RE: Troy's Upgrades
Troy is in a great position for the next conference realignment. Thankfully they're in a terrible market, however they are on the verge of becoming one of the better G5 programs.. We need this downtown stadium to happen in a big way.

Yep, but NOTHING beats an OCS...

RE: Troy's Upgrades
you are right about that. I have no doubt we will eventually get an on campus stadium, however for conference realignment this city stadium is huge..

Two things. Can't remember, but we've probably discussed before. What if the city gave us legion field or sold it to us and used those funds for the new stadium. How much would we pay? $1 ?

Second? Every one seems to be happy with the pavilion even though most would like an IPF. Why not study a small OCS with options to expand later? We just finished a big capital campaign, so down the road when we get some more momentum, I think this should be brought up.

Hit the nail on the head.

I like the idea of building a small OCS (15K seats even). Literally anything on campus im all for.

With the $1million + annual upkeep just to keep Legion Field functioning at a bare minimum, I'm not sure buying would be a good idea.

After seeing it in person I like the current set up more than an IPF for our location

IF / WHEN the BJCC stadium is built and UAB signs on to use it, an OCS (as I understand NCAA rules on recruiting) would prohibit "official visits" to UAB games downtown. Chances are therefore, if the BJCC stadium is built, there will be no OCS, at least for decades. This NCAA rule on "official" recruiting visits was a contributing factor to AU and later UA moving games to campus.

In the past, I have proposed that IF / WHEN that BJCC stadium is built and if the B'ham Bowl game and Magic City Classic agree to use it, UAB should offer to take the whole park over for its use, demolish the LF stadium and use the land (the whole park is about equal in area to the present UAB undergrad - nonmedical - campus) as a "west campus" for expansion. More land could be bought up to decrease the distance between the two campuses - and UAB already has its own bus system. The park land is relatively flat so it could be developed much more easily / cheaply than expanding into the mountain to the south.

this is a terrible idea, quite possibly the worst idea Ive ever heard. UAB has no business buying the land that legion field sits on.

The area of the whole park that "Legion Field sits on" is a small portion of that park. If all college football games leave LF, then a good deal might be worked out with the city - much to UAB's advantage. If UAB is to follow Dr Volker's advice on dreams, such an investment in its future growth potential as a major comprehensive urban university makes sense.

If you are concerned about the area's demographics, you are probably too young to remember that the same demographics prevailed in the 60s and 70s where the UAB undergrad campus presently sits.
