I do think we’ll get most of our scoring from inside again, but Johnson’s a shooter, and a couple of the 6‘7-6‘8 guys have some range (Davenport, Nickelberry), so hopefully, we won’t be as susceptible to teams packing it in like they did last year. Regardless, this team has the size to score it in the paint either way -- Thornton is a big dude.

Nice post, thanks. When I saw the title, I thought I might see something like "Five months and Tubby still hasn't...." whatever. I didn't base that on anything you've posted previously. Just figured it was likely to be something negative.

But yeah, I agree with what you said. I am liking this team more and more, and given that this staff is getting people they want--not inherited--I'm a believer in what they can do.

But yeah, I agree with what you said. I am liking this team more and more, and given that this staff is getting people they want--not inherited--I'm a believer in what they can do.

Thanks, I appreciate it -- and from others, as well. I know there are a lot of fans who are feeling better about the atmosphere now than they have in a long time -- not the talent, yet, but the general attitude of the staff and players toward each other. And I think that bodes well for the future of the program and the associated attendance at games.

It's synergy. One thing builds on another. Get the attitude right, and the actions will follow. Show people that you're having fun and playing for the name on the front of the jersey, and the fans will be there.

And I am excited when I look at the construction of the team. I don't know what we'll get out of the 5 -- we have height and size, but I don't know about the skillsets. Regardless, we have two of them, both of whom are big enough to defend the position, and that is going to make it better than last year. We won't have to play undesized at that position.

I'm not sure about Enoh. He's got a big body, but can he push people around and bang inside? He's a freshman. We shall see. But all the rest I expect to see in and out of the lineup at the 1 through 4 spots on a regular basis.

And at the position that matters most, we have the most experience. Only a handful of players (Rose, Kemp, Anderson, Jackson) have averaged four assists in the last dozen years. Joe did it in his junior and senior years. Jeremiah averaged four his sophomore year, and that was on a team that couldn't shoot.

We've got a point guard and a center and a whole bunch of interchangeable pieces in between, which means we can play defense 94 feet when we want to. And that, in my opinion, is going to make this coming season fun to watch.

Last year there was large margin between the talent on our starting unit and what we had on the bench. It is true the difference between our starters and our bench is not that large this year. But it is because our starters no longer have the same level of talent as last year.

Dedric Yes he was probably head and shoulders above anyone we have coming in.

Early Season Crawford I don't see anyone performing on that level either. Late season Crawford I can see a freshmen equalling what he did easily.

Martin should be better

Rivers should be Better

KJ was not a great player, he posted stats but that is because he was a volume shooter and no one else was grabbing boards so he should be replaceable.

That is your 5...2 guys whose production should be replaceable, 2 guys who should be better and one guy who will not be replaced. Now the bench should be markedly improved.

KJ had a big drop off in conference.

11.1 PER is hard to defend. 0.386 EFG% is pretty bad as well. Fatigue must have gotten to him. He wasn't playing like a high major player. He was decent on defense.

KJ was terrible on defense. He was a revolving door allowing any and every player to drive past him to the hoop.

I am looking forward to this year for both football and basketball.

It will be a fun ride in football. I can easily see a 9 to 10 win or better season in football as long as our QB stays healthy.

In addition I expect that we will have a better basketball team on the court than last year. In basketball, 4 out of 5 positions will be better this year. Also the loss of Dedric will be made up with better team play, defense and rebounding.

Our basketball team should win have 20+ wins given our schedule. i hope to see some unselfish team basketball and will enjoy seeing it all come together.

Go Tigers!

It seemed like as the season went on our defense got worse...Not sure if it was because teams figured out what matchups they could exploit or the team figured out they couldn't afford to have anyone get in foul trouble because they had no help or some other reason.

But most guys defense tailed off towards the end of the season...Rivers and Martin, to a lesser extent, seemed to be the ones that maintained their intensity throughout (Cleargeot also seemed to always give max effort but seemed lost at times as well)

Defense is about hard work, hustle and attitude. As the season went along it seemed like attitudes got worse and worse. I don't think that other teams figured out our defense as much as certain players just didn't want to put in the effort.

RE: Five Months
Here's my take on next season.

I expect we might be surprised at the level of talent on this team. Why? because I expect the mental aspect to be greatly improved. The cancer is gone, the disruptive attitudes have been erased. I expect this team to play together, and give great effort.

Last year, the team just plain quit. They just said F it, I'm gonna idle my jets and get out of this dumpster fire as soon as I can. How else to you explain efforts that result in 40 point defeats.

Practically anything will be an improvement.

I don't believe we will have a worse record than last year. So with the same record and a better level of play, I think it would be a successful season.

Hard to say how satisfied the unrealistic portion of the fanbase will behave with any results short of NCAA bid, but I also remember how impatient some folks were with Cal prior to the Elite Eight runs leading up to the magical 07/08 season.

I'll be happy with improved effort resulting from better team chemistry from start to finish next year with hopes of solid recruiting results to follow.

While I have no idea if Tubby will ultimately get it done, I do feel we are beginning to move in the right direction...just not sure it'll be quick enough to keep the natives smiling.

Rejoice! Tubby knows more about the team than fans and media and he thinks we will have a very good team manned by a roster better than most fans and media believe. I disagree because I think we will experience a losing season, but Tubby is the coach and he should know best.
