could certainly turn that into a med school and it's right there next to campus.

A check of the UTHSC website suggest the only programs that the Orange Med School have in Nashville are their residency programs at St. Thomas and an affiliation in pharmacy. I don't believe UT medical or dental students are in the mid-state prior to graduation. Regarding Memphis and Knoxville being a "short drive away":lmfao: When's the last time you made that 3+ (or 4) hour commute? I don't want to go all Chamber of Commerce on you; but nobody picks Memphis or Knoxville over Nashville, if they have a choice.04-chairshot

Being that St Thomas Rutherford carries the old MTMC banner I don't see that property being anything medical related. Maybe I'm wrong.

The point of my post was that if the state decided that Nashville needed a full scale public med school to go along with the two other med schools already in the city, they'd likely just expand UTHSC vs starting something from scratch under the MTSU banner.

Also, believe it or not, there are people who prefer Memphis and Knoxville to Nashville. And for the med student taking on tens of thousands in debt, the lower cost of living is very attractive.
