I'm glad you can predict the future. Got any plans for Vegas soon? I'm kidding but no one believed Bron was going back to Cleveland after his fallout with fans and the owner either. If he goes elsewhere after this season then it won't be a big surprise but it won't be a surprise to me either if he stays. He's from there (Northeast Ohio) and it has a special place in his heart.

No problem. I also agree with everything you stated. But if LBJ wanted to attract better talent to play with in CLE then the stability demonstrated by him signing a 3-4 year deal would help.

While his one year deals certainly give him leverage over Dan Gilbert, it doesn't help other players fear of being stuck on the Cavs without him there.

If James stays in Cleveland then IMO he is resigned to not winning any more rings

I do understand that perspective van. Here's my take. LeBron is still considered the best player in the world and he has options after next year and he WON'T be boxed in or constrained by anyone. He wasn't when he left Cleveland the first time, he wasn't when he left Miami and he won't moving forward after this year. Other players know this as well. IMHO that's what he's earned in that role as King. He is the primary face of the NBA right now and he has power and influence. Some folks don't like that but it's fact.

I don't look at him not signing a long term deal now because he is holding Cleveland hostage or is intent on leaving. Part of it was him wanting to know if the front office could recover after GM Griffin was let go and show that they were going to do everything possible to stay competitive and sign players. They did just that. I would argue they will be a better team without Kyrie because the ball will be spread around more to score and they are a deeper team now. They have a second line of players that they didn't have last year. No doubt the Cavs are favored in the east to get back to the finals again. And before everyone pencils in Golden State as repeat customers, other teams in the west improved and it will be a tougher road for them I believe. Cleveland is still in the top of the league AS LONG AS LeBron is on the team and he knows this.

So to bring this full circle, he will survey the landscape when the season ends (probably before the season ends) to determine where can he go to compete for a championship RIGHT NOW. He isn't going to go somewhere in a team rebuild mode. There remains a good core of players under contract with Cleveland after this season (Love, Thompson, Smith, Crowder, Korver) and he is one of the best lobbyists for other players to join him. Not sure what players may be available via trade or free agency after the upcoming season but Cleveland has options to remain a top tier team as well, and in particular, with the potential lottery pick they received in the trade with Boston. Heck, they could make a trade DURING the season. Bron has a good thing going in Cleveland right now so that will be the test for him as he looks around at other teams IMHO. All I'm saying is folks should not be so quick to pencil in that he's leaving Cleveland when the season ends.

We'll obviously have to see what happens after this season. IMO the Cavs just don't have anyone that can fraud KD. That is the basis for my opinion. Maybe there is an in season trade to can solve that problem.

There isn't a worthwhile trade the Cavs can make now or during the season unless they are willing to include that Brooklyn #1 in the trade, and who is possibly available who would really be worth that #1? LaMarcus Aldridge? You'd have to live with his aggravating inconsistency on offense. Boogie Cousins? He could blow up the team chemistry and he won't play good D on Durant.

Yeah.... that was nasty.... almost like that college kid from a few years ago with the blown out leg.

Watched the game on TV and I swear you could hear his leg break when he hit the floor. It happened so fast but the announcer said "he's broken his leg, he's broken his leg." Then the camera showed him sitting up and I just gasped like everyone else. It was a class move by LeBron and a few other players that went over to him before he was carted off the floor.

Feel horrible for the guy. Prayers for a full recovery and return to basketball next year.

That is kind of cool about the court. But I could believe Kyrie's concerns about the paint curing.

The retro paint job was a nice touch, and nobody got hurt, so it's all good. The reason the floor probably felt different to Kyrie isn't the paint job. It's that the Bucks got an old basketball hardwood and had it painted and installed in the arena just for tonight's game, rather than painting over the floor that UW-Milwaukee uses in the arena.

WHAT THE F*?

Only player on the team that is a consistent all star game prospect and arguably your best all around player.... And who or what what would you get in return?

They know there isn’t a value trade available. All they want are some expiring contract so they can be profitable.

I'll say that some of the guys they paid have not played like what earned them the contracts they had but...

Congratulations, Clippers.

This is the first time I've ever been able to say that a guy who makes $35 million a year got totally screwed.

IMO the Clippers also screwed every other team in the NBA today, in that no top-tier free agent will ever again sign a deal that doesn't have a no-trade clause.

I think I would have been less shocked had it happened over last off season, but during this season? Sounds like they are blowing the whole thing up.

Griffin was a free agent after last season and the Clippers just signed him to a new 5 year deal over the summer.

Maybe the Clips decided that without CP3, a team built around Griffin and Gallinari is never going to be a title contender, probably not even top-4 in the West -- but any of us could have told them that before they signed Griffin to his free agent deal over the summer.

I get the deal from Detroit's point of view. They're overpaying for Griffin (in terms of his salary, not what they traded for him) but they're getting the kind of player they couldn't sign in free agency, and if all goes well they'll at least be a consistent playoff team.

This was all Doc Rivers' doing from the time he was still GM. The moment when he convinced DeAndre Jordan to re-sign was the beginning of the end. That said, how did Ballmer sign off on this deal? At least Griffin would keep the arena filled. This move just put the Clips back into doormat status. $2B up in smoke.

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread:
Cavaliers have been busy on trade deadline day...

Isaiah Thomas, Channing Frye, and Cleveland's 1st round pick (not the Brooklyn pick) go to the Lakers, and the Lakers send Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance to Cleveland. The key for the Lakers is that IT and Frye both have contracts that expire after this season. An interesting twist is that Cleveland helps its own playoff run for this year while at the same time making it easier for the Lakers to make a run at LeBron in the summer.

Cleveland also gets George Hill and Rodney Hood in a 3-team deal with Utah and Sacramento. The Jazz end up with Jae Crowder and Derek Rose, the Kings take Ivan Shumpert and Joe Johnson (which makes no sense to me unless Sacto is getting cap relief out of this).

And, the Cavs send D-Wade back to Miami so he can retire as a member of the Heat. Cleveland gets a 2nd round pick from Miami but is immediately sending that pick to Sacramento as part of the deal mentioned above.

Yeah, this is interesting and begs all kinds of questions. We've been hearing pretty steadily over the last week or so that Lakers have essentially given up on the 2018 FA market and are now thinking about the 2019 market b/c, among other things, LeBron isn't interested. But this sure feels like a 2018 salary cap move. Would've liked to see the Brooklyn pick come as well but I guess IT wasn't quite THAT bad...

And it could be an indication that Cavs are beginning to plan for life after LeBron (again).

For IT, though? I don't think his next contract is gonna warrant that Brinks truck he likes to talk about.

Yeah, IT is going to hit the free-agent market and has the rest of this season to show teams that he's worth a long-term deal. His game is too close to what the Lakers have with Lonzo Ball; IT is basically Lonzo with more experience scoring in the NBA but worse defense. You'd only keep IT if you were going to send Lonzo some place else -- maybe Lithuania? 05-stirthepot

The Cavs had to get rid of IT, if for no other reason than to ease locker room tension. He needs the freedom to showcase his talents in order to secure that big free agent contract. That POV was completely opposed to the LeBron wanted to do. I have no idea where Thomas got off on questioning Love's health.

George Hill is a good pickup but none of thess additional actually help the Cavs this season. And how is Iso Joe is still in the league?

A nice move, but all I see is Gilbert setting the table for life w/o LeBron.

03-wink

Talk radio guys here are going nuts for this trade, thinking the Lakers hit a home run and are now front and center for LeBron and Paul George this offseason.

OK, I'm just not sure it's THOSE free agents (although George is probably a reasonable bet).
