RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
I called Layer3 before asking about their service. They say they consider themselves a competitor for premium service primarily.

If you look on their website they have big discounts for things like DVR, something you really don't need with everything on demand anyways.

https://www.t-mobile.com/tv

The content delivery system is supposed to be first rate. I put some value into how the content is delivered up to a certain point. I don't want to hunt through 600 apps to find what I need or choose between different streams for picture.

The high end delivery features I don't see them worth the dollar value, technology that will become standard in a few years. The replace your TV providers cable box with another cable box that sucks 9-10 dollars of electricity a month, another thing to consider.

The intent with the TV service is to eventually bundle it with phone and home service through a 5G wifi repeater type device. Verizon home 5G is 70 dollars but 50 dollars if you bundle with cell service.

Bundled cost estimated for the major carriers

Home TV (70)
Home Internet (50)
Cell Phone (40)

It will be cheaper because with a bundle you could be paying 160 instead of 220 for all of that but its not going to be cheap.

Philo is dropping the $16 package and only new subscribers will only have the $20 option starting May 6.

Existing subscribers who have the $16 package will be able to keep the package or those who sign up before May 6th.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
So I signed up for DirecTV Now at its launch when it was $45 for all the channels plus HBO and Cinemax. Due to price increases it is now $64 for the same 2 simultaneous stream service. I was wondering if anyone would be interetsed in splitting the cost with me for $32/month.

Each party would have 1 dedicated stream for them/their family for unlimited use. If 2 people are interested i can add a third stream for $5 and the cost would be $23/person/month.

I dont wanna cancel because this is a grandfathered package that gets pretty much every channel you would want but the cost has crept up.

Anyone interested in splitting the cost? PM me if so

Seems like some of these sites are now offering free access to compete with Pluto and Xumo. Both those free sites with ads, also have on demand stuff like the expensive ones. Youtube now have Youtube Free Movies just to compete with Xumo, Vudu, Pluto, PopcornFlix, Frightflix and TubiTV. Vudu is owned by Walmart and they added sporting events on demand.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
I think price increases of these OTT service from $40 to around $60 dollars per month are alienating customers.

The problem with OTT is once a customer cuts the cord its a philosophy shift toward streaming services in general. Eventually they find the product they want for free.

Its a race to the bottom and unless the OTT is offering exceptional product for an exceptional price they are cooked.

I pay $25 dollars for an 1100 channel TV package that includes all the premium channels. Its not as cheap as Philo but its not as expensive as Fubo either. Yet the level of channels it has blows away what Fubo is offering, even in sports where Fubo is strong.

Honestly that sounds like a pirated service

Sling is offer a great deal if you pay for 3 months advance.
Get an antenna for free and the Air TV player for $70.

It looks interesting but I need to know more about it as if I understand correctly, the OTA channels integrate into the Sling app and can use the existing Roku devices to get the OTA channels.

Sling is excellent if you live alone; sharing can be a problem though.

ABC, CBS, CW, NBC, Fox and PBS are supposed to be free tv that you get with tv antennas and rabbit ears. That is for locals. But, now local channels demand money from people who get them by the cable companies. Those channels are supposed to be free for local weather and natural disasters. That is why local channels sell tv ad spots.

Sling Blue gives you three streams. Sling Orange exclusives (ESPN and Disney) only have one stream. If you have access to ESPN elsewhere, Sling Blue would work great. It doesnt provide access to CBS Sports Network or Big 10 Network which is a bit tough if college sports is your priority

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
Quote:T-Mobile normally throttles data (reduces the speed) after its wireless customers consume a certain amount in a given month. But, for its home pilot, the company said it will offer around 50 megabits per second of LTE data without data caps for $50 per month. That’s not terribly fast — cable networks these days can offer up to a gigabit per second, or about 20 times the speed that T-Mobile is offering.

And those speeds won’t be fast enough if you have several TVs trying to stream Netflix in 4K HDR while someone plays video games in another room. But it’ll be fine for just surfing the internet at home and some degree of streaming.

T-Mobile says it will double its speed to more than 100 mbps by 2024 with its new 5G network.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/21/t-mobile...homes.html

For those looking to cut the cord completely T-Mobile is offering a home internet service for $50 dollars no throttling.

Top speed is only 50mbps though and will "increase" to 100mbs by 2024 once 5G comes on board.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
There is a company out there called Get Unlimited which is offering to rent a Nighthawk for 89.99.

https://www.getunlimited.net/plans

The 89.99 includes the device rental (normally 250 dollars) and unlimited, unthrottled data.

While it's not the most economical to also have to rent the device you wont have to pay the restocking fee that you normally would if you by a hotspot and dont like its performance.

If you already have an AT&T hotspot you could do a SIM only plan for 69.99.

How does it stack up to Comcast? Their mid range plan is $92 dollars everyday price and with the modem rental is about 110. The nighthawk plan pricing is comparable to a low end Comcast plan but it's a 1GB device.

If you are in an urban area with a lot AT&T circuits I can see fairly easily 100mbps.

RE: An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
The big companies as I've said before all want us to spend $300 dollars a month between our cable, internet and cell phone.

$60 dollar unlimited postpaid + $40 dollar Samsung/Apple EIP.
$200 dollar triple play cable/internet/phone with five movie channels.

If you can't afford that price point as a little sister of the poor they'll still take your money at a $210 per month for economy services.

$40 dollar 5GB prepaid + $10 dollar economy phone.
$150 dollar double play cable/internet with 60 total channels.

But its possible to do better on both the price and the content especially if you are willing to sink some money into the equipment.

$40 AT&T prepaid (16GB) with international calling+ BYOD
$35 AT&T unlimited data for internet +BYOD
$25 Logic stream TV package w/ movie channels/PPV/ESPN+

For as little as $90 a month it is possible to have top shelf content and service and save yourself thousands a year.

PS Vue is raising their package base prices by $5. Tennis, BEIN, ACC Network, and NHL network being added to their Core and higher packages. At $55/month, the PS Vue Core package is the best deal for sports fans who want the most bang for their buck

Sling Orange sports pack is going up to $10. They are also adding what they are calling a Total TV addon for $20. This includes all their addon packages plus a DVR.
