Update for T-mobile customers. In addition to their YouTube TV partnership, they now partner with Philo (no sports/news channels) and you get $10 off the base price.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
Just FYI for Roku users of YoutubeTV.

Dear Roku Customer,

We are sending this email to update you on the possibility that Google may take away your access to the YouTube TV channel on Roku. Recent negotiations with Google to carry YouTube TV have broken down because Roku cannot accept Google’s unfair terms as we believe they could harm our users.

Ensuring a great streaming experience at an exceptional value is the core of our business. We will always stand up for our users, which is why we cannot accept Google's unfair and anticompetitive requirements to manipulate your search results, impact the usage of your data and ultimately cost you more.

While we are deeply disappointed in Google’s decision to use their monopoly power to try and force terms that will directly harm streamers, we remain committed to reaching an agreement with Google that preserves your access to YouTube TV, protects your data and ensures a level playing field for companies to compete. We encourage you to contact Google and urge them to reach an agreement to continue offering YouTube TV on Roku and to follow standard industry practices pledging not to require access to sensitive search data or to manipulate your search results.

Thank you,

Roku

Help might be on the way for fans of teams on "Bally" (f/k/a Fox) RSNs, and fans of teams on Comcast/NBC RSNs might soon have to pay extra to keep watching their teams.

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2021/05...-consumer/

Quote:Sinclair Broadcast Group CEO Chris Ripley said in an earnings call this week that the company is planning to distribute its RSNs — the former Fox-branded networks now known as Bally Sports — direct-to-consumer during the first half of next year. The Sinclair RSNs are currently in 35 million unduplicated homes, which Ripley said represent “less than half of the total subscribers possible” in the RSNs respective territories.

The direct-to-consumer option would exist alongside — rather than replace — the traditional cable bundle.
Quote:Meanwhile, NBCUniversal developed plans this year to distribute its NBC Sports Philadelphia RSN through Peacock, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Peacock option, which would only have been available to subscribers in the Philadelphia market, would have existed alongside the traditional bundle.

The plan fell through because NBCU executives believed it would have driven up the cost of Peacock in the Philadelphia market. Per the Journal, NBCU is now deciding between the Peacock option and selling the RSNs entirely.

Philo increases rate to $25/month. Existing customers will be locked in at the current $20 rate as long as they are a subscriber.
New rate will include DVR holding shows for a year instead of 30 days. Not sure if the channel lineup will be changing. Existing customers can upgrade.
If sign up before June 8th you will be locked in at the $20 rate and 30 day DVR.

At this point the commercial free bundle of Hulu/Disney/ESPN for $19.99 is worth it. Lock that price in for a full year.

Paramount+ is free with a subscription to 247sports.com, not included with a promotional price in effect. About $10/month.

ESPN+ essentially replaces NHL's version of the NFL Sunday Ticket. That is a ton of content, it had to increase. Almost surprised its only a buck, maybe more is coming.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
Does anyone in the thread talk about picture quality? I have a 77 inch LG OLED tv and I got tired of the directv price so I disconnected knowing they would call me back and I could lock in for a lower price for a year and get the NFL Sunday Ticket at no charge. Yes, I know year 2 will be more.

I signed with FUBO. They had decent channels but the picture quality was not near as good as Directv. I couldn't get back to Directv soon enough. For anyone that buys a decent tv to try and save a few bucks on the monthly channel subscription cost seems silly. For those that get a cheaper tv I can see that.

Is the picture quality better on the other streaming services?

The other advantage Directv had is they do have more 4k content. Some of the streaming like FUBO mentions they have 4K but the content is very limited.

YouTube TV is known for sound picture quality

Sling not so much

Fubo I thought would be solid in that area too

I found FUBO really lacking. I'm surprised Directv and DISH don't advertise more about picture quality. Its a way to combat price.
