Melo to OKC for reasons. Thunder fans will be deluded into thinking they will actually be competitive come playoff time.

Thunder now add a second ball hog to fight with Westbrook. Will Paul George ever touch the ball?

Melo is an older player who doesn't fill a key role that OKC didn't already have filled (i.e., it's not like when Boston acquired Garnett or Miami acquired Shaq). His $26 million salary this year and $28 million next forces OKC to pay luxury tax. Also, though Melo waived his no-trade clause for this trade, he didn't agree to drop it entirely, meaning that OKC is stuck with him and his salary burden for two seasons unless he consents to a trade or opts out of the second year. And given that the second year salary is about $28 million and Melo will be 34 when that season starts, he will almost certainly opt-in to the second year.

They better let George play a large enough role to keep him happy, or else they'll have no chance of getting him to stay in OKC after this season.

OKC is where George ended up simply because of Pacer spitefulness. He's only there for a season

D Wade is on his last legs and to reunite with LeBron when age and more versatile offense is what they couldn't overcome against the Warriors....

I could see using Wade to give a starter a rest, or more against teams without quick guards. To defend against a quick guard who might either drive through the lane or pull up for an open 3... maybe not the best idea.

None of which helps the Cavs in the finals. IT3 and Wade can't defend any better than Deron Williams last year

Wade signed for the league's veteran minimum $2.3 million. He's not a spring chicken anymore but he's not a high risk investment for one year. Not a bad thing to give the Cavs some depth and breathing room until IT comes back from his hip recovery. LeBron makes everybody around him play better and Wade and Bron have good chemisty together. What happens in the finals? Who knows? Long way to go before we get there.

LeBron knows. Which is why he isn't resigning with the Cavs

RE: 2017-18 NBA thread: off season
The NBA passed a (mild) change to its draft lottery rules that (mildly) discourages teams from tanking to improve their draft position.

It's small potatoes, but the interesting thing was the one team that voted against even this mild anti-tanking change: Oklahoma City, who has both Westbrook and George who are free agents after this season. It's as if OKC is saying, "If those guys leave, we are going to tank for a few years and we don't want the rules changed to make tanking less attractive."

EDIT: Never mind, OKC announced today that Westbrook has agreed to re-sign. http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/20862...-extension

2nd EDIT: The Internet loves that Westbrook signed his $205 million deal on Kevin Durant's birthday.

I'm glad you can predict the future. Got any plans for Vegas soon? I'm kidding but no one believed Bron was going back to Cleveland after his fallout with fans and the owner either. If he goes elsewhere after this season then it won't be a big surprise but it won't be a surprise to me either if he stays. He's from there (Northeast Ohio) and it has a special place in his heart.

No problem. I also agree with everything you stated. But if LBJ wanted to attract better talent to play with in CLE then the stability demonstrated by him signing a 3-4 year deal would help.

While his one year deals certainly give him leverage over Dan Gilbert, it doesn't help other players fear of being stuck on the Cavs without him there.

If James stays in Cleveland then IMO he is resigned to not winning any more rings

I do understand that perspective van. Here's my take. LeBron is still considered the best player in the world and he has options after next year and he WON'T be boxed in or constrained by anyone. He wasn't when he left Cleveland the first time, he wasn't when he left Miami and he won't moving forward after this year. Other players know this as well. IMHO that's what he's earned in that role as King. He is the primary face of the NBA right now and he has power and influence. Some folks don't like that but it's fact.

I don't look at him not signing a long term deal now because he is holding Cleveland hostage or is intent on leaving. Part of it was him wanting to know if the front office could recover after GM Griffin was let go and show that they were going to do everything possible to stay competitive and sign players. They did just that. I would argue they will be a better team without Kyrie because the ball will be spread around more to score and they are a deeper team now. They have a second line of players that they didn't have last year. No doubt the Cavs are favored in the east to get back to the finals again. And before everyone pencils in Golden State as repeat customers, other teams in the west improved and it will be a tougher road for them I believe. Cleveland is still in the top of the league AS LONG AS LeBron is on the team and he knows this.

So to bring this full circle, he will survey the landscape when the season ends (probably before the season ends) to determine where can he go to compete for a championship RIGHT NOW. He isn't going to go somewhere in a team rebuild mode. There remains a good core of players under contract with Cleveland after this season (Love, Thompson, Smith, Crowder, Korver) and he is one of the best lobbyists for other players to join him. Not sure what players may be available via trade or free agency after the upcoming season but Cleveland has options to remain a top tier team as well, and in particular, with the potential lottery pick they received in the trade with Boston. Heck, they could make a trade DURING the season. Bron has a good thing going in Cleveland right now so that will be the test for him as he looks around at other teams IMHO. All I'm saying is folks should not be so quick to pencil in that he's leaving Cleveland when the season ends.

We'll obviously have to see what happens after this season. IMO the Cavs just don't have anyone that can fraud KD. That is the basis for my opinion. Maybe there is an in season trade to can solve that problem.

Quote:Kerr says Curry more impactful than Jordan: 'He puts the fear of God into defenses'

On Thursday, Kerr gushed about his two-time MVP point guard Stephen Curry and the impact that he has on defenses desperately trying to guard him. He even went as far as to say Curry could be the most impactful player in NBA history.

"He is the most impactful offensive player in terms of what he does to the defense -- maybe ever," Kerr said. "There are guys, obviously, Michael Jordan impacted things. But the way Steph plays, [he] puts the fear of God into defenses like nobody I've ever seen.

"Nobody's been able to shoot off the dribble from 35 feet in a normal setting. But he does that, which changes an entire game. So everything we do revolves around Steph. You can talk about where he stands in terms of the best players in the league. He's obviously one of the best. By that standard, he's the best.

"If you want to just say who effects the game the most offensively, Steph's the best player in the NBA. But there's different ways of measuring that stuff. From a two-way standpoint, if you like the two-way guys, maybe it's Kawhi Leonard or KD [Kevin Durant] or LeBron because they're bigger and stronger and they can protect the rim, or whatever.

"… All you have to do is just look on the impact [Curry] makes every time he's on the floor for us to know that everything we do, everything we run offensively, the other guys' ability to make plays, Shaun [Livingston], Andre [Iguodala], Draymond [Green], it all starts with Steph's gravity."

Kerr has never hidden his affection for Curry and the way he plays, but this might be the biggest praise that we've seen so far. A lot of people will probably scoff at the idea of Curry being more impactful than Jordan, but remember Kerr played with M.J. for three of his prime seasons, and the 3-pointer has become the primary weapon in NBA offenses over the last decade.

Kerr also said that he believes this will be Curry's best season yet, a scary prospect for opposing teams.

Curry > Jordan
