Erik Stevenson commits to Shockers
Wichita State’s winning ways lure recruit Erik Stevenson from Washington
Quote:In May, Erik Stevenson talked about how well he bonded with Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall during recruiting visits and talks.

“Me and him are a lot alike,” Stevenson said. “We’re mentally tough. We don’t back down.”

On Monday, Stevenson called Marshall from Los Angeles International Airport to tell him he wanted to spend his college career with the Shockers. He gave Marshall a non-binding commitment after a weekend visit confirmed his desire to play for the coach who put a shooting guard in the NBA in 2016-17 with the New York Knicks.

“They have big plans for me,” Stevenson said. “I couldn’t resist it. He referred to me as the next Ron Baker and everybody knows where he’s at.”

Stevenson, a 6-foot-4 senior guard at Timberline High in Lacey, Wash., announced the decision on Twitter on Tuesday after attending a camp at Utah. He is a member of the class of 2018 and plans to sign a letter of intent in November.

I've been hoping we'd get this kid. Everything I've seen and heard tells me he's the type of hard nosed player that will thrive with 3G.

And you have to like the end of the article where it says Stevenson and Brown, who both visited this past weekend, have talked about recruiting others to join them, like Tyler Harris from Memphis... Can't hurt.

Really liked this kid from the beginning of our recruitment of him. And if he does happen to grow another 3 or 4 inches as he speculated in an early article that would be just fine. Now if we can get Koop, Chaney, Harris, and Thamba, we'll just about be set!

The Olympian - Timberline basketball standout Erik Stevenson commits to Wichita State
Quote:Erik Stevenson couldn’t wait until he got home.

He visited Wichita State University — his first-ever trip to Kansas — last week. During his visit, the Timberline High School junior was captivated by the family atmosphere and winning culture at Wichita State.

Stevenson, a three-star prospect from Lacey, was sold when he walked into the locker room and saw “Final Four” written on the floor.

“The Final Four — that’s every athlete’s biggest dream, playing on that stage,” Stevenson said. “Right there, I was like, ‘I like this place.’”

But Stevenson, who has had an offer from Wichita State since August, didn’t verbally commit on the spot because from Kansas he headed straight to Utah for a basketball camp.

He figured he’d call Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall to make it official when he got home. But Stevenson, who had offers from several Division I programs, said he couldn’t wait that long.

“I didn’t want to wait until I got home,” he said.

This one has a few more quotes from Erik and his coaches.

It's been a great two days for Gregg and staff. Rodgerick and Erik are tough kids that love to compete. Our future is in good hands.

I like that Yale was looking at him. Great basketball teams are always filled with great minds.

Looks like our recruiting area now includes Washington, Memphis, New Jersey, Houston, Florida ... etc etc. Maybe WSU is more of a destination that people what to give us credit for.

5 years we've been in everybody's face now. Ballers today looking at D1 offers have been watching Wichita State on ESPN for their entire high school careers.

I'm excited to see what Marshall and Co. do with the new conference when it comes to recruiting. We've now finished up '17 with Brown, started '18 with Stevenson and already started on '19 with Gordon. This could be a very exciting summer

I realized today that I'd forgotten about Chandler prepping a year at SCA.

Adding Harris to this class would be huge. Then add another big or two, one probably a JUCO, and we should be in good shape.
