Big Ten 20 game conference schedule?
Just saw this on ESPN
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketb...ence-slate

would be pretty interesting if they go to 20 games. You would think SEC would go 20 as well. Pac 12 would have some problems but think they would go 20 as well. Would leave only Big 12 and Big East as the big conferences who couldn't go 20 as they only have 10.

Big East: add UConn for #11 and go to 20 round-robin. Coming to an arena near you, in 2019-20??

generally the SEC is not stupid on issues like this so I expect them to tell the Big 10 to piss off on their opinion of how many conference games other conferences play

I would prefer the Big 12 goes to 16 conference games in BB and 7 in football

it's not happening. TV won't allow conferences to play fewer conference games, and TV has a huge say with the money they're paying.

John Calipari has stated that he is opposed to going to 20 conference games in basketball, much like Nick Saban is against going to 9 conference games in football.

right, so might not increase(though I think eventually TV will win out). But it sure as hell won't DECREASE. That's just stupid talk.

actually stupid talk is people that do not understand the concept that more conference games does not equate to more TV inventory and it can often lead to LESS TV inventory for power conferences

and the same people that are to ignorant to understand that a conference game between teams with lesser records is not as valuable as a conference game with teams that have better records

if you have 8 teams that are going to play a conference game that is FOUR GAMES because each game has TWO conference teams per game so that is FOUR games for "TV" owned by the conference

if you have 8 conference teams that are going to play 8 OOC games and 4 of those teams ply a home game and 4 of those teams play an away game....guess what that is STILL FOUR GAMES OWNED BY THE CONFERENCE

and in basketball especially where there are good teams that will take payment to come for a game without a return game if you have 8 teams in a conference and 5 play an OOC home game and 3 play an away game that is now FIVE GAMES owned by that conference and their media partners

and as the SEC SEC SEC knows well in football and as a study on the PAC 12 showed for football a win over a bad team is still better than a loss to a good team for strength of schedule

if you take it to the extreme why not have a conference just play ALL conference games then the conference can end up with an overall conference record of .500 and they can tell everyone how great they are because they played all those tough conference games

so of course someone else will go to the extreme and say that beating a bunch of football or basketball dregs does nothing as well, but that is of course where moderation and discipline comes in

as the PAC 12 study on football showed replacing one conference game with an OOC game that was equal to the WORST OOC GAME on each teams schedule the result was that for all but the two worst teams in the conference strength of schedule IMPROVED

and as the SEC SEC SEC shows year in and year out in football when they play their late season D1-AA games you move up or stay in place for a win and you NEVER get moved over by a team that had a "tough loss" be it a conference loss or a OOC loss

that does not mean the SEC SEC SEC should play 3 D1-AA games a year because of course moderation and intelligence is a factor, but in basketball where you play MORE conference games because of the home and home having the chance for your conference mates and for your team to get an OOC win without the GUARANTEED LOSS that comes with a conference win is a risk worth taking

because no matter what people think you will never get more credit for a tough loss Vs a bad win and the teams that play you will absolutely never get credit for your tough loss

so it is an absolute fact that more conference games does not result in "more TV inventory" or even in "better" TV inventory in fact is can result in LESS TV inventory and in WORSE TV inventory

and football has proven time and again that a win, even a bad win, is better than a loss and I am positive a study on basketball would show the same

You wrote all of that, without saying a single thing about the monetary value of games to TV, which is what stever was talking about.

RE: Big Ten 20 game conference schedule?
I did say something about it

there is a great deal less monetary value in a conference game between two teams with lesser win loss records

it was like I said before why not just play all conference games if the "value" to TV is a "conference game"

then you can try and sell everyone on the value of a conference with a .500 record and a conference with only one or two teams making it to the tournament every year

how in the hell do you know how good the conference is as a whole and how "valuable" the conference games are if that conference takes every possible chance to NOT play teams from outside the conference

the stupidity of the idea that conference media partners are chomping at the bit to get another one of those great Rutgers Vs Penn State or Nebraska basketball games in the schedule with Rutgers and Penn State being 15-18 and Nebraska being 12-19 is laughable

and while each of those schools playing a not very good team (at home) a really valuable TV game as well what WOULD add value overall is if each of those teams had two more wins on their schedule or even one more win on their schedule coming into conference play

because those teams are going to be playing a bunch of conference games and having that additional win or two wins on their record makes all of those conference games they play slightly better

and it is much more valuable overall Vs having those teams face off to see which one gets a guaranteed win or a guaranteed two wins Vs the one that gets one or two guaranteed losses

only a conference run by morons lets the TV partners dictate to them what they need to do for VERY SHORT TERM (probably non existent) gain while ignoring the stupidity of the long term to that decision

winning is always more valuable that losing....it is easier to get traction for your lesser programs when they can get wins.......your lesser conference teams will almost never get traction when they continue to take more and more beatings from the conference heavy weights

eventually those lesser teams will fall off even more and they just drag you down and your media partners are no longer excited about that

winning makes everyone look better...losing helps no one and makes no one more valuable

the more you trade the risk reward for playing OOC games for the safe space of one team getting a guaranteed conference win and one taking a guaranteed loss the closer you get to making your conference suck and your value to decrease

pretending that is not the case is just avoiding reality

Apparently you know better than TV execs. They want more P5 conf games, not less.

and like all execs short term thinking often leads to very poor long term results

the Big 10 should go to 22 conference games and 10 in football and they should stick it up their ass telling everyone else how many to play

if it was such a great idea their coaches would be jumping for joy at the idea and they would not need to say things like "well if everyone else is made to do it" and instead they would high five themselves for being the only ones "smart" enough to do it

then when their teams are 18-15 or 15-18 and missing the tournament year in and year out and watching live fan support and donor support fall they can come tell us how smart they were for listening to TV executives

you know TV executives like the ones that just fired hundreds of people to try and save cost because they were too stupid to know that cable TV was a changing market and they are still standing there flat footed and trying to come up with ways to raise subscription fees and cram more channels no one wants

ask the PAC 12 how well listening to a "tv executive" (or a wanna be one) worked out for them and their network

and while it has worked well for the SEC SEC SEC.....well the SEC SEC SEC got in just under the wire before it all started coming apart and you notice the SEC SEC SEC has laughed at the idea of 9 conference football games and they have laughed at the idea of giving up the late season D1-AA games and they are not looking at 20 conference basketball games either

because the SEC SEC SEC hires conference commissioners to run the conference and tells the TV people how it will be

I wouldn't mind if the Big Ten went to 10 conf games in football. It would have some advantages to 9.

No, they don't need to be forcing that on other conferences. I don't think they should do that, either.

Think it's more about inventory for the B1G network.

Calipari brings up a good point for UK. The bottom tier of the SEC is very weak so the Wildcats take an RPI hit for extra games. Also, UK can make more money bringing in better OOC opponents to Rupp.

RE: Big Ten 20 game conference schedule?
20 is inevitable for all levels.

Majors to maximize TV and digital revenue -- also home game sin Conference tend to get better attendance, and Mid Majors to get another quality home game since they cannot get majors to visit them as pre-season tournaments have replaced home and home series (or 2 for 1 even). In both cases it's a revenue enhancer.

The Big East going to 11 schools could reap the largest increase, as it's not 10% but a 22% increase in poduct

Yes, and synergy. Money stays within the conference and its institutions.

I'm not too thrilled about this. SOS tilts toward the majors, and that is huge for RPI, which is still a heavily considered metric. Yeah, yeah, I know some will say "but we get to see a return game against a rival;" that's not entirely why they're doing this.

Is it that big a deal Bish, when most of the at large go to the power (bball) confs already?

The non power confs each get their one-bid Cinderella's and fun upsets happen every year. That's what makes the first weekend the true March Madness. After that, it's down to business and determining that national champion.

RE: Big Ten 20 game conference schedule?
Heres the point your missing Todge. Those conference games aren't guaranteed to be good but they are guaranteed to be carried by the TV partner. As an example of a conference that is exclusively off ESPN. The Big East has almost every road OOC game going to ESPN. So for Fox it makes more financial sense to have them play more conference games because it would cut down on games their competitors get. And now with more conferences going to Fox you'll see ESPN want more guaranteed more games on ESPN.
