2. Approving proposed architectural design of 10th Ave South Streetscape Project
3. Approving demolition of 7 buildings and amendment of the Campus Master Plan
4. Approving proposed architectural design for the renovation of the Doubletree Hotel
5. Approving revised project scope/budget and proposed architectural design for the new intramural fields
6. Approving revised project scope/budget and proposed architectural design for the new classroom and faculty office building for the ROTC program

Good to see all the activity. Particularly impressive is the gift from Michael Goodrich, who has really stepped up already to help save Football and move it forward to a MUCH better place.

...Most interesting item is proposal to increase minimum high school GPA required for admission to UAB from 2.25 to 2.75.
...Students with 2.25 would be offered alternative pathway with joint enrollment with 2-year college and deferred admission to UAB.
...Students with 2.5-2.74 GPA would get offered conditional admission.
...Committee approves changing the GPA requirement for admission to UAB.
...Board approves tuition increases of 3-4 percent for three campuses beginning this fall.

The BOT is once again raising tuition (now over 50% since 2008) while increasing entrance requirements. My take on this methodology is that it is an attempt to hold down general enrollment in a way that appeals to those who already have degrees and that covers their real target. That target is to hold UA in the "small school" enrollment category while keeping out the socially undesirables - the "riff raff" of this state - unless they are great sports prospects.

Alabama's legislature once again did not increase SETF funding for Post Secondary (2 & 4 year schools) so state money is still less than it was in 2008 by a half billion dollars.

UAB got approval for all the items above. Some details:

-Demolishing the Worrell building (18th St & 10th Ave) and the building that was the temporary UAB bookstore by Bartow

-Bought the Purple Onion and old Formarggios buildings on 10th Ave S and will demolish both

-Bought the Jeffco HR building on 14th St and will either renovate or demolish

-$3M new building for the ROTC program

-Approved budget for $60M, 9 story, 780 bed dorm with a 400 seat dining hall on the bottom. It'll be at the corner of 10th Ave S and 16th St S. The Smolian House and Sorority Square that are currently on this site will be demolished

-$3.5M track and field facility. It'll include the track, field event space, seating for 300, and lighting.

I'm pretty sure they've owned the Jefferson County DHR building for a while. They were considering using it for temporary space for departments while the HUC was being replaced. This week's item was simply to get approval to demolish it. And the temporary UAB bookstore was the old Food Fair building

Upside is no permanent structure making it still viable for eventual OCS...

Just curious -- What is the rationalization behind spending $3 million in increasingly scarce funds to build a NEW ROTC building? Since UA has never been a "Land Grant college", ROTC is not a legal requirement like it is at Auburn and other Land Grant state schools. Does a number of UAB students attend UAB on military scholarships?

Yes.

UAB's ROTC program is also open to students at other Birmingham area universities like Samford, Montevallo, Miles, etc. It's not just UAB students

And if I remember correctly, UAB will possibly be working with the US military to increase numbers of nurses in active duty... also, UAB demolished the old ROTC facilities awhile back for beach volleyball facilities and parking.

how about because it is needed to serve our students and it is the right thing to do.
