Is the Universe Conscious?
https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/uni...ncna772956
Let's do a little thought experiment here:
If I were in a high school science classroom presenting this idea to students, probably no one would have any problem with it.
Yet if I were to bring up the idea of intelligent design in a classroom then all of the sudden it becomes a huge problem and people will pitch a hissy fit.
The complaint a lot of people have with ID is that it isn't falsifiable, but is anyone going to tell me the idea of a conscious universe is any less falsifiable?
Goes back to what I have said before, the problem with ID isn't to protect the sanctity of science, the problem is that it offends the doctrine of the church of physicalism/materialism

RE: Is the Universe Conscious?
The idea that the universe is conscious and that the consciousness is somehow connected to quantum fields seems at first blush counter intuitive. Quantum mechanics is at its heart non-determinate. It is statistical. And as Heisenberg pronounced, it's underlying principle is uncertainty. Furthermore, since another basic principle of QM is that mere observation affects the state of existence.
So if the universe possessed a quantum consciousness, it would be inherently schizophrenic. It would be analogous to Travis Bickle asking "You talkin' to me?"

The real question is, is the multiverse conscious?

RE: Is the Universe Conscious?
I don't think so. I believe the Universe shows more chaos than consciousness.

this doesn't make sense. Is he saying that the number generators were no longer generating them randomly. Was it instead a clear pattern?

I'd like to see what they are using to generate the random numbers. 200 samples per second isnt anything. Also, are they measuring standard deviations?

Back in the olden days in the back of advanced math books there were pages of random numbers. I asked a mathematician how they came up with the random numbers on the pages because, i thought, a person just spouting off random numbers might bias them towards certain numbers for any number of reasons.
He told me thst the tables were created using a steel decahedron rolled the same way each time on a perfectly machined and level sheet of steel.
Even this way it is still impossible to generate truly random numbers.
I always thought it was ironic that it was impossible to be perfect enough to generate true randomness.

A guy won an assload in one of the casinos (monte carlo maybe) way back (late 1800's?) by playing roulette. He worked at a factory that made thread, in which large spindles were employed. He knew that, over time, the spindles would start to wear down on one side and become uneven, even though they should have worn down equally on both sides. He took that knowledge and applied it to the roulette wheel, saying that over time the wheel would start to favor some numbers over others. He was right. He went to the casino, and over the course of a few days was raking up hundreds of thousands of dollars. The casino was desperate to determine how he was doing it, and they investigated collusion and everything else they could think of. Finally, they realized that the man was betting the same set of 7? numbers. During the night the manager swapped out the wheels to different spindles and different balls. The guy started losing like he should, so he left, still up about $800K or so.
