Horizon has offered an unnamed school... GCU?
This article thinks it is GCU. Or Fort Wayne or SIU-E. The new member must have baseball, meaning no Robert Morris or IUPUI.

If its SIU-E or Fort Wayne, goodbye UMKC

If they actually do go it would be astoundingly stupid. You will play the same quality/lesser basketball but across the country. Adding major geographical outliers like that is how you kill a conference. I see no possible upside.

Yeah, dont get how this helps GCU at all except a little more conference stability

The Horizon isn't exactly stable at the moment either with 9 schools and the Valley possibly expanding more in the future. Equally as stable as the WAC, possibly even less so.

Well, if the WAC drops to 7 members, I hope Seattle U goes hard for the Big Skys 12th opening

Would they even be interested in non-football? Plus the WAC would be at 8 in 2018 if a school left. The schedules are already made, nobody is moving this year.

RE: Horizon has offered an unnamed school... GCU?
I think it's almost certainly GCU.

No board meetings on the docket for either the SIU or Purdue systems. GCU money has made it very clear they want to move out of the WAC. There is no chance a hyphenated midwest school in a small town with 1/3rd the budget, no success or prospects of success at a high level in Basketball, and small crowds can possibly compete with the presentation team GCU would put up. Only GCU provides the high profile big splash to make up for the loss of Valparaiso.

RMU was the compromise "pre-GCU" choice to get to 10 between the factions that wanted to stay very local and the factions that wanted to go big and improve RPI (Colangelo hinted at this concept, LeCrone has stated it for a few years, and several schools like UIC and UMW are firmly in the "big splash" camp with the commissioner). That RMU was bypassed tells me they went straight to phase two, which is GCU. I can't see the big splash group accepting Fort Wayne or SIUE, as they know the keep it local camp might very well stop the big splash phase two.

I'm surprised it happened this quickly. But then again the big names and big money behind GCU are not amateurs, making it a mismatch for the hyphenated public schools on shoestring budgets.

This is no more weird than the Big West taking travel subsidies from Boise State for a Big Splash invite.

If it is GCU, you have to believe Carruthers and Moccia are on the phone to LeCrone as we speak. It would not shock me to see NMSU and the Horizon talks being revived.

Maybe, maybe not. But when UND leaves after this year, they will be at an odd number in all sports. With no football schools to add, having a 12th school could make OLY better. And Seattle is a perfect location with tons of Big Sky alumni. They show up when their school plays at SU. If I remember correctly, Big Sky had issues with uneven OLY members, which was part of the reason Idaho was added way before football

Could it be UMKC themselves?

Edit: No mention of KC and no baseball either.

Horizon will not offer a out west for profit school with GCU's academic rating to their conference. That's absurd. Then again, I wouldn't have dreamed Paul Weir would be coaching at UNM after one season at NMSU.

They already vetted them and probably gave them an offer. Kind of looks like it might happen. It would be a hilariously bad move though.

The mechanics make it impossible for SIUE or PFW to move quickly.

Look at what Murray State had to line up wit increased student fees and pre-positioning institutional funds for a athletic department loan to cover the first two years of a move. They had to have a board meeting and lots of internal work to get it done. None of that has happened at SIUE or PFW. And they have much less funding or fan support than Murray.

The only possible school is Grand Canyon

You know they already vetted them. How do you know this? You know someone in the athletic dept. at GCU? Kind of looks like it might happen? What are you basing this statement on? I agree it would be a horrible move on GCU's part but no one on this board really knows what's GCU and the Horizon are doing, especially a Bakersfield fan that 03-puke most of the time on this board. More than likely logic would say it would be a Slummit school but I have no idea and I'm not going to pretend I do know anything GCU is doing aside from making millions on online students.

So, why the wait in all this, the drama...whoever the school is?

Wouldnt THL have already felt pretty sure of a move if this was leeked?

If it's GCU, as it looks like. Then don't be surprised should NMSU follow them in another year.

I also think it means there is some traction of UC San Diego teaming with CSU Bakersfield to get in the Big West together. The money and powers behind GCU would not be moving them if they thought that was headed nowhere.

What must the folks at Cal Baptist be thinking now?
