Seriously. This rag-tag, QB-less NIU squad is 11-5 in Mac play the last two "oh so terrible, the wheels are falling off, Carey sucks" years. And those 5 loses? 1)13-1 WMU on road. 2) 9-4 Toledo neutral site, lost lead with 1:00 left in game. 3) double OT loss to CMU. 4) ohio by 5 after losing 3rd string QB to injury and a walk-on stepping in.5) CMU where we had 4 TOs

Losing at home to a 6th place FCS MVC Western Illinois(6-5 3-5) team???

Only 5 MAC teams ended up with a winning record. 0 Bowls wins. 2016 was a very weak year for the MAC.

Any above average team can go 5-3 in the MAC. That's what we are right now, at least until we get stud Quarterback play.

Let's at least beat CMU this year.

Not quite. For the last couple decades, CMU has never been the one loss in a season that kept NIU from going to the Championship, like Toledo has been more than once. Although there were a couple times ('11 and '14) where NIU would have been undefeated in the MAC, were it not for CMU.

Lately, they do seem to have the Huskies number.

Which declining/declined program will get more wins, NIU non-conf bball in 2017 or NIU football for 2017?

Maddie did have 3 wins, but they were against Mac bottom feeders ball(1-7), buff(1-7), BG(3-5). He lost to CMU(3-5) and WMU(8-0). I don't think we lose to ball, buff or BG with Graham or Santa. Maddie looked really good last season, but he did catch the bums section of conference play while he was in. MAC play is almost all bum section, but his was especially bummie. This year we have Kent, buff, BG, ball. Very winnable. We have CMU & EMU. Winnable. WMU is a coin flip as of now. Toledo is probably a loss even though Ryan Graham played them down to the wire last season. 5-3 Is very reasonable to expect.

Niu was a much much better team with Maddie playing last year though. I don't think anyone would argue that. Not that Maddie was a great QB but given what was behind him ... Niu probably loses by 45 at WMU with Graham

The offense ran better under Maddie as he keeps that QB run threat alive. And he extends plays. I agree Graham has a low ceiling and a limited skill set. But the dude has a black cloud hanging over him. His troubles have just been compounding. Skills don't fit the offense. Injury. team lost faith in him. I feel like the kid could use a fresh start somewhere at the FCS level and succeed.
